  1. DEAD LAST:

DEF: McVeigh, Thompson, Simpson, Suckling, Scharenburg, McDonald (Cutler, Fuller)
MID: Pendlebury, Rockliff, Murphy, Beams, Thomas, Martin, Tyson, Beams (O’Rourke, Taylor)
    RUC: Naitanui, Sandilands (Apeness, Nankervis)
FWD: Dangerfield, Martin, Cloke, Dixon, Hogan, Fasolo (Garlett, Honeychurch)

    $78,800 in the bank.

Very strongly considering waiting on Ablett. We say it every year – start without him at your peril – but with more rookies starting at higher prices, I think they’ll reach their peak value earlier and provide an opportunity to pick Ablett up in the first half of the season. Would also be open to cashing in Daisy for him once he makes some decent cash.

If I chicken out, it’ll be Fasolo to a cheaper rookie (Kersten?) and Rockliff up to Ablett. Based on Rocky’s finish to last season, I think he could be a real match-winner and handy C or VC option.

  2. This year really is looking like the return of the mid-pricers.

At the moment, guys I tentatively have in my side priced below $500k and above Jack Martin is currently sitting at 11! One back, three mids, three rucks and four forwards. At that isn’t even counting the five guys in there who have AFL experience and are priced less than Martin.

It’ll be really interesting to see how many $500+ players people think that they can carry and still have a group of players that will take the field (and avoid the vest) each week.

At this stage, I’m looking at only six (McVeigh, Mitchell, Hanley, Ablett, Pendlebury and Dangerfield) and the only reason that there are so many in the back line is that I don’t like the look of a lot of the mid-pricers or rookies on that line. Can’t believe that I’m looking at breaking one of my cardinal rules and taking mid-pricers in the midfield!

  7. Only just started my team but H. Shaw was my first pick in the back line, if he was still a pie I wasn’t going to touch him but I think he will have a good year and won’t sook like last season. No one has mentioned him yet.

  9. One thing I’ve noticed no one is taking a chance on a Geary or a Swallow, maybe Watts, Don’t won’t to be the same, let’s be different, I’ve got them in my side and don’t think they will let me down. Only one I’m worried about is Swallow.

D/ bartel, mcveigh mitchell suckling k kolodjashnij scharenberg (mcdonald fuller)

    R/ nicnat sandi (longer nankervis)
F/ danger wingard buddy higgins fasolo kersten (taylor garlett)

Bartel might become handley for cash and the round 8 bye issue.
May think about not starting with gaz and going cotchin = $$
May punt on grundy rather than nicnat.
If I save cash on the above, higgins will be dusty martin.

  15. DEF: D. Swallow, S. Mitchell, P. Hanley, C. Delaney, J. Hombsch, T. Golds (T. Smith, J. Hunt)
    MID: S. Pendlebury, D. Thomas, D. Prestia, L. Hodge, D. Beams, C. Young, D. Tyson, D. Garlett (L. Taylor, J. Martin)
    RUC: A. Sandilands, B. Grundy (B. Longer,B.Brown)
    FWD: T. Cloke, L. Franklin, T. Bellchambers, J. Paine, M. Clark, P. Karnezis (D. Towers, V. Michie)

Hoping players like Swallow and Prestia fill the gap that Ablett leaves by being in the forward line.
Willing to take the risk on Sandilands providing i have back up with Longer, feel that Grundy going into his second year and manning up as the main ruck is too good to pass up at that price, the same with Bellchambers with his MPP. Beams picks himself.
Still a little work to do with the fringe players, but Martin,Garlett,Tyson and Paine are most likely to stay in this side.
The rest I’II watch for during the pre season re injury watch.

Will likely spend some of that to move Waters into a more reliable back, and potentially Paine into Clark if he is ready for round 1. I think a nice mix of rookies and premiums, with S.Selwood my call for a breakout year. Tackles and house down year after year.

Fwd line is very thin, not confident in starting with Rohan.
Am keen to find a spot for Dixon, whether it be in rucks or fwd line, think he will have a dynamite season this yr
S.Mitchell I wont start with, will be an upgrade target, ZBall will go nuts this yr, ave 110+, also think Bastinac will have a huge yr.

  32. Hey guys.

That’s for the feedback jurn. This is my big problem. Maybe you guys can help.

I am happy with my side except my F4 position and its flow on to M10 and D8 rookies.

Option A is Wingard. Would love to get a premo in here but to do this I only have $125k for the final mid and defender position. At moment I have morobito and Lang on but if they don’t get up i’m in strife.

Option B is Luke Parker or titch. This gives me an extra $50k on the lower rookie and some flexibility. Downside is if they don’t have a breakout year they could be dead weight in the forward line.

Option C is fully speculative in Higgins. We all know the risk associated with him. But this would let me go for docherty in defence and aish in the miss, players with higher job security you would think.

Or D, Bock or a rookie (making 5 forward rookies). Gives Docherty, aish and $150k to cover any rookie playing/not playing round 1.

    Bit of advice guys?

  35. Ok, my team V2..

Still have planty of coin in the bank ($644,600) for changes that are inevitable after pre season starts and before round 1 bounce.. I have tried to find the best value of set and forget players and rookies. Mid field is very mid priced on paper, but all have huge potential for massive scores.

    Fwds..

    Darling, Lamb, Kersten
    (Taylor, Gartlett)

All 4 rucks are still very much in the air. Still want to find a spot for Charlie Dixon. Am secretly hoping Daisy isnt fit for rnd 1 so he can make room for either Cotchin, Ziebell, Cunnington or Bastinac. Darling comes into my side on the word that he will play a major midfield roll this yr. M3 & M4 spots will ultimately be between Buddy, Parker, Mitchell, Dixon & Darling.

    RUC: Naitanui, Macintosh (Apeness, Nankervis)
FWD: Dangerfield, Martin, Dixon, Franklin, Lennon, Kersten (Garlett, Honeychurch)

    $18,500 remaining

Heavy in the backline, but mostly because I can’t see any better place for the extra $40k by swapping one of the back premos for Scott Thompson. The only changes I’m considering at the moment are:

    Walker -> Thompson
    H-mac -> Sandilands
    Murphy -> Cotchin or Liberatore

Could also swap an expensive rookie (Lennon/Michie) out for a cheaper alternative, then turn Murphy into a Griffen, Rockliff or Selwood.

Any thoughts at the moment guys?

BACK: Jarrad McVeigh, Sam Mitchell, Shannon Hurn, Matt Suckling, Luke McDonald, Matthew Fuller (Jed Bews, Tom Cutler)

MID: Scott Pendlebury, Jobe Watson, Marc Murphy, Dayne Beams, Dale Thomas, Jack Martin, Claye Beams, Dom Sheed (Anthony Morabito, Jon O’Rourke)

RUCK: Todd Goldstein, Aaron Sandilands (Tom Derickx, Daniel Currie)

FWD: Patrick Dangerfield, Travis Cloke, Luke Parker, Steven Motlop, Jack Darling, Alex Fasolo (Shane Kersten, Lewis Taylor)

Let me know what you think. I tad heavy on the forwards but forward rookies are the worst performing for me historically.

  39. Simple question. With the loss of Mumford and Jessie White, and ongoing questions over LRT and Goodsey making them unlikely to see ruck time, what are the odds of Derickx getting a run as that forward/ruck style, or even as #2 ruck, or Nankervis?

Would sydney be more likely to risk Tippett in that ruck/forward role now they have Buddy?

I am looking at the McIntosh/Sandi big bet. Dangerous with 7 games between them last year I know. But potential reward is high, and I will have Dixon in forwards as cover.
And is Majak Daw likely to be #2 over Currie? I expect so.

Searching for best R3 option so I can roll the dice.

  41. $334k remains.

I think with price adjustments for the top rookies and a weaker draft there is a greater emphasis on recycled players than rookies.

Interchange restrictions will also start to favour those with a longer development time like o’rourke.

I am tossing up rich for smurf, and am quite uncomfortable with the ben reid/tom curran combo.

Any of armstrong/schoenmakers/hine could be suckling, scharenberg or kourtney kardashian replacements. $200k is a lot for an untested rookie, especially if they are unlikely to play due to targetted recruitment OR a surplus of young talent.

Tossed up the Tippett vs Aylett bit… think that that extra year of development for $70k less may see them edge out the first years.

Shaw is a big risk but should come back to kick in duties… a cheap 80 point plus player.

Chappy is a risk but cheap for a 100 point player and hasn’t had to be recycled to a bottom team.

Sandi and McIntosh…. well I expect to burn one trade out of the two, but luey proved me wrong and they have both had a real good rest. Both easy 100 pointers if near fit. Apeness will get a go if sandi breaks.

Clark and rohan at rookie prices. Nuff said.

  42. New strats this year which are pretty obvious but are a direct result of last years late failure.
Def: Bartel, Mitchell, Simpson, Hanley, Grimes, Tape (McDonald and Fuller)
Mid: Dependlebury, Watson, Boak, Beams, Tyson, Aish, Polec, O’Rourke (Langdon and Garlett)
Ruck: Grundy, Hmac, Namkervis and Apeness
Fwd: Danger, Wingard, Dixon, Higgins, Hogan, Rohan (Taylor and Banfield)
    40k rem
Hoping for; a set and forget back line. Rookie cash in the mids. Rucks may change on fitness and form but money won’t (much). Fwds…hoping for a “revival” year 3 perms only. Burn man of the century must come good at some stage. Rohan due some luck and for some strange reason I rate Banfield and think he will go well at the tiges.

I’ve tried to pick a side that wouldn’t have many blokes playing in my oppositions teams… And have a few DPP in each position

What do you guys think of my FWD line cause I think it’s struggling?

  46. Bock for the price is very hard to resist. Grundy does have clear R1 duties at a low price and did finish the season well.

Of course, it doesn’t take much for a Collingwood fan to talk up their players, so I would be  taking it with a grain of salt.

  48. DEAD LAST:

DEF: Mitchell, Thompson, Hanley, Suckling, Kardashian, McDonald (Fuller, Cutler
MID: Ablett, Pendles, Libba, Beams, Thomas, Martin, Aish, Michie (Dunstan, Taylor)
    RUC: NicNat, Sandi (Thurlow, Nankervis)
FWD: Danger, Dusty, Buddy, Pav, Caddy, Markworth (Garlett, Kennedy-Harris)

Bugger all left, but if NicNat or Sandi are on the rocks it’ll be NicNat to Lobbe and Sandi to Grundy. Can free up cash with some rookie downgrades, or by slotting Swallow into the back line or Murphy into the mids.

Based on some educated guesswork, should be looking at around 2200-2250 per week provided nobody stinks up the place.

  49. Markworth is a potential star but yet to play a senior game and coming back from a serious knee injury may struggle to get games early with the Mighty Saints.

    R:Grundy, Sandi (Longer, Thurlow)
F: Danger, Dusty, Buddy,Dixon, Fasolo, Honeychurch (Garlett, Taylor)

$8,200 left. I cant resist Sandi at that price but hope Longer will be enough cover for him. Used a lot of trades on Rucks last year so hope this starting setup helps. Hope Mick uses Docherty of halfback in NAB,and of course all other Rookies will depend on NAB cup form and being selected in Rd.1

  51. Last year was my worst ever for rucks too.

You have the Thurlow/Dixon combo which is good cover too.

  52. It seems there are quite a few tempting discounted priced premiums and very tempting mid price options this year. My starting point is to get on board with value – ie, get guys who are only worth less than they might otherwise have been – aside from the obvious (Danger, Pendles etc). Also speculating on growth in the form of Libba, Gaff, Swallow and Caddy

D: Bartel, Mitchell, Grimes, D Swallow, Suckling, Scharenburg. (Cutler, Fuller)
M: Pendlebury, Liberatore, Murphy, Beams, Gaff, Thomas, Martin, McDonald. (O’Rouke, Taylor)
    R: Sandilands, Longer. (Currie, Thurlow)
F: Dangerfield, Martin, Dixon, Mitchell, Caddy, Kersten. (Thurlow, Garlett)

The more expensive nature of rookie this year i feel means a slight adjustment of tactic might be required. Cheers

  53. Have pretty much no idea about rookies at the moment, they are basically just price holders and names that i somewhat recognise from somewhere. obviously very likely to change through preseason

Defenders: Mitchell, Shaw, Hanley, Mckenzie, Kolodjashnij, Fuller, (Ellis, Georgiou)

Midfielders: Ablett, Pendlebury, Griffen, Watson, Beams, Thomas, Martin, Dunstan, (Morabito, O’rourke)

    Rucks: Naitanui, McIntosh, (Currie, Thurlow)

Forwards: Dangerfield, Gunston, Winderlich, Boyd, Hogan, Bock, (Taylor, Garlett)

Forwards are by far the toughest to choose. Gunston has always played great when franklin was not there/playing poorly, and winderlich is likely to be essendons no.1 forward with hurley going back and crameri at the bulldogs. who knows how many games he will play though.
Sylvia is interesting but i think ill wait to see him play a few good games before i go taking chances. learnt my lesson last year going with a whole heap of guys who looked good in preseason only to get burnt. we have enough trades and the prices dont change for long enough that you can just trade into players who perform well early rather than taking chances.

  54. Trying to wrap my head around this one:

    Roughead + Hawkins (TU)
    vs
    Pavlich + Zorko (TD)

Could also replace Zorko with Parker, Mitchell, Gunston etc. around the same price point if anyone has any suggestions.

  55. Hi all,

I’m trying not let the SC take over my life just yet (give it a week or two) but I thought I’d drop by and get some feedback on my first draft.

    What do you think guys?

Watts, Petterd, Broughton, Murphy, Maxwell, Dawson
    Bootsma, Kolodjashnij, J

Cornes, Selwood, Stanton, Carrazzo, Palmer, Shiels, Armfield, Crowley
    Hunt, Karnezis

    Graham, Ceglar
    Wood, Derickx

Franklin, Sylvia, Vickery, Lynch, Gumbleton, Dawes,
    Bradley, Higgins

Still got $40k to spend but I just can’t see any improvement.

  56. Ok, so maybe my duds and cripples approach wasn’t the best way forward. I did like Matteo’s idea of starting with that as a Tech League team. Good luck polishing that turd.

Tongue out of cheek now. Any thoughts on this one?

    Mitchell (M), Hanley (M), Swallow (M), Atley, Suckling, Kolodjashnij.K
    Cutler, Fuller

Swan, Cotchin, Murphy, Beams, Thomas, McDonald (D), Ellis.X , Dunstan
    O’Rourke, Garlett (M)

    McIntosh, Sandilands
    Currie, Thurlow (F)

    Dangerfield (M), Martin (M), Dixon (R), Franklin, Mitchell (M), Caddy (M)
    Broomhead, Honeychurch (M)

I’m taking a few punts. Gone for a lot of potential bargains in the midfield but I think Cotchin, Murphy (should get better with the tag) and Beams should all be good come seasons end to be in my midfield 8.

I’ve also got 6 players in the 300-400k range which I normally hardly even consider. But Daisy, Atley and Caddy should all be playing plenty of midfield and if they can average at least 80 will all be easy upgrades. I am missing out on most of the top end rookies so depending on NAB form and positioning I will have to think about downgrading one or both of Atley & Caddy.

Can HMac and 211 get me through at least half a year? With Dixon as back up I think it’s worth the risk.

Last problem – the jobs well and truly done with the cricket (Oi Oi Oi) and the footy can’t come quick enough.

  57. Im not sure on Clark and Scharenberg. While I had both of them in my initial team, both are suffering interrupted preseasons. As such I am seriiusly looking at losing both and keeping Scharenberg as a downgrade option for a starting defensive cashcow.

McBean also is in the interrupted preseason camp I believe so I would consider the same reasons.

If anyone has more info on any of these players feel free to share.

All dependant on round 1 of course.

Grundy/Longer looks pretty thin, therefore risky but could come with a high reward. While I believe. If both of them keep on the park, you are on a winner, for sure. No different to the Hmac/Sandi risk really, just different reasons they may not play. I think it is a reasonable risk to take and I quite like it.

I was seriously considering longer for R3…. his price makes him a possibility for that. You could actually do a reverse dpp ruck with him as #3 and dixon as #2, with thurlow in forward subs and carry another forward rookie.

Just wondering at Thurlow in last Fwd position. His dpp is wasted there, and there are rookies more likely to play if you aren’t using his dpp.

I cannot recall a season with so many potentially good ruck strategies. This could be due to so many ruck strategy failures last year, or due to the changes to interchange rules over the last couple of years. But I have about 10 rucks I consider a “buy”, so this year I expect a lot of combinations out there.

  59. So I tried again after about a month. Here’s my team, V 2.0

    $37, 600 in the kitty.

    Defenders:

McVeigh, Mitchell, Hanley, Suckling, Docherty, McDonald, Cutler, Fuller

    Midfielders:
Ablett, Pendlebury, Watson, Cotchin, Murphy, Beams, Thomas, Beams, Morabito, Crouch

    Rucks:
    Grundy. Sandilands, Apeness, Nankervis

Dangerfield, Franklin, Hogan, Fasolo, Rohan, Taylor, Garlett. Honeychurch.

  61. I like it Eagling, it’s a risk and reward team IMO.
Like you say if Sandi can get to week 5/6 he’s done his job, anything more is a bonus.

Going the risky route myself, version 2 as follows, round 8 doing my head in already and we haven’t started yet!!!

Defenders – Shaw, Hanley, Ibbotson, Birchall, Suckling, Kolodajashnij K, Mcdonald, Fuller.

Midfield – Ablett, Watson, Murphy, Beams, Thomas, Martin, Beams, Polec, Ellis, Morabito.

Rucks – McIntosh, Sandilands, Apeness, Thurlow

Forwards – Franklin, Chapman, Pavlich, Walker, Higgins, Hogan, Bock, Menzel.

$252,200 left over for the inevitable necessary changes once the teams get announced for round 1

Doubts about Birchall, so he may well get changed, Big gamble with two crocked Rucks, but Risk/Reward as they say, just need 5 weeks from them.

Obviously we don’t know the Rookie starters yet, so my back up list to choose from is

    James Toohey DEF
    Matt Crouch MID
    Gary Rohan FWD
    James AIsh MID
    Tom Boyd FWD
    Viv Michie MID
    Dom Sheed MID
    Josh Kelly MID

Hopefully i’ll get 30 starters from that lot, well 29 actually, i’ll keep one non starter for the loophole.

  62. I thought Franklin is in the restricted training group?

Not sure Rohan can make the 22. Really hoping for a bit of luck for that kid.
Also not sure where Sam Reid fits now.

Got a lot of tall forwards to squeeze in there. Goodes, Franklin, Tippett, Reid… and thats without looking for a place to rest a ruckman.

If Tippett can’t pull off the #2 ruck they may face some serious structural issues should they need to fit Nankervis or Derickx.
