Captaincy Candidates – Round 17

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 8 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

PARISH v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 96, 77, 77 (83 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 152, 134, 112 (133 av.)

Parish has been averaging 140 since he burst onto the premo MID scene in the Anzac Day game – just insane. Playing in Melbourne against a weak Crows side, so strap in for another 140.

MERRETT v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 135, 120, 17 (91 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 117, 64, 115 (99 av.)

Definitely been eclipsed by Parish and held back each week by low DE and CP ratio, but Zerrett still solid for 120+ this week for those without Parish.

LAIRD v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 97, 73, 137 (102 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 105, 124, 106 (112 av.)

Managed 129 and nearly 40 touches against one of the comp’s premier midfield groups last week and is now firmly D1/2 and even a serviceable M8. A lock for 125 and a chance to go large if the Crows compete.

Captaincy Candidates

STEELE v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 167, 74, 88 (110 av.)
  • L3 @ QLD: 149, 122, 167 (146 av.)

Have Steele just edging out Lyons in this one after last weeks’ 36 touch, 15 CP and 14 tackle performance. Venue’s unconfirmed at this stage but will be somewhere in QLD, where Steele got to cut his teeth last year. 135 at a minimum.

MACRAE v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 92, 132, 103 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 138, 145, 149 (144 av.)

Hewett back to ruining our weekends as a tagger and likely goes to Bont, freeing up Macrae. Will be able to do his thing and carve it up Marvel, lock him in for 130.

GRUNDY v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 115, 137, 117 (123 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 126, 76, 138 (113 av.)

Has just been dynamic on return and will have a field day against a raw Nankervis and a struggling Tigers on ball brigade. Not much to it, 140.

Steer Clear

MITCHELL v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 102, 150, 126 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ UTAS: 114, 76, 90 (93 av.)

“We usually look at the opposition best MIDs, we think we’ll give him another role” said Longmuir yesterday on Serong’s role. Resign yourself to a sub-ton.

Smoky Pick

DANGERFIELD v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 75, 156, 133 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 140, 106, 149 (132 av.)

Went vintage last week! Team high CBA load, 37 touches, 18 contested, 11 clearances and a goal off only 75% TOG! Going to really put non-owners to the sword with 140 this weekend.

Verdict

Zerrett/Laird into Macrae. Will give Bont a break from the C and whack it on Macrae, no problems. Agonizing over the VC though: Laird or Zerrett. Crows leak MID points and Dons home game point to Zerrett, but have a feeling about Laird. Going to the game with a friend, so think I’ll decide a minute out.

  1. Steele into Macrae if Briggs could be my loop otherwise will be Laird/Zerrett into Steele/Macrae.

  2. Thanks GD.

Considering a slew of options, Zerrett / Petracca / Oliver / Darcy / Jelly.

Seems to be getting harder and harder to choose a VC / C.

    1. Hey, Abs.

      Yeah, really tricky.

Jelly v Suns very appealing but I couldn’t squeeze him in and Racca could be due for a big one but hard to get a read on.

Really like Darcy v your Hawks, traditional tap ruckman usually have a field day against you guys.

Here are the stats for all three of them:

      JELLY v Suns

      L3 v Suns: 106, 124, 138 (123 av.)
      L3 @ MARS: N/A

      PETRACCA v Port

      L3 v Port: 99, 62, 62 (74 av.)
      L3 @ AO: 116, 160, 132 (136 av.)

      DARCY v Hawks

      L3 v Hawks: 129, 139, 64 (111 av.)
      L3 @ UTAS: N/A

      1. Thanks for the stats GD.

Agree with every writhing you wrote!

Has to be either Tracca / Clarry -> Darcy

        Or Darcy -> Jelly!

    1. Looking at him for this exact same reason too.

His past Port performances are putting me off however, 2/3 of them weren’t at AO.

    2. SATAN v Port

      L3 v Port: 105, 71, 108 (95 av.)
      L3 @ AO: 204, 137, 205 (182 av.)

Yeah, carves it up AO. Exactly right, John.

I’ve had a weird feeling about him all week, either goes 87 or 159 tonight lol.

      1. Too good GD!

Who would you go between Tracca and Clarry?

Petracca seems to love the big games where as Clarry seems to love SA for some reason!

        1. With Racca held back by DE every f*cking week, I’d probably give Satan a look if I had to choose one.

Just looked a little flat last week and his big games at AO were against the Crows, hmm

        2. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Oliver’s scores have dipped since Melbourne has suddenly found it difficult to hit the scoreboard. A lot of his hardball gets earlier in the season were leading directly to scoring chances or goals and was therefore getting the love from the SC scoring system.

If you think Melbourne get their goal scoring back on track I think Oliver will go large.

          1. Yeah, a VERY good point, Hplate.

Dees have reverted to defending ahead of attacking lately.

Think tonight will be hotly contested, surely they realize they’ll need to hit the scoreboard?

    1. For C who would you rather:
TU – Macrae v the Swans
TD – Grundy v the Tigers (Chol sole ruck & probably Pickett as back-up)

  3. Being forced to go with PODs for leagues this week as I don’t have Bont and all my matchups in my leagues do along with all my other premos.

Parish into Cunnington, hoping one of those two go large as I’m expecting Bont to put his foot down vs Swans.

    1

    1. Oh, Cunnington against the Eagles is a great idea, HP! We are leaking MID points rn and absolutely abominable in CPs and ground ball gets – Cunnington’s wheelhouse!

      CUNNINGTON v Eagles

      L3 v Eagles: 85, 142, 58 (95 av.)
      L3 @ OS: 81, 85, 91 (86 av.)

  4. Thoughts on Zorko for VC? Game 200 so I expect the boys to get around him and maybe look for him a little more, had an off game last week with 12 touches and still got his way to 99! At Metricon though, so not too sure whether that’s a positive or negative, but Saints are an easy team for midfielders to rack it up against.

    1. ZORKO v Saints

      L3 v Saints: 91, 117, 32 (80 av.)
      L3 @ MS: 140, 118, 74 (111 av.)

Yeah, that could work. Lions do really well at Metricon, playing his 200th, Dunstan goes to Neale.

As long as you’ve got a Macrae/Grundy type to fall back on, go for it.

  5. Great stuff Gunboat.

I ( obviously ) watch Serong every week, He is a instinctive clearance player, and really knows his way around stoppage play. Thats why I think he is only really effective on smaller inside mids like Mitchell, Merrett, etc..

Last week Serong went to Walsh at centre bounce. Teague was quite clever, and moved Walsh to a wing ( Dow had more CBA”s )
Walsh just ran Serong into the ground, and Longmuire gave up in the end.
Walsh was huge in the second half and probably won them the game, ( Freo’s goal kicking was the real culprit.) His last quarter was something special, unless you’re a Freo supporter 🙁

    On to Captains..

This week my only loops are from Port and Hawks. Even Durham who I’m trading in plays Friday. So I only have the first two games to work with.

Gawn , Ridley or Laird ?

I think I will go Laird as Max hasn’t put up a C worthy score for weeks.

    So Laird into..

    Steele or Grundy ?

I think both are very solid options but I’m leaning towards Grundy.
If he can go 126 V Ryder, Whats he likely to do to an underdone Nank ?

Kelly v’s GC is tempting, but I prefer to VC him.

Danger could go huge again v Carlton, I may look at my match ups and take a punt on him. mmmmmm

I don’t mind Macrae, but there’s something about Sydney, they work hard both ways and don’t usually give up huge mid scores.
I maybe wrong but its just a gut feeling.

So Laird into Grundy / Danger for me.

    Thanks again Gunboat.

I know your stapped for Cash but…

Don’t go DeGoey. Him and Heeney will do your head in !

I would prefer Mackay or even Mason Wood !

    Best of luck.

    1. Great insight on Serong. Yeah, think shutting down smaller frame MIDs is his specialty.

Yep, Laird into Grundy/Steele very solid for you.

Ugh, I know. Not crazy about De Goey either, but thinking they give him that OB role for the rest of the season? Guess I could go Daniher? Buttery run home and I could enjoy watching the Lions even more lol.

      1. I was kinda joking on De Goey.

With just the 7 rounds left this is probably as good a time as any , to take a punt on someone like De Goey. New coach should give him a decent amount of mid minutes. If he stays upright he has to average 85 plus. He may even go 95+ if he has a few big games Goal wise.

I’d still be a little nervous running him, and Heeney 😉

        1. Im now running this exact gauntlet, and your right about the nerves! Had Heeney for a while, picked up De Goey as my replacement for jezza cameron. Fingers crossed

  6. Thinking of going Touk Touk into Grundy. What are your thoughts, and what’s his stats vs GWS GD? I like my pod VC’s.

    1. Love Miller, own him, but probably wouldn’t use him this week.

Will cop attention from De Boer if he’s back or Ward.

      Here are his stats anyway:

      MILLER v Giants

      L3 v Giants: 80, 86, 81 (82 av.)
      L3 @ MARS: N/A

  7. Hey Joe T.

You’re right about De Boar but…

I’m not sure he gets a gig this week.
He would have to come in for Green. I can’t see how you drop Green on form, and the fact their playing GC.It just makes sense to keep playing Green.

I maybe wrong but I think De Boar only gets a game if a Mid needs a rest or is injured.

Cogs a chance to return soon too.

Good news for SC if I’m right.

My guess is from the bench of GWS..

Playing .. Flynn . Green . Finlayson .Idun

Sam Reid or De Boar as medi sub.

I think Touk maybe a great VC this week.

Its on Mars 😉 and looks to be wet and windy day.
Plenty of stoppages mean a heap of points for Touk.

    1. Ward still plays defensively and gets given tagging jobs, FT. That’s my main concern, idk.

Own Miller, so hope you’re right.

    2. Read my mind. And we’d be right, he’s not named! I’m leaning towards rolling the dice with him now since it appears nobody else will VC him 🙂 good luck all.

      1. Yep good call.

I think with the weather forecast they chose to go smaller
They dropped Flynn and Finlayson for Hogan and Sam Reid.

        Good luck with Touk.

  8. Yeah maybe you’re right.

I’m not sure Ward can shut down players quite like de Boar , but I can see him trying to negate Touk at stoppage.

Watching Touk last week though , he’s an absolute elite runner, whoever gets him are going to have a long day.

The wet weather must play into his hands as well.

Maybe not a VC option but still good for a 120.

    I wish I owned him 😉

  9. Is O’Connor going to tag Walsh and if so, how much will it curtail Walsh’s scoring
    Please comment

  10. Hey Murray.

It’s really hard to tell ?

As I mentioned in above comment. When Serong went to Walsh last week , Teague moved him to the wing.

Walsh outran Serong easily. If you think O’Connor can run with him, maybe he can keep him quiet. The Cats are a much stronger team than Freo as well. Depending on if the tag sticks, I expect him to finish between 90 – 120.

You would think the Blues would have to win, for him to go much bigger than that.

    Best of luck.
