Captaincy Candidates – Round 2

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 21 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 128, 98
  • L3 @ MCG: 135, 41, 82

Solid for 130 each week pretty much. The Saints’ tagging types are marginal at the moment, so expect them to play it straight and leave Daicos unencumbered.

SERONG v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 101, 117, 118
  • L3 @ MRVL: 138, 70, 103

“He’s got no ceiling” I said as I put the like priced Green and Gulden ahead of him. Last week’s 46 touches, 21 contested and 170 would say otherwise. A red hot start and North this week. Will replicate Green’s performance of 150.

GAWN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 91, 94, 172
  • L3 @ MCG: 162, 91, 84

Been double teamed the last few times against the Hawks but they are now running just Reeves and were sharply exposed in marking contests I50 last week. Maxxy to keep raging for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

GULDEN v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 152, 57, 130
  • L3 @ SCG: 77, 138, 90

Ooof. This starting pick is becoming harder and harder to justify. Not to worry. Should carve Essendon on the outside this week, where they’re vulnerable. Bounces back with a 140 at home – I hope.

BONTEMPELLI v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 124, 130, 133
  • L3 @ MARS: 101, 112, 130

Suns a very dense, undesirable midfield opponent but Bont is kind of immune to all that and the Dogs really need to steady the ship. A lock to lead the way with 125. Also don’t mind Tingles here after Witts was well covered in the HOs by ROB last week. He’ll also whip him ATG.

GREEN v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 106, 102, 123
  • L3 @ OS: 106, 92

Eagles showed some resolve against Port despite the scoreboard and their MIDs didn’t really fly off the handle in SC terms. I also don’t love an away fixture for him here. Maybe not all roses. However – Green has had an immense start to the season and the Giants will roll on. 130.

Steer Clear

No express Steer Clear this week, all pretty solid options. In these early stages go for a high ceiling VC and a rock solid C. With teams so similar, it’s VC/Cs that set the rankings.

Smoky Pick

BUTTERS v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 158, 104, 87
  • L3 @ MCG: 109, 104, 67

Similar backdoor deal to Green: playing an opponent who should be very leaky but are sort of fighting, unfortunately away but will still get it done with 120+.

DAWSON v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 122, 104, 85
  • L3 @ AO: 118, 89, 119

Don’t mind Dawson either, as a little speculative option. Cats pretty bare bones on ball and Crows total flat track bullies. Dawson to lead for 125 and get the Crows their first win.

History

Round 1: Green 152

Verdict

All solid options this week and with it a B18 round you’ll be able to take any combination you like. For me, that’ll be Gulden into Green. The popularity of both early first drop VCs and Daicos himself might see me bandwagon however.

  1. Love your work GD.
Always nice to hear your insight especially since it’s you vs me in Guns regulars #2 this week!! Daicos into Green for me but will take a 125+ from the son of a gun to be safe. Good luck this week.

  2. Wanting to go Gawn into Green but Daicos VC seems to be the safe pick.

Goldy took over last week against Reeeves so expect Gawn to have a big one (again).

  3. I am going Gawn into Green.

I wouldn’t be surprised if FURL throws a curve ball and somehow tags Daicos.

Big Maxy is untaggable and expect him to go very large against Reeves.

Green is pretty safe for 125 . My only concern is if GWS are so far ahead that he has his minutes managed in the second half.

    1. Hogan will find life more difficult against Barass & McGovern rather than Pink & Dawson.
Not a captains pick I would be brave enough to make.

    1. Yes
Especially with Jarrod Witts now been withdrawn with a groin injury and replaced in the squad by Ned Moyle.

      1. Yeah. Obvious appeal with Witts gone. Good option.

Worried a touch about Suns midfield sharking his HOs but will have nice economy ATG.

        120+ won’t be an issue.

Still have Green ahead of him though.
