Captaincy Candidates – Round 22

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 9 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

GULDEN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 109, 156, 72
  • L3 @ SCG: 99, 142, 95

The Swans simply have to respond, the Pies leaked 30+ to all three Blues on ballers last week and Gulden’s probably been the only Swan recently who you could hang your hat on. He gets there for 125. Heeney also on the cards to bounce back.

XERRI v Eagles:

  • L3 v Eagles: 131, 88, 35
  • L3 @ BA: 151, 119, 103

Making my skin crawl how hard Xerri is going to bake. To think I traded him for Sweet smh. Eagles been the best ruck match up all year. Witts 53 HOs and 161 last week. Xerri 150+

SHEEZEL v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 129, 114, 114
  • L3 @ BA: 160, 119, 108

Requires no explanation: Sheezel, Eagles, Tassie, 140. LDU also great.

SERONG v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 110, 135, 79
  • L3 @ OS: 111, 140, 84

Serong definitely simmered down but this remains an ostensibly good match up in what should be an amazing game. Solid for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

ZERRETT v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 97, 114, 136
  • L3 @ MRVL: 106, 108, 135

Really hated Zerrett’s game last week with just 3 contested off of 29. Very reminiscent of how he used to play before he elevated himself to a contested, leading MID. Chalk it up as an anomaly against the stacked Dockers. Gets back to business against the Suns as the Dons try to sneak into 8th. 130.

GAWN v Port

  • L3 v Port: 177, 74, 160
  • L3 @ MCG: 97, 100, 114

I’m personally not the biggest backer of Maxxy (even as an owner) just because the Dees are finished and he’s had to put them on his back all year but, yes, he does go off v Port. Think the MIDs shark the hell out of him but the direct ruck match up itself will be enough for a 120.

BUTTERS v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 98, 184, 57
  • L3 @ MCG: 127, 175, 109

No ANB to Bont last week and just disgraceful on ball, so Butters will carve up the Dees for 140+ in all honesty. Rozee and Houston good shouts too.

BONTEMPELLI v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 112, 88, 87
  • L3 @ AO: 106, 141, 145

Reportedly left training with a minor ankle issue yesterday but the club were then emphatic it was routine and he’s all good. The Crows at home are tricky, so don’t think the Dogs rest on their laurels. Bont at the helm for 125.

Steer Clear

DAICOS v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 135, 81, 62
  • L3 @ SCG: 62

Tricky one. Could see the Swans going back to their roots and tagging but on the other hand Jordon been playing half-forward and wing instead of tagging recently in order to accommodate Mills and Parker at stoppage. It’ll also be such a high stakes, cut-throat game that Daicos could just get it done. A high variance at either low-ton or 140 depending on tag. Given he’s first drop, you can take the flyer if you’re feeling it – would otherwise be a pass.

NEALE v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 71, 76, 164
  • L3 @ G: 78, 179, 114

Just has to get Bedford, doesn’t he? Low-ton.

Smoky Pick

SINCLAIR v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 124, 115, 102
  • L3 @ MRVL: 142, 99, 140

Sinclair has had a monstrous two months: 142, 99, 140, 88, 110, 143, 135, 147. Great job to the 11% of coaches who got on board. It’ll be another 140 in the sequence against the Tigers. RoMo should also go nicely.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117
  • Round 16: Yeo 64
  • Round 17: Gawn 100
  • Round 18: Cameron 131
  • Round 19: Ryan 99
  • Round 20: Sheezel 160
  • Round 21: Bont 182

Verdict

Sheezel Butters the meta this week. There’s a case to be made for not taking a Friday night flyer on Gulden or Daicos so as to guarantee Sheezel as VC. Otherwise, it’s a pretty nice round. Lot of options and high stakes across the board. Drill your selections and enjoy the footy.

  1. Good write up GD. I’ve got 2 byes this week since I’m straight into prelims so thinking of having a bit of fun with 2 PODs and go Whitfield into Treloar. Can I get their stats please?

    1. Sure thing, GK!

  2. Zerrett playing on outside may hurt his SC scores but its better for the team, dons are bereft of good kicks in the midfield but with parish/shiel back have more inside grunt to compliment caldwell/durham.
So I expect him to play more outside again this week.

  3. Reckon I’ll opt for Xerri over Sheezel for VC… unlike the Cats game, I can’t see Sheezel having much to do down back against the wiggles.

  4. Last week Flanders into Sheezel was a no brainer, a lock as such. Yet you list Bontempelli as your captain

    1. In last week’s Captains thread, GD said his verdict was “Bont, Flanders & Sheezel. Pick two.”. He clearly picked Bont last Friday night over Flanders.

      1. He didn’t quite say that, he was all big on the obviousness of Flanders into Sheezel as the biggest no-brainer of the year (and mentioned Bont as an afterthought), but that’s not to say I don’t appreciate his work or realise it’s a coin toss at times.

    2. Was thinking the same thing. Was surprised to see he had Bont on his list when it was Flanders into Sheezel as the lock

  5. I’m quite surprised how worked up people are about GD changing his decision after writing an article at 3-5am in the morning.
Looking at other sources many had Flanders as their 1st or 2nd choice and same with Sheezel placing them over Bont.

They were considered the top 3 choices by most and were all lock choices.
How many times have you changed a decision just before the bounce after spending days thinking the opposite?

    1. Your captains choice will also change depending on your match up and what your opposition does including what you need to do to get the win. Therefore a late change is not uncommon. Great article as always gd.

  6. Most didn’t get to see the opposition Capt until it was too late Bont playing the first game. I reckon most of the top SC sides went Bont so playing in a do or die final if your opp picked Bont and you didn’t you were gone.

A number of factors annoyed a lot of people just the way it was written and then the kicker btw I picked Bont really sucked. But kudos to GD to put on a brave face and come back after that!

There is never a good thing in SC.

  7. I’m going Butters into Bont. I’m a mad Dees supporter but we’re so midfield week. Fingers crossed we win but Butters goes 160.

  8. It’s a forum, I read all relative information, then I put on my big boy pants, and make a decision, always easier to blame someone else. Do your own Intel and stop bagging on gunboat please,( his .vc/ c is so much better than mine this year) , that’s my 2 cents
