Written by Chaos Theory on July 23 2024

ADELAIDE

Matt Crouch

“In some good news, Matt is preparing to return to play sooner than expected which is a credit to him and the rehabilitation team to have him in this position,” High Performance Manager Darren Burgess said.

“The shoulder surgery was a success and he has progressed faster than initially anticipated.

“Matt has continued running while in rehab and if he is given surgical clearance, can resume contact training and work towards being available in coming weeks which is a welcome boost for the team.”

Nick Murray

“Muz hyperextended his knee early on against Essendon, fortunately, the scans were all clear and he’s feeling pretty good,” Burgess said.

“We aren’t sure how much he will be able to do this week, we are hoping he will be able to train and play but at most he will miss one or two weeks if he can’t get up this week.”

TO BE ASSESSED THIS WEEK:

Lachie Schultz
Forward Lachie Schultz will be available for Sunday’s clash should he complete a contact training session this week. The Magpies’ equal second leading goalkicker sustained a concussion in Round 18 and has successfully moved through the AFL’s concussion protocols.

Charlie Dean
Defender Charlie Dean will also be assessed this week ahead of a hopeful return from concussion. The 23-year-old sustained a concussion in last week’s VFL clash and will be available for selection should he complete contact training this week.

OTHER UPDATES:

Nathan Kreuger
Forward Nathan Kreuger has entered the AFL’s concussion protocols after sustaining a head knock during the first quarter of Collingwood’s Round 19 clash against Hawthorn. Kreuger will continue to work with the Club’s medical team as he works through the protocols.

Beau McCreery
Small forward Beau McCreery is expected to return next week after progressing into team skills training last week. He will complete more team training and skills this week and over the weekend will look to complete full match loads. He is set to be available for Round 21.

Tom Mitchell
Tom Mitchell is making positive progressions in his recovery from a foot injury after the  midfielder underwent a download period over the last 10 days. The 31-year-old is now running with restricted body weight on the anti-gravity treadmill and should he complete a week’s worth of training, will look to progress to outdoor running in the coming weeks.

Brody Mihocek
Forward Brody Mihocek has been able to complete lower body weights and is allowed to sweat, following his pectoral surgery. Mihocek will maintain this for the next two weeks, with his expected return timeframe seven to nine weeks away.

Oscar Steene
Ruckman Oscar Steene has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season as his recovery from a toe injury continues. The 201cm ruck hasn’t undergone any setbacks in his recovery program but hasn’t been able to increase his training loads. He will now turn his focus to being able to return full fitness for the 2025 pre-season.

Aiden Begg
Ruck Aiden Begg is on the verge of his first outdoor running session, an exciting development for the 21- year-old who continues his recovery from a season ending knee injury.

ESSENDON

Jye Caldwell will also be available for selection following his head knock in Friday night’s loss to the Crows, passing the concussion test after the incident and showing no symptoms in the days since.

Darcy Parish Following a diligent and gradual rehab process, Parish will undergo a fitness test later this week and could play.

Matt Guelfi strained his hamstring last week and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

FREMANTLE

Alex Pearce has suffered a new fracture in a different location on his radius bone that was previously injured in round 15.

“It’s not where the previous fracture was, so we will consult surgeons later this afternoon and more than likely have surgery later this week. Fremantle Executive General Manager of Football Joe Brierty went on to confirm that no set timeline had been established for Pearce’s return yet, as the Club would wait on the results of the surgery and specialist consultation before making any decisions.

Neil Erasmus has progressed well through his concussion protocols and is expected to be a test to play later in the week.

“(He) is likely to be available,” Fremantle High Performance Manager Phil Merriman confirmed.

Matthew Johnson Stress reaction in his foot. We will go through some tests early next week and hopefully have him available the following week.

Corey Wagner has been cleared of any injury following the heavy collision he had early in the second quarter with Melbourne’s Kade Chandler.

Oscar McDonald is edging closer to making a return to football following the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he sustained in round one after landing awkwardly.

“He’s progressing through his reconditioning really well,” Merriman said.

“We are hoping to see him before the end of the home and away season.”

GEELONG

Tom Atkins will be a test after suffering a back complant

Tanner Bruhn made a successful return via the VFL on the weekend after recovering from a scaphoid fracture.

Mitch Edwards has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ongoing back complaint.

Oli Wiltshire is one week away from returning.

Cameron Guthrie (3 weeks) and Tom Hawkins (3-4 weeks) continue to work through their rehabilitation programs.

GOLD COAST

Jarrod Witts will need to prove he can train fully this week if he is to become available for selection again after sustaining a fracture in his back in Round 16.

Touk Miller is taking positive strides in his recovery from a fractured wrist and is one to two weeks away from a return to play.

Sam Day is also one to two weeks away from a return from his plantar fascia injury.

Jake Rogers (knee), Levi Casboult (hamstring) and Ethan Read (leg) are all three weeks away.

GWS

Stephen Coniglio and Sam Taylor could both return. The duo will both need to get through Thursday’s main training to prove their fitness.

Isaac Cumming suffered a hamstring strain and after scans confirming the extent of the injury he expected to miss the next six weeks.

HAWTHORN

Jasper Scaife (finger) – Test

“He’s going really well and he’s been conditioning for the past couple of sessions. He’s not doing any ball handling just yet but we’ve got two more sessions this week – one tomorrow and one on Friday – and we’re planning to get him in on some of that to see how it goes. It’s hard to say exactly right now if he’s definitely playing but I would suggest it’s more likely than unlikely. Again, we’ve got two more sessions and we’ll make that decision later in the week.”

Chad Wingard (calf) – 1-2 weeks

“He’s progressing really well. He’s running pain-free, symptom-free and awareness-free. It’s really now just getting a little mini conditioning training phase into him. We are looking at the VFL game at the end of next week. He’ll miss this weekend and potentially next week which is one game before the VFL bye. So at this stage, that’s the plan but there will be a bit more work to do before we make that final decision.”

Josh Bennetts (shoulder) – TBC

“He unfortunately had an incident during the game where he dislocated his shoulder. He was able to get it back in but he took no further part in the game. He’s had some scans since and there’s a little bit of damage that we need to get some expert advice on, so he’ll see a specialist later in the week, we’ll get the right advice and then we’ll make a decision on where we go from there.”

MELBOURNE

Max Gawn is tracking well towards a return, with main training the final test before availability.

“Max trained really well last week and had another great session over the weekend, he’s been an absolute professional in his recovery,” High Performance Manager Selwyn Griffith said.

“He’ll look to integrate into full training tomorrow and then we’ll make an assessment on his availability following training tomorrow.”

Christian Salem  hamstring injury.

“Christian came to the bench after feeling his hamstring cramp in the third period after accelerating,” Griffith said.

“He wasn’t able to return to the field due to a loss of strength.

“Scans have shown that he does have a low-grade hamstring strain, so he’ll miss this week and we’ll continue to progress him through hamstring reconditioning protocols.”

Koltyn Tholstrup was the second casualty from the Sunday game, with delayed concussion symptoms pushing him into required protocols.

“Koltyn had a head knock in the game,” Griffith said.

“He passed the initial SCAT (sport concussion assessment tool) and was cleared of anything there.

“Following us returning to Melbourne, he had some delayed symptoms with headaches and altered vision and has now entered the concussion protocol. So, he’ll progress through that as symptoms settle.”

Jed Adams was sent to hospital for checks after VFL match.

“Jed had an incident in the VFL game where he had a high impact to the sternum and chest and had some pain from that,” Griffith said.

“He went to hospital and fortunately was cleared of any severe damage but does have some internal bruising that will require him to have a week off contact.

“And then we’ll progress him back into contact as his symptoms allow.”

Ben Brown

“Ben had some knee soreness last week following the game, we gave him every opportunity to be able to play the game, but unfortunately just wasn’t able to,” Griffith said.

“So, we’ll reassess that this week, with our main priority to make sure Ben is able to function to be at AFL level for the back end of the season.”

Lachie Hunter is also looking like he’ll make his return via the VFL after a short one-week stint on the sidelines with a minor calf injury.

Lachie Hunter Calf Available
Max Gawn Ankle Test
Jed Adams Lung 1 week
Koltyn Tholstrup Concussion 1 – 2 weeks
Christian Salem Hamstring 3 – 4 weeks
Charlie Spargo Achilles Season
Christian Petracca Spleen Indefinite

NORTH MELBOURNE

Curtis Taylor will miss the next month after scans confirmed a calf injury, he suffered the injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s VFL game against Box Hill.

Tyler Sellers will be sidelined for a week after suffering concussion symptoms following a collision in the same match.

Hamish Free will remain on the sidelines after reporting delayed concussion symptoms following the VFL team’s Round 16 win over Sydney.

Free, who has suffered multiple concussions across the past year, is now reporting reduced symptoms, White said, but will be unavailable to play this weekend.

PORT ADELAIDE

Todd Marshall (hip) and Kane Farrell (hamstring) will be tested throughout the week, while Lachie Jones is expected to exit concussion protocols on Friday, making him eligible for selection.

Connor Rozee is recovering from a corky to the hip pointer, which had him sit out part of the final quarter on Saturday, but is expected to be available.

Ivan Soldo is progressing well with his knee recovery and has been back running over the past fortnight.

Jed McEntee has entered concussion protocols after a head knock during Sunday’s SANFL game.

RICHMOND

Tim Taranto, concussion

“All signs are looking good at the moment. He trained today (Tuesday), he needs to pass his test on Thursday, but all signs are good at the moment for him to return (on Sunday).”

Nick Vlastuin, back

“Nick’s been managing his back pretty much for the whole season. It just got to the point where we thought a week off would really benefit him to finish the year strongly. He trained really strongly today and he’ll be available this week.”

Dustin Martin, back

“He’s obviously been battling his back for a couple of weeks. He hasn’t been able to do much training in that time. He trained really strongly today, he’ll train strongly again Thursday, and we’ll make a call then as to whether he’s available this week.”

Maurice Rioli, ankle

“(He’s tracking) really well. He’s been training for a couple of weeks, he’ll train strongly on Thursday and we’ll make a decision whether we play him this week or wait until after the (VFL) bye.”

Marlion Pickett, calf

“Same boat for Marlion (as Rioli). He trained really strongly today. He’ll need to train the same way on Thursday and we’ll make a call whether he’s available.”

Jack Graham, hip

“He’s just taken a little bit of time to get himself right, Jack. We’re probably, at this stage, thinking it’d be more like next week (Round 21) against North Melbourne (for his return).”

Tom Lynch, hamstring

“So, Tom’s obviously been battling (with his) hamstring the last few weeks. As all Richmond fans know, he hasn’t played a lot of footy the last couple of years, and as a consequence (of that) as well, hasn’t done a pre-season for three years now. So, what we need to do from this point to the end of the year, is make a really smart decision with Tom. We’ll get him back into training in the next couple of weeks and we’ll make a call then.”

Toby Nankervis, concussion

“He’s okay, Toby. He’s frustrated that he’s not training, he loves to be out there the boys. Hopefully he’ll recover this week and we’ll see him next week.”

Oliver Hayes-Brown, concussion

“Ollie’s in the same boat (as Nankervis). He’s doing really well and we’ll see him next week.”

Jack Ross, foot

“Rossy’s really good, we had him him out at training today, it was really good to see him there. He’s flying around the track looking good, and at this stage we’re looking at some game time after the VFL bye, which is next week.”

Liam Fawcett, back

“Today was actually Liam’s first full session since January, so it was great to see big Liam running around. At this stage, we’re looking at him also playing some game time after the VFL bye next week, which is exciting.”

Campbell Gray, hamstring

“Campbell’s obviously coming from a long way back, being in local footy last year. So, we’re gonna use this period now to really work on developing him as an athlete and we’re hoping to see him, if the VFL team qualify for finals, around that time.”

Mate Colina, back

“Mate’s obviously dealing with a really stubborn back issue. He has a specialist appointment in a couple of weeks and we’ll have more information then.”

Dylan Grimes, back

“From all reports (he’s) okay, he’s up and about walking around (after surgery). We’re really hoping to see him at the Club over the next week or so. It would be good to see his face.”

Judson Clarke, knee

“Juddy had a big milestone on Saturday and started running, which was really exciting. It’s important to celebrate those things on these long-term rehabs. So, Saturday was great for Juddy.”

Josh Gibcus, knee

“Josh is going really well. He’s ticking off some major strength milestones in the gym and we’re hoping to see him out running very soon.”

ST KILDA

Seb Ross will miss a significant portion of the remainder of the season after injuring his calf in training last week.

Scans have since shown muscle and tendon damage to the left calf.

Mattaes Phillipou (hip) (1-2 weeks) and Marcus Windhager (hamstring) (3 weeks) are both progressing well with their respective injuries.

Anthony Caminiti remains in the frame for a return this week.

SYDNEY

Tom Papley
Tom sustained a medial ankle ligament injury against Brisbane. He will likely miss 4-6 weeks.

Dane Rampe
Dane sustained a low grade calf strain in the 2nd quarter of Sunday’s game against Brisbane. He is expected to miss 1 – 2 weeks of football.

Will Hayward
Will’s lateral ankle injury sustained in the match has recovered well. He will be a test to play against the Western Bulldogs this Sunday.

Tom Hanily
Tom sustained an ankle injury in a tackle in training last week. He will be a test to return to play this weekend.

Patrick Snell
Patrick has commenced running and strength work. He will progress his speed and volume this week.

Justin McInerney
Justin remains in a brace for his PCL injury. His progress will be reassessed next week.

Jacob Konstanty
Jacob remains in a boot this week. He is conditioning his off legs conditioning training.

Jack Buller
Jack Buller is now 6 weeks after his produced. He is progressing his strength and aerobic training.

WCE

Jake Waterman, Elliot Yeo and Matt Flynn are all poised to resume.

High performance manager Mat Inness is confident all three will clear the last hurdle to resume on Saturday.

Jeremy McGovern is still a chance, he will be a test later in the week. He trained fully today so he will test him on Thursday and see how he goes.”

Liam Duggan is making strong progress from a concussion against Brisbane, but the club will take a cautious approach given it was his second such injury in a little more than a month. So he won’t play this week.

Unfortunately, it appears forward-midfielder Tyler Brockman has played his last game for the year.

“Tyler hurt his ankle a week and a half ago. Unfortunately, it is a syndesmosis and because of the time of the year he won’t make it back to play again this year.

Callum Jamieson still has a bit of a knee issue and an ankle issue he has been dealing with for a while. We are still doing an investigation to see what the outcome will be there, but because he hasn’t run for a while he is still a few weeks away.

“And Coby Burgiel hurt his hamstring last week so he will be three to four weeks from playing.”

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Liam Jones suffered a moderate-grade medial ligament injury a fortnight ago and will need to prove his fitness to face the Swans.

“Liam Jones has been progressing well following his medial ligament knee injury,” Head of Sports Medicine, Chris Bell said.

“He has pulled up well after completing a match parameters training session on Saturday.

“He still needs to tick some boxes for us during our main training session on Friday before we can confirm his availability for this weekend.”

James O’Donnell is at least another week away with a hamstring issue.
