There are many questions floating across the site regarding what to do in the ‘rookiesphere’. Alza’s Rookie Review does not exactly paint a beautifully eye catching picture, and the SC Gods keep interfering with our prized rookies on a weekly basis, and we are all seemingly chewing up the trades at a much more rapid rate than expected. So where are we at ?
I’d like to pose a few questions in this space as a follow up to last week’s rookie poll numbers. The first one simply revolves around the bench cover numbers as opposed to total rookie numbers. I know I was aghast to discover I only had three after shifting the magnets, and one of those was the sub. Despite scoring 2300 I am seriously bummed by my lack of flexibility and forced changes will lead to a downward trend, I fear.
The second part of this poll is designed to give us all a better insight into the overall rookie situation and your plans moving into the byes and beyond.
As the situation is grim, I wonder how many coaches are considering keeping rookies longer than they normally would. For an example, Ashcroft is maxing his BE and could provide a move to a Premo. However as a higher scoring rookie he could be good value for the next two weeks, either to loop or use on field, and then trade at R12. He also could cover R13-15 byes if you are in dire bench cover trouble, like me. So this question is for the byes.
The next question relates to Bench cover for the season. There may be guys with little or no financial value (eg Davey) still getting a game, so do you reconcile that with a “not worth the trade, might as well keep him” attitude.
And lastly for strategic analysis, I’d like to know if your rookie theories are being forced on you, or are they tactically calculated, and those percentages would be interesting. The comments would be more relevant here than any polls beforehand I believe, and think the site would like to know your thoughts and I would appreciate coaches thoughts as well.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the feedback.

I have 4 rookies currently playing on the bench with Weddle, Baker, Wilmot and Mitchell. However I also have Chesser and Johnson that almost look to make a return after injury/suspension.
Cincotta, Ashcroft, McKenna and Chandler were all on the field this week before trades, but McKenna and Chandler will be traded
Easy solution….both Constable and Phillips named !!!
Get the feeling I may need to discuss with the AFL… the decision to name the sub as part of the bench- missed players such as Williams for Port- as he was dropped from teams- only to appear as sub- DAM!!!!!!
I have 6 playing rookies on the bench before trades:
Mitchell, Cincotta, Wilmot, Angwin, Ratugolea, Van Rooyen.
Non playing: Constable, Madden.
I have 3 rookies on field before trades:
Ashcroft, Chandler, Simpson.
Chandler will be traded this week leaving Ashcroft and one other rookie on field. The plan is to go into the byes with only Ashcroft on field.
Hey Jimmy , there is a group here ( mostly techies) who play the game from a different perspective.Interesting series of questions, which go directly to the heart of how I’m playing this year . I’ve made a few false trades but the overarching philosophy has been a goal of team value.
I firmly believe that to be competitive from round 15 on,the team value needs to be 14.2m plus and probably 8 trades need to be held in hand. 6 for misfortune and 2 for luxury the last million is always the hardest! .Too many years I’ve been in a position at that point where my team is trending well upwards but misfortune and a lack of trades to cope has led to a big downwards slide (how bout you ninjas?)Boosts are irrelevant at that point imo. It was interesting to see CT’s reasoning on M cox in this sphere, as it seems to be from a similar place. Hence happy to hold rookies with low b/e and good j/s,midpricers in that basket too. At least 2 forward rounds of super low b/e are a trade in requirement and happy to ditch a player losing cash for one making a bubble jump or a post good score boost..
