There’s a single outstanding downgrade option this week if you need cash and some reliable bench scoring – and who doesn’t need both of those things? Overall though, rookie watch is now aimed mainly at ensuring we have decent back-up scoring, in the event of short-term injuries or late outs for our premiums. Trades are a scarce commodity for just about everyone, so a good bench is going to be crucial on the run home…
Here’s a review of the rookie performances from Round 16. Players “on the bubble” are marked with an asterisk.

Denver GRAINGER-BARRAS | HAW | $184 800 | DNP (33) | N/A |
Goodbye for now: HEdwards, Koschitzke.
THE GOOD: Stocker and Bianco just quietly continue to accumulate, and if you have either then it’s time to start thinking about them as keepers for your bench. Bianco’s 12 possessions at 91% and Stocker’s steady play in a victorious Blues defence should see them hold their spots in their respective 22s, and isn’t that all we really want from our bench at this time of year?
THE BAD: A lot of unfortunate garbage was dished up this week in the backline. Foley (10 disposals) earned an unexpected recall but was barely sighted in an insipid Eagles performance, Murphy (8 disposals) did some good things but nowhere near enough of them, and Connolly promised a lot after a prolific debut, but reverted to a bit player role this week for 12 possessions.
THE UGLY: There was a bit of chatter last week about Highmore being a D6 after a couple of outstanding performances, but he regressed this week to more appropriate numbers for a rookie. Just the 10 touches (albeit at 100% efficiency) for the Saints backman this week.

Luke PEDLAR | ADE | $162 300 | 36 (36) | N/A |
Goodbye for now: Western.
THE GOOD: Some really impressive stuff from the rookie mids this week, with hot trade target Bramble, future trade target Sharp, and unlikely hero Garcia all turning in exceptional performances. Sharp will be top of the trade in list this week after a second consecutive score in the 70s, and deservedly so after playing well in a winning side. Garcia is a pleasant surprise after breaking free from a forward pocket role to roam the wing for the Dogs, picking up 13 touches and a neat goal from relatively limited game time. Bramble was also very tidy in his 16 possession effort running the wing, and looks to be good back-up in the mids for the remainder of the season.
THE BAD: It’s been an incredible ride, but if you still have Jordon it may be time to make a big call on whether he stays or not. Struggled a bit against the Giants (although he certainly wasn’t alone there) and could only muster 67, again from very low time on ground (65%).
THE UGLY: LEdwards raised hopes when he was a late in for the injured Gaff, but unfortunately he walked into a red and white buzzsaw and returned a second consecutive poor score. Unfortunately, he probably becomes a loophole option now.
RUCKS
Player | Club | Price | Score (avg) | BE |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ned REEVES | HAW | $123 900 | DNP (86) | -99 |
Joel AMARTEY (FWD) | SYD | $256 100 (+$34K) | 98 (68) | 13 |
Josh TREACY (FWD) | FRE | $260 300 (+$3.7K) | 30 (44) | 89 |
Callum COLEMAN-JONES (FWD) | RIC | $276 400 (-$5.5K) | 5 (70) | 90 |
Riley THILTHORPE (FWD) | ADE | $344 600 (+$9.5K) | 59 (66) | 94 |
Matt FLYNN | GWS | $422 600 (-$8.9K) | 51 (89) | 113 |
One of the best ways to score well is to play in a side that plays well, and Amartey‘s contributions to his team’s big win were justly rewarded. 12 disposals (12 contested), two goals and an impressive cash gain for the Swan this week.
Treacy and Coleman-Jones are better left undiscussed. Yuck! CCJ in particular is a good reminder to always loop where possible.
Flynn was only fair in a low scoring game, and has officially stopped earning you cash now. Trade or cover?

Goodbye for now: HJones, Scott
THE GOOD: We had the incredible situation on the weekend of a coach benching his key forwards to create space for a second-year small forward. That’s how good Weightman was early on for the Dogs, doing it all in the first quarter and finishing with four majors in his maiden Supercoach ton. Don’t expect too many efforts like that in the near future, but maybe he’s a good bench keeper now? Job security seems good, anyhow. Dow continues his late-season renaissance with a 22 possession, one goal performance against the Dockers. Probably too expensive to bring in now though?
THE BAD: I really like Holmes, but unfortunately he plays for a team that has little use for rookies this year and he got lumped with the vest this week. Came in for Jeremy Cameron in the second quarter and gave a good account of himself, but no doubt it’ll be back to the ressies again this week for Max.
THE UGLY: Dow gets his second listing this week for ghosting his way through the second half against Freo. How can a player be on 81 (?) at halftime and finish the game on 84? Incredible! Poulter has well and truly hit the wall now, and looks in desperate need of a rest to freshen up. 7 clangers this week for the young Pies wingman killed off his scoring and saw him drop a bundle of cash.

Good stuff Chillo, solid write up as ever and I have appreciated your work week on week.
Just a question on looping as you’ve mentioned it twice. I’m only in my 2nd season doing Supercoach so I still have lots to learn. I understand how to use the VC/C loophole, but could you explain how/when you might loophole across other lines and things that ned to be considered when doing so?
Any additional advice would be appreciated.
Cheers, Wayne
I’ll let Chillo explain how to loophole off the bench as he will no doubt be more succinct than I could be, but beware the late out leaving you with a doughnut and beware the late call up leaving you with lesser player on the field.
…not to mention using an F Macrae to loop and he gets a 5min gig as med sub
Hey Wayno, thanks for reading!
The emergency loophole works in a similar way to the VC/C one. Put the E on someone who plays early in the round. If they score well, then you can put a non-playing player on the field to ‘take’ that score. Or you can chance it and put someone else on field and hope that they score more than your emergency.
For example, Coleman-Jones played the Thursday night game last week. The smart play would have been to put the E on him. When he only managed 5 points, he could just be ignored and someone else could have taken his place.
Unfortunately, the move relies on having a non-playing player on the line you’re looping on. So a duffer like me, with 8 active forwards last week, couldn’t use the loophole and decided that CCJ should score best against the Suns. Sounded good in theory, but….
Great thanks Chillo, that certainly gives me a better understanding contextually.
I too had CCJ on field and benched Weightman (ffs) & McCreery.
To confirm I actually get it, in this example; If I’d have had CCJ benched (with E on) and wanted to take his score, I would move McCreery on field, getting CCJ’s score as emergency. After CCJ’s 5 pointer the prudent move would have been to shift Weightman on field instead of McCreery…?
Got it!
Love the look of Sharp as a downgrade with good JS, but already having Newk and Bramble on mid bench as a bit of cover means I will give him a miss.
Hi could someone please calculate or project for me what score would Walsh need to score this week if his value was to end up at 576k after this week .
I want to get him from round 18 and need him to remain below this 576k figure
Hi Murray,
My rough calcs have Walsh’s required score to be 147 to reach $576k.
Robertson would drop approx. $5,800 ($341.6k) if he scores 40, and drop $10,200 ($337.2k) if he were to score a 30.
Caveat, there are probably more accurate ways to do this than I have used, however this should give a ball park figure 🙂
Hope that helps,
Wayne
Thanks Wayne very much appreciated
Wayne, the calculator I use on another website is showing a lower score for Walsh to hit 576k. Based on that calculator, if Walsh scores anything over 116, he will exceed that price.
The numbers I got for Robertson are close to yours (334k if he scores 30, and 338k if he scores 40).
Hi Daniel,
You’re right, apologies. And sorry Murray. I just redid the (rough) numbers and this time i’m getting a score of ~106 to reach $576k.
Obviously this is vastly different to the 147 I’d calculated previously. I mistakenly added the required score above the current BE (49) to Walsh’s projected score rather than his BE.
Cheers, Wayne
Hi could someone please calculate for me what price would Dev Robertson be after this week if he scores only a 30 or 40
this week .
Can someone calculate how much Bont would have to score to be 700k?
Need him to be under to finish thanks
about 182.
His BE is 168.
Cheers FT
