Game Chat – Carlton v Hawthorn

Where and when: MCG, 1:45pm (AEST)

Last time they met: R9 2020: Carlton 9.4 (58) DEF BY Hawthorn 14.5 (89) at Optus Stadium (boy last year was a crazy year!)

Scoreless, five goals behind and on the cusp on a fifth straight defeat after just 15 minutes. At that point, damage control might have been on Alastair Clarkson’s mind – not the prospect of a stunning turnaround and 31-point win over Carlton. But the remarkable comeback, inspired by nine of the next 10 goals, helped the Hawks finally kickstart a lagging season with a rousing 14.5 (89) to 9.4 (58) win. Tom Mitchell (28 disposals, eight tackles) and James Worpel (20 disposals, five tackles) were at the heartbeat of the seismic shift in momentum, with their work at the coal face consistently putting Hawthorn on the front foot after quarter-time. Patrick Cripps (27 disposals, eight clearances) was prominent early, but like most of his Carlton teammates his influence faded the longer the match went as his side’s growing finals chances suffered an untimely and regrettable blow.

Match Preview: In a battle of the 2 Tassie-aligned teams, will we get a sell out crowd? I tipped the Roos last week on the back of their performance the week before against the Dees only to be disappointed. Jeff Kennett reckons the Hawks are a couple of years away from having a competitive side again which may well be true but I reckon the cattle they’ll bring to this game will be more than enough to take care of today’s opposition.

Motts Watch:

Carlton
(Takes deep breath) Saad, Walsh, Owies, McKay, Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, Docherty, Williams, Fogarty, Murphy, Casboult, Betts, Gibbons, Silvagni, Pittonet, SPS, TDK, and Parkes.

Hawthorn
Titch, Kosi, CJ, and Imp

Mottsy’s Tip: Carlton by 25 (tipping record 19/27).

      • Hi, GD.
        Good luck.
I have Walsh, who was my VC but like you, lack non players, except likely subs. I wish that crystal ball was working. lol.
Might take a punt on going all out on Duncan? or Walsh?

I have CJ, Kozi and Phillips also in this game.

All the best with your teams.

        • Yep, either Duncan and Walsh are great straight C’s if you need to. I’ve gone Grundy for the straight C.

          • Grundy is the safest option but all my opponents seem to have gone that way.
I need to something creative to gain ground.

  2. Walsh VC
    Impey
    Jiath
    and..Kosi looped at D7.

If Kosi goes well, I will be sweating on Highmore not being named sub.

Hoping Jiath can bounce back after his head knock last week.

  3. Hey motts I hope for both of our sakes today it’s just a good close game. I’ve got a feeling Walsh is going to destroy us in the middle today with 40+ but hoping hawks win!

  6. And of course I hear Williams is having issues with his right leg and is going to get some work on it. I’m glad I got rid of him!

  8. Owies an under the radar cow, wow. Kicked his way into the best 22.

Nice work if you scooped him up. Usually rookie HFs are no bueno, but him and McCreery are going along real nice.

  9. Have the VC on Walsh but no one available to loophole.
Haven’t traded Powell yet. Is there someone who comes back next week I can trade to or is that just crazy. We could be talking 400 points.

    • Ronin O’Connor (ADEL) will eventually get a run and looks good, we’ll find out in about half an hour whether or not he’ll be the med sub.

If he is the med sub, you could grab Hutchings (WCE) instead. He’s off the injury list and returning through the WAFL.

      • Matthew Nicks said yesterday that Ronin O’Connor would be the medical sub but I suppose anything could happen in the meantime? Injury to someone?

        • Oh, okay. Don’t go O’Connor, grab Hutchings.

Bianco (COLL) and Shipley (GWS) also chances to get runs at it, but Hutchings back in as soon as he’s available.

Would only do that if Walsh goes seriously large though, so wait and see the game out. Hard tag in the second could see him taper off.

  10. Has been a cracking contest, hard natured footy. While obviously not ideal we’ve given it a crack but just packed some polish today. Felt better this week than the last couple weeks
