Breakout City #6 – Jack Scrimshaw

Written by Chillo on February 15 2021

In this ten-part series we’ll try to find you that elusive breakout contender, the underpriced and undervalued gem who could decide your Supercoach season’s fate. Some basic criteria (which are a little flexible):

  • Player is entering their second, third or fourth season in the league,
  • Starting price somewhere between $350K and $500K, and
  • Averaged somewhere between 70 to 90 ppg the previous season.

Next up is a Hawks defender set to take on more responsibility….

Jack SCRIMSHAW (HAW)

2021 Starting Price: $399 600 defender

Scoring History (most recent first): 74.4 (13 games), 64.5 (10), 46.4 (4)

Why he will BREAKOUT this year: Drafted seventh overall in the 2016 draft by the Suns, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the lanky defender from Sandringham. Noted for a scything left foot, Scrimshaw struggled to earn a spot in the Gold Coast 22 with rumours circulating of a lack of commitment in training. He also endured battles with a broken cheekbone and associated concussion. Traded to the Hawks at the end of 2018, Scrimshaw eventually worked his way into the Hawthorn defence and has slowly but steadily established himself as an AFL footballer, culminating in the club’s Most Improved award last year. His modus operandi is using that left foot to set up play off the half back flank, but he has the height to neutralise an opponent if required. The big attraction for potential Scrimshaw owners this year is the ACL-enforced absence of Hawks backline general James Sicily, which will surely open up more opportunities for Jack.

Why he won’t: It’s just his general manner and indicative of nothing, but he comes across as a lackadaisical type which can be frustrating to watch if you’re an owner. Still unproven at this level after four years in the system, so there’s probably more guesswork involved here than the other options presented so far in this series.

VERDICT: It’s a no from me, but I think we should be watching very, very closely. Scrimshaw is an elite user of the footy, it’s just a question of supply and workrate.

What will JACK SCRIMSHAW average in Supercoach 2021?

  1. He was in my very first side picked but ultimately went away from him as his numbers don’t stack up well against other defenders of that type at that age.

He had questions about his focus and dedications at gold coast.

  2. I’ve finished the Hawks team review and will post soon – he seems likely to be a list clogger. I actually prefer Greaves now and Will Day in a couple of years.

    1. Still can’t believe Clarko gave Greaves those three games at the end of last year and completely ruined him for this season. Doesn’t he care about Supercoach at all?

  3. As a hawks fan i picked him up back end of last year. Unforunately hes too expensive to pick up at that price for how many points hes gonna avg this year. Its really hard to justify picking any of my boys this year!
