Captaincy Candidates – Round 12

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 30 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

BUTTERS v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 84, 130, 96
  • L3 @ AO: 127, 124, 82

While the Blues have ratcheted up their contest work, Butters at home in a high stakes one remains a great proposition for 125.

DAICOS v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 139, 69
  • L3 @ MRVL: 147, 139, 124

Daicos was sensational last week with 35, 19 contested and 7 tackles. With the Dogs’ midfield now missing contested king Libba and recent competition clearance leader Ed Richards, things will be wide open for Daicos to go 140.

BONTEMPELLI v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 123, 125, 92
  • L3 @ MRVL: 135, 142, 125

That leaves Bont to carry and do everything himself, which is just how he likes it. Solid for 120.

Captaincy Candidates

SERONG v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 93, 87, 75
  • L3 @ TIO: N/A

Dees a great open contest midfield opponent. The inimitable and consistent Serong a lock for 130.

RYAN v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 91, 110, 141
  • L3 @ TIO: N/A

With full defensive economy, Ryan too is always an option. Dees a relatively good match up once pressure is applied at the source and they start just bombing it in. Also solid for 130.

GAWN v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 98, 114, 118
  • L3 @ TIO: 111, 50, 135

From potential late out to a 180, Maxxy is simply off tap. Freo’s Darcy-Jackson combo just doesn’t work. Neither truly gets going at center bounce and they can’t work their opponent. Cameron slayed them from 128 and 21 touches. Can see Maxxy at Traeger going 150.

Smoky Pick

MARSHALL v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 104, 88, 50
  • L3 @ OS: 104, 88, 67

A triple barrell of smoky picks, starting with Marshall. Got towelled by Gawn, yes, but goes from the hardest ruck match up to the easiest this week. Also suspect the Saints will throw everything at us to overcompensate. RoMo I like here for an out of the gates 140.

STEWART v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 115, 161, 92
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 110, 84, 108

Stewart’s problem this year? Three things. First, economy eaten by Holmes. Second, teams have started to figure him out and go after him directly or via system. Third, just actually playing poorly – he was incredibly fumbly and errant last week. That all said, the Tigers are a glorious match up both on and behind the ball. Watch Stewart jail out with 140+ at GMHBA.

MERRETT v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 114, 136, 107
  • L3 @ PFS: 71, 114, 119

Zerrett’s recently been having these low-hard to dig out of DE starts but seems to luckbox his way to tons with goals. Think the repeat stoppage games the Suns force will be good for him this week though and his on-field leadership will be essential on the road. Back for 130.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132

Verdict

Daicos into Ryan will be the move for me but with the back end security of Serong, Ryan and Gawn, as well as the ability to loop anyone through the byes, you’ll have license to go wherever you like with the VC. Back yourself, hunt for the highest upside.

  1. Plenty of good VC options this week.

I’m considering my new R2 – English as VC. Coming up against solo ruck Cameron, tapping to a hungry Dogs midfield up against a depleted Pies midfield, and playing at Marvel, surely we lock him in for 130+.

  2. Thanks again for the write up GD

    I’m tossing up between:

VC – Daicos or Bont (playing against each other at Marvel)

    into

CAPT – either Serong or Gawn (playing against each other in Alice Springs)

Given the heat / slippery footy in Alice Springs, am slightly leaning towards Daicos into Serong

But any of the above 4 x options should be OK IMO

  3. I’m thinking Butters into Growl…4 home games so far at People First Stadium has seen him score 136, 135, 155, 137…not bad, plus 1 of his 2 “home” games at TIO was 128…

    1. DAWSON v Hawks

      L3 v Hawks: 78, 80, 73
      L3 @ MCG: 107, 115, 149

Didn’t name him. Score last week was buoyed by thrashing West Coast and a lethal first.

I’m not a fan but by all means give him the VC if you’re feeling it. B18 you can loop anyone and Freo Dees super safe backups.

    1. Steele playing Eagles and either way no. Been a bum and Reid, Yeo, Ginbey and Kelly will beat Saints at the source.

  4. Has anyone done any stats on captains scores playing at TIO? Obviously very hot and draining.

Just wondering if this might be an occaision where a tag team of darcy and jackson could tire out gawn?

    1. FWIW, forecast in the Alice on Sunday is 19 degrees, 60% humidity. Not quite apocalyptic conditions. The tag team is a valid concern though. Lemme have a quick squizz:

      vs English & Lobb: 162
      vs Reeves & Chol: 113
      vs Soldo & Finlayson (& Dixon): 177
      vs Nankervis & Naismith: 162
      vs Stanley & Blicavs: 111
vs Pittonet & De Koning: 111

The only real strong rucking combo in there is probably Pittonet & De Koning, and yeah, he had a reduced output… and he probably has had his lower scores against the more ‘dynamic’ pairings… make of it what you will!

I’ll probably opt for the C on Serong instead, unless Darcy doesn’t play – which is not a non-zero possibility!
