Captaincy Candidates – Round 15

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 21 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

WALSH v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 104, 126, 158
  • L3 @ MCG: 87, 119, 91

With Blicavs forced into that ruck spot, Walsh will avoid attention and have a field day against what remains a bare bones midfield. A lock for 120.

GAWN v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 130, 80, 89
  • L3 @ MCG: 132, 180, 111

Xerri is tough as nails and now quite a negating opponent but still like Maxxy fresh off the bye with the Dees desperate to respond and steady their season. Gets it done around the ground, 130.

LDU v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 106, 97, 97
  • L3 @ MCG: 149, 125, 119

Probably had his stock driven down by word of a scan and crucial fitness test but the Dees are going to be a juicy VC/C opponent for the rest of the year with Petracca gone and Satan well off it. If he’s good to go, he’ll be on for 140 – like Sheezel as well.

Captaincy Candidates

MERRETT v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 121, 143, 110
  • L3 @ MRVL: 94, 101, 108

Suppose Petch or whoever else we give a spin on ball could look at him but probably play it straight given we know we’re not a chance at center bounce with no Reid and Sheed. Unencumbered, Zerrett goes 140.

RYAN v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 93, 63, 128
  • L3 @ OS: 132, 111, 106

A safe enough fall back now that he’s back at Optus. Suns not a fly match up one way or the other but you back him for his average of 125. Similar proposition for Serong but got the Dockers losing the midfield battle.

ROWELL v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 109, 78, 54
  • L3 @ OS: 165, 157, 54

Despite them all being markedly better at home, it’ll pretty much be Rowell and the round about gang triple teaming Serong. Young is under a minor injury cloud and high variance anyway, Fyfe has become a non-contributor and Brayshaw is well off it. Got the Suns on ballers all going 120+ here.

Steer Clear

BUTTERS v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 101, 114, 124
  • L3 @ AO: 98, 127, 124

Zzzzzz. Gets Berry – oh, and Windhager next week.

HEENEY v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 109, 54, 82
  • L3 @ ENS: 54, 119, 73

Giants used Bedford as a tagger with great success last week. Probably goes to Heeney with Warner having played in a hybrid role last week. Low-ton.

Smoky Pick

FLANDERS v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 62
  • L3 @ OS: 62

I was at Dogs Dockers last week and was absolutely struck by how schizophrenic Freo were going I50: they either spot an uncontested mark and play it like a training drill or just blast off. Very much a mobile defender’s dream, so Flanders to fill up for 130 if that remains unchanged.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141

Verdict

Zerrett into Flanders on my end. Gawn and Walsh strong settlers for those with them.

  1. Could see Cats attempting an Irish tag (O’Connor or Mullin) on Walsh if he lights it up early. Especially after Swans mids were left unchecked and utterly destroyed Geelong after qtr time

  2. Grundy into LDU for me at this stage.
    Possibly Grundy into sheezel.
Looking at our sides emergencies I don’t see LDU being a late out but just not sure I trust him with the C if his not 100%.

    1. wouldn’t exactly say 114 was a fail?? Bird in the hand?

But if you want to risk it for an extra (possible) 10-20 points then maybe Ryan?
