Captaincy Candidates – Round 17

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 5 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 128, 145, 71
  • L3 @ MCG: 64, 105, 150

Even though Caldwell plays that quasi hang-off MID role, Daicos is off tap and tends to rise to the occasion. 140 if he can break free, no risk as VC.

ZERRETT v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 127, 133, 123
  • L3 @ MCG: 78, 125, 119

The Pies didn’t have much of an answer for Anderson and Miller last week, so continuing to be a good midfield opponent. Zerrett we like on ball for a 125.

BONTEMPELLI v Port

  • L3 v Port: 125, 145, 128
  • L3 @ AO: 141, 145, 128

Drew too slight to match up on him, so Bont to pazz out once again. Solid for 130. Have him narrowly ahead of Butters on account of the Dogs’ engine room being stronger.

Captaincy Candidates

SERONG v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 137, 108, 86
  • L3 @ OS: 121, 91, 150

Leading MID v Tigers. Very easy one here. Goes 140.

RYAN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 197, 83, 128
  • L3 @ OS: 93, 132, 111

Cox returning should help free up Ryan again – although we would have loved Pearce back too. Against the Tigers with all that economy, he’ll be right for 120.

DUNKLEY v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 89, 62, 146
  • L3 @ G: 144, 89, 146

Dunkley interchangeable with Neale, and even Zorko, here. Like all the Lions for 120s with the Crows leaving Adelaide for the first time for a while.

Steer Clear

WALSH v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 130, 90, 149
  • L3 @ ENS: 149, 71, 80

Gets Bedford. Pass.

HEENEY v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 75, 114, 59
  • L3 @ MRVL: 94, 83, 83

Gets Windhager. Pass.

Smoky Pick

XERRI v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 82, 51, 53
  • L3 @ MRVL: 141, 103, 96

To think I traded this man, my god. Running as the #3 ruck at 111.6 behind G&G. Expect that average to tick up as he gets Moyle and no Witts on Saturday. Time for his first 150 I say.

GAWN v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 109, 73, 91
  • L3 @ MCG: 114, 132, 180

Now this is tricky. Last time we played the Dees not only did we whip them but we went to school on Maxxy. BJ took front position at every opportunity and the whole side was physical with him around the ground. Dropped him to a 109. Think it’ll be a different story in Melbourne and after our torrid showing last week. Maxxy to clap back with 140.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117
  • Round 16: Yeo 64

Verdict

Daicos tempting me as insurance and do like Zerrett’s raw match up but currently have Ryan and Bont penciled in. If you’ve got Serong, that’s an easy one.

  1. Thinking left field. Maxy could go ballistic v ruckless Eagles, and can follow up with Dunkley at home v Crows if need be.

  2. I have been considering the left-field Xerri pick. Playing at the same time as the Dogs and Power makes it a lil less palatable though.

  3. Got massively burnt last week with Houston. Sticking to Serong and Gawn. Will take 120… or anything over 59

  4. Thinking Merrett or Daicos into Bont

Leaning towards Daicos over Merrett – but there is a lot of noise about Essendon really needing to tag Daicos tonight ?

If I go Daicos as VC, hopefully the tag from Essendon is a “semi loose” one

Not like the Saints Windhager “full blown wrestling war like tag” 🙂

  5. Great work, my vc /captain choses haven’t hit the mark as I like to throw in a pod sometimes, Definitely would be higher placed and winning some of the close matches I lost if I just followed your selections, Again Great work Gunboat truly appreciated

  6. Will go Xerri vc (original pick and held all season thankfully) and Gulden C , can change to Dunkley/ Zorko

  7. Was set on Daicos into Bont all week but have bought in Serong purely for his match up. Gawn also a great option, lots to consider.
    TU – Daicos into Serong
    TD – Serong into Gawn

  8. Who gets the C? (Bont failed this week)
T/u one of the Freo duo, Serong or Ryan
    T/d big Maxxy
    Thanks
