Captaincy Candidates – Round 18

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 12 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 129, 91
  • L3 @ MCG: 92, 64, 105

Cats have a bunch of types who could put the screws to him but as first drop in a high stakes encounter taking an insurance VC might make sense. 140 if left alone, low-ton if tagged.

GULDEN v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 96, 106, 52
  • L3 @ SCG: 95, 157, 82

Phillips out of the side, so like Gulden to fill up here for 130.

ENGLISH v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 88, 99, 105
  • L3 @ MRVL: 70, 136, 88

Got a little mojo back last week and now gets another timid heads up ruck opponent in Pittonet and an ailing TDK. Doesn’t have heaps of upside but should be solid enough for a 120 and you can relax.

WALSH v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 117, 90, 89
  • L3 @ MRVL: 114, 130, 166

Walsh a lock for 130. Dogs let Butters and Rozee rip them apart and just have no outside run whatsoever, which is where Walsh’s ceiling is unlocked.

Captaincy Candidates

ZERRETT v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 134, 147, 119
  • L3 @ MCG: 145, 78, 125

Neal Bullen hasn’t tagged since the Pies game and left Yeo and Reid alone last week. I’m a little worried that the strength of Zerrett’s game last week will tempt Goodwin but assuming that isn’t the case Zerrett good for 125.

BUTTERS v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 81, 42, 76
  • L3 @ PFS: 104, 53, 73

Port starting to roll, no Miller, Drew goes to Anderson, Butters and Rozee have their way OB. Like both for 140.

GREEN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 89, 106, 71
  • L3 @ MCG: 97, 92, 115

If they don’t use Graham as a tagger again this is just the kind of game Green could fill up in on a wide deck. 150 if left alone. Like Whitfield here too.

NEALE, DUNKLEY & ZORKO v Eagles

Naming them all, just like last week. Easy proposition to fill up against West Coast.

Steer Clear

BONTEMPELLI v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 112, 105, 155
  • L3 @ MRVL: 157, 162, 99

Popped him here purely to flag the possibility of Cincotta but even so Bont is Bont. Expecting him to bounce back after a truly flat performance last week. Delivers his average of 125.

Smoky Pick

SERONG v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 140, 105, 127
  • L3 @ UTAS: N/A

Demoted to the smoky given the Hawks density OB and the away venue but could have a left field performance as the Dockers find themselves in a tight spot. Low-ton or 130.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117
  • Round 16: Yeo 64
  • Round 17: Gawn 100

Verdict

Gulden into Zerrett for me at the moment, hoping to hold my nerve and not take insurance on Daicos tonight.

      1. Marshall and Brigg’s big scores came down in TAS. I think its the Meek matchup more than Hawks which has me looking at it. Jackson should torch him around the ground.

Its looking like no rain in Tas either.

  1. I preface my selections with the warning that recently I am the proverbial ‘Kiss of Death’
My VC selection 2 weeks ago crawled to just around the hundred mark so put the C on Houston and was ‘rewarded’ with 58 – my lowest scoring player on field.
Lat week it was Gulden for the VC but he forgot that the game goes 4 quarters so put the C on Serong (took it off Dunkley last minute for some reason) and again was rewarded with a score lower than my VC.
So this week (drum roll please) ….
    Rozee VC and Dunkley C

    1. Away from home and against Sydney?

I rate him but not super jazzed about that match up.

      1. Home or Away hasn’t effected Sheezel all season and against a non Heeney Sydney that have just lost 2 in a row?

I think he will push 130+ but guess we will wait and see!

  2. Gone the big speculator! Bought in S DeKoning for Miller. I was super keen on putting the VC on him when I thought DCam was out. Even with DCam in, might still go there. Dunkley with the C.
I have been looking mostly at matchups. So, like everyone else, Serong burnt me as C last time. So switching more to form. Dunkley is red hot at the moment, so feels ok. He has burnt me before as C, but if you never picked anyone whoever burnt you before there would be few choices left.

  3. I’m thinking Serong and Dung battle for 90s while Ryan and Jackson fill up. Anyway I’m going Butters into dunks. Hunting a 150+ again

  4. Nice CC, GD.
I like Zerrett into Dunkley, both average 113+ against oppo and 105/101 at their respective venues (after removing highest & lowest scores for ‘smoothing’ purposes)

  5. Absolute YOLO ‘I’ve given up on SC so I don’t care anymore’ picks: J Dawson into Flanders.

  6. Bont into Merrett for me.

Playing it safe and fielding a doughnut, as I have Heeney, Gawn, Rankine, Fisher and McGovern. Nearly had the full carnage sweep if I had Miller!
