Captaincy Candidates – Round 21

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 4 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

ENGLISH v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 145, 96, 50
  • L3 @ MRVL: 134, 130, 127

Feels a little indulgent to keep going Tingles but he’s rocking a 156.7 3RD average and has rocketed into #1 OA over the last month. Gawn going large v Soldo is a major tease but it reinforced that Soldo plays on lower TOG and is generally a weaker HO ruck. Tingles solid for 130+

BONTEMPELLI v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 122, 136, 107
  • L3 @ MRVL: 126, 123, 114

Got the screws put to him by Ward after QT but even then he’s been pretty flat lately – only so much he can do. He’ll definitely have some more Atlas performances in him but his scoring distribution is more a plateau than a mountain right now. Tigers on a Friday a big occasion, solid for 120 and outside chance to go large.

MERRETT v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 110, 111, 119
  • L3 @ MRVL: 139, 105, 136

O’Neill got CBAs in a heavily rotated midfield although wasn’t put on LDU. Zerrett and Dons should relish a soft kill. On for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

PETRACCA v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 167, 114, 78
  • L3 @ BA: 78, 97, 64

Returned to a more fulsome CBA load last week and was capital with 29 touches, 141 and an askew 1.3. Forward or on ball he’ll crush the Roos this weekend. 140~.

GAWN v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 80, 89, 63
  • L3 @ BA: 63, 212, 111

Same goes for his compatriot Maxxy, who has returned to SC regality now that he’s solo again. BJ Williams tonned against Goldy and Xerri chopping it up. Gawn to be closer to 200 than 100.

*written prior to confirmation of extended benches, obviously if Grundy comes in then Gawn’s a pass

DUNKLEY v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 109, 155, 87
  • L3 @ OS: 143, 119, 93

He just gets it done. Freo’s midfield were nice last week but Dunkley’s scoring stream sort of insulates him from match conditions, form and venue. A lock for his average of 120+.

Steer Clear

DAICOS v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 113
  • L3 @ MCG: 82, 130, 132

Daicos being tagged is probably the biggest talking point in football right now. Maginness comes for him, low-ton. Avoid.

I’ve glossed over the Crows Suns game. Two strong engine rooms, potential for matchups and hard to read.

Smoky Pick

BUTTERS v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 99, 106, 118
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 118

A very far out call but the Cats are languishing and will throw every at Saturday – eliciting an all cylinders effort from Butters. A fair shout for a monstrous 140 with the Cats midfield deficiencies.

History

  • Round 1: Green 132
  • Round 2: Baird 147
  • Round 3: Satan 156
  • Round 4: Tingles 145
  • Round 5: Tingles 137
  • Round 6: Miller 40
  • Round 7: Satan 134
  • Round 8: Satan 136
  • Round 9: Tingles 88
  • Round 10: RoMo 126
  • Round 11: Baird 115
  • Round 12: Daicos 123
  • Round 13: Daicos 118
  • Round 14: Dunkley 137
  • Round 15: Gulden 164

  • Round 17: Neale 142
  • Round 18: English 173

  • Round 20: English 163

Verdict

Tingles into Petracca on my end.

  1. Does Nank coming in for Tigers impact English’s ceiling? I seem to remember reading Nank being hard to score against.

    1. The inclusion of Nank has me avoiding English this week. But given English’s form, that may be a mistake.
Huge FOMO with no Merrett in my team. Feel like I am certainly giving away a big start to any team that has him this week.
Dawson into Petracca for me. Dawson has some good numbers against the Suns and no Touk. Thinking that Rowell might go to Laird in H2H.

  2. I’m needing to nail my VC as no Merrett or Petracca. I have English, Bont & Libba so will be hoping I make the right choice. If VC fails, unsure who I will have to Captain.

  3. Disappointed you went with English last week after talks of going Stewart and Bont at the same time. Was hoping to see you manage to get that to work

Also Richmond are considering a shut down role on Bont after what Ward did last round.

  4. English into Zerrett.

Hard to pass up English’s past 3 games and Essendon v West Coast is enticing.
