Captaincy Candidates – Round 23

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 16 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

ZERRETT v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 132, 139, 57
  • L3 @ MRVL: 145, 106, 108

Both outfits capable of tagging tonight, however the stakes and two high use midfields should force an open contest – also derisked as the first game. Zerrett left alone 120.

GULDEN v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 149, 152, 130
  • L3 @ MRVL: 85, 131, 152

Caldwell watches MIDs at stoppage but back Gulden’s legs and expansive outside game for a 120. Goes beautifully against the Dons.

FLANDERS v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 41, 22, 62
  • L3 @ PFS: 141, 106, 114

Dees midfield safe for Flanders to crash into for 130. They’ve been leaking and submerged in off-field issues and injury.

Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 129, 97, 102
  • L3 @ MCG: 109, 75, 102

Pies tagged on the outside last week but Neale, as well as Dunks, will be right on the inside for 125+. Lions will want to put in a good shift at the G.

BUTTERS v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 124, 134, 79
  • L3 @ AO: 132, 89, 159

Tepid tag by the Crows last week. They’ll play it straight up with Rankine building. Solid for 125 in what could be a scare for Port.

XERRI v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 141, 103, 35
  • L3 @ MRVL: 144, 109, 119

He just keeps getting the purest ruck run. No Tingles this week. Whipped him earlier this year anyway. Dogs MIDs obviously concerning but against a nobody ruck he’ll still go 130.

Steer Clear

GIANTS v DOCKERS

Just hard to see who can break through here. Serong gassed but keeping his head above water in terms of scoring with scoreboard involvement. Green finds a ton but is perenially unclean. Ryan’s also just had the one bounce back game and is away from home. I’d pass and just enjoy the game.

DOGS v ROOS

Not a steer clear but rather an asterisk. One of Bont, Treloar or Richards gets tagged. They went for Treloar last time with Phillips to great effect. Do they take a crack at Bont given his immense form? Although Phillips doesn’t quite match up on him and Bont did beat a tag last week. Richards can also draw a tag when he starts hot. All a disclaimer to say one Dog gets tagged and I’d have a little more security in Bont than Treloar.

Smoky Pick

MARSHALL v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 127, 141, 82
  • L3 @ MRVL: 126, 126, 135

Cats no ruck, Marshall in exquisite form. 140.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137

  • Round 4: Butters 119

  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117
  • Round 16: Yeo 64
  • Round 17: Gawn 100
  • Round 18: Cameron 131
  • Round 19: Ryan 99
  • Round 20: Sheezel 160
  • Round 21: Bont 182
  • Round 22: Sheezel 122

Verdict

Not sure I have the balls or patience to get creative around Bont (throw him into Yeo or Walsh?), so currently liking Gulden into Flanders. Xerri’s one I think you definitely take.

    1. GAWN v Suns

      L3 v Suns: 130, 88, 138
      L3 @ PFS: 130, 88, 121

I’ve got him too but Witts pretty solid and Suns midfield will eat clearance. Pass from me but seeing as you’ve got Xerri you can take a flyer.

      Good luck.

With no confidence gunna try Butters as VC.

  2. Any thoughts on Zorko getting a good score this week might go Zorko into Xerri since English is out this week

  3. I am going Neale into Xerri.

Would have preferred to put the V on Xerri but just don’t have anyone suitable to C in the last two games (not that I think I will need to).

Xerri vs Darcy right now is just not a fair fight.

Hopefully Neale can go off and score 150 plus which would probably (yes only probably) make me take the C of Xerri.

  4. Reports that Wil Phil has been dropped. Bont has scored 130+ in 7 of his 15 games against North. One of Xerri or Bont seems a great captaincy option.
