Captaincy Candidates – Round 24

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 23 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 64, 118, 112
  • L3 @ MCG: 116, 101, 147

Don’t love that the game’s dead rubber but the Dees remain a great OB opponent. Daicos solid for 120.

STEWART v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 135, 106, 95
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 120, 121, 115

Stewart will dance all over our graves in Geelong. A lock for 130.

FLANDERS v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 124, 24, 53
  • L3 @ MCG: N/A

33 and 29 for Newcombe and Worpel last week. Flanders to be right on the mark with 130 against the ever leaky Tigers.

XERRI v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 144, 75, 79
  • L3 @ UTAS: N/A

Meek is no cakewalk but Xerri is in such brutal form that I think you give him a look down in Tassie. Has all round economy for 125 to cap things off.

Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 109, 89, 198
  • L3 @ G: 87, 78, 179

After getting done out of a top four spot by the Pies last week, the Lions will have no choice but to savage Essendon to ensure a home final from fifth. Neale and Dunks to tear it up. Neale with 140 in him. Don’t mind Zorko either.

GREEN v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 95, 135, 102
  • L3 @ MARS: N/A

The GWS ruck advantage and stakes of this one will be conducive to Green’s contested profile. On for 130, along with Treloar, Whitfield and Edwards. High octane clash.

SERONG v Port

  • L3 v Port: 110, 94, 105
  • L3 @ OS: 114, 111, 140

On paper you wouldn’t really VC/C into the Dogs, Giants, Dockers or Port but the decisive nature of the games brings those #1 MIDs into the fore. If the game’s live, Serong 130.

BUTTERS v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 130, 129, 65
  • L3 @ OS: 129, 55, 74

Butters relishes a fierce contest and has had a nice couple of weeks. Solid for 120.

Steer Clear

BONTEMPELLI v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 93, 101, 164
  • L3 @ MARS: 136, 101, 87

Bont only the ‘steer clear’ to qualify that Bedford probably comes for him. That said, the Dogs risk dropping out of the eight if they lose so expecting a performance of the ages from Bont.

Smoky Pick

MARSHALL v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 118, 88, 79
  • L3 @ MRVL: 146, 126, 126

Will surely chalk up his sixth straight 120+ against Pittonet. Been excellent.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117
  • Round 16: Yeo 64
  • Round 17: Gawn 100
  • Round 18: Cameron 131
  • Round 19: Ryan 99
  • Round 20: Sheezel 160
  • Round 21: Bont 182
  • Round 22: Sheezel 122
  • Round 23: Flanders 120

Verdict

Currently have Flanders into Green but with my season well over I might mix it up. For those still right in it, best bets would be those early named candidates. Good match ups, safe 120s. Dogs Giants and Dockers Port will be high variance.

  1. Some combination of Flanders, Xerri, Neale and Marshall is looking like the plan, but not sure where my preference lies just yet.

  2. Read somewhere today that Bulldogs give up more points to half backs than even the Saints do.

Feel like Whitfield could go big but at the same time the windy and rainy conditions might suit Green more. Tough one.

  3. Thanks GD for the year mate. Your hard work is very much appreciated. Managed to get into a grand final in #2 GB regulars league so hoping I can occupy a spot for next year. All the best to you for a well deserved rest in the off season.

Also my vc this week is Gawn purely because my opponents don’t have him and I need to mix it up. For the captain I’m very tempted by Moore against Roos. Might as well roll the dice. Good luck all.

  4. Well done GD for the season, always a must read.
No problems for with a VC loop with no Sheezel, Houston Curnow and Rachele and maybe English a late out.
Thankfully knockout last week of league finals. Good luck to all finalists and see you in 2025.

  8. Always a great read GD. I’ve gone Daicos into Xerri but I reckon Livingstone might end up my captain
