Captaincy Candidates – Round 3

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 30 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 135, 85, 167 (129 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 76, 198, 96 (123 av.)

A very flat start for Neale but hopefully owners have weathered his lowest scores for the season and he can haul some ass against the Dogs. Goes well against them and should be a ferocious contest with plenty of CPs and scaling to go around. Solid for 120. Bont equally viable.

DAICOS v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 80 (80 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 149, 129, 81 (120 av.)

This kid is cracked. Combines elite use and MG with a healthy K:HB ratio, offensive mindedness and accumulating ability to enormous SC effect. The tags will come but certainly not from the Tigers. Sails to 130.

LDU v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 104, 125, 94 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ UTAS: 94 (94 av.)

Personally a little worried about Maginness but Abs and other Hawks fans have assured me that Maginness wouldn’t be able handle him. Hawks CBAs also look pretty settled. In his explosive form against the Hawks on a small deck, back LDU to maintain the rage for another 130+.

Captaincy Candidates

LAIRD v Port

  • L3 v Port: 133, 93, 119 (115 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 147, 133, 97 (126 av.)

Made a capital return to captaincy calculations last week. Balanced restored. Port tried to spin Drew on him last time but Laird burnt him for 133. Don’t think they go to that well again given its ineffectiveness last year and the fact they just let Daicos freeroll. Back Laird in for 125 against Port’s flashy but flimsy midfield.

MILLER v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 125, 133, 81 (113 av.)
  • L3 @ HBS: 113, 125, 153 (130 av.)

Boxed out of a big one by the Dons’ pressure with his 31 touches, 16 contested and 5 tackles counteracted by 10 clangers and 61% DE as a result of that aforementioned pressure. Should square up and drill the Cats high rotation midfield for 130 at home this week.

SATAN v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 134, 125, 130 (130 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 113, 126, 152 (130 av.)

Underscored in Friday nights disjointed affair with just 135 for 37, 15 contested, 774 MG and a goal but was still at his best. Loves a contest against the Swans, 120 at a minimum per his averages.

Steer Clear

DOCHERTY v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 73, 108, 92 (91 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 108, 92, 110 (103 av.)

Been a popular VC choice in the opening weeks but hasn’t delivered. He’ll eventually have a monster game but probably better to back MIDs in than roll the dice on a HB every week.

Smoky Pick

DUNKLEY v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: N/A
  • L3 @ MRVL: 90, 155, 67 (104 av.)

Ooo, this’ll be good. Lines up against his old team, who are ranked last in the competition for groundball and first quarter tackles – no doubt as a consequence of his departure. Big game with a lot to prove, 125+ on the cards for him.

Verdict

Gave Laird the vindication VC last week and it worked, it’s now Neale’s turn this week. Him into Satan for me, with Laird and Daicos bubbling in the background.

  1. Nice one GD. Start of my year has been underwhelming at best so going for broke this week with a Hail Mary. Daicos VC into big Shrek Darcy against a ruckless Eagles. I’m going to the pies game to watch Daicos weave his magic! 3-0 cmon pies! Good luck all

    1. Some numbers to consider
Darcy is getting 68% of the ruck work (deflated by last weeks madness) and winning 60% of the contests he attends (highest of any ruck) and still not scoring, something NQR going on.

  2. My biggest regret so far is chickening out on my analysis of LDU for Brayshaw, a mistake I will kick myself for until I can correct and get him in.

A completely unrelated Q, is there a bye planner in the works in SCT towers?

    1. The great Macca always had a bye planner for us, but he has put the cue in the rack for this year. Its coloured highlighters instead if you dont have SC Gold.

      1. I have one 90% built based on Macca’s template, happy to share it after I add in this rounds data.
Obviously if that is something people want?

    2. I moved Brayshaw on this week… So you’ll be set now, with my luck he will have him average 130+ from here on.

      1. Me too. Hopper is my only loophole – so I need a VC tonight. Prefer Bont to Dunks. Just a gut feel that Dunks might have a downer tonight.

      2. Yep. Mentioned he was equally viable as Neale, just hard to cram everyone in. Dogs been ass lately, so if they’re bouncing back it’ll be with Bont at the helm.

        BONTEMPELLI v Lions

        L3 v Lions: 108, 116, 138
        L3 @ MRVL: 125, 100, 100

  3. I was thinking Tingles into either Laird or possibly Satan. Bullies might have something to prove, Tim’s been doing ok anyway, and he’s at home. Laird at home against the “flashy but flimsy” mids might go crazy, but I’ll be happy with 125 from tonight’s game, given my own rubbish form.

  4. No much chatter about English… looking like a nice VC having broken 130 in both games (against quality ruck opponents) whilst the dogs have been cack.
    Any thoughts on why no?

    1. Just hard to fit everyone in each week.

English a phenomenal selection. R1 when in full flight (which he currently is) and, of course, a great look for the VC.

      ENGLISH v Lions

      L3 v Lions: 138, 124, 97
      L3 @ MRVL: 139, 88, 86

  5. I’m looking at going Daicos into Witts

Thinking Witts could do well as he wins a lot of the ruck and Suns have actually been getting more clearances than their opponents in matches. Geelong’s midfield hasn’t been performing.
Weather also predicted for a chance of rain and only 24 degrees. Could increase stoppage count

  6. I’m thinking that because we have afew players out now Cotchin might pay Daicos some attention.
Bont into Clarry for me. Cheers

  7. Satan’s average against the Swans is NOT great. Wouldn’t be captaining him against them, especially with no Gawn.

While he did have a stellar QF against them last year, it’s worth noting in 2019 he didn’t ton up in either game against them.

I’d consider with no Gawn, and relying on an out of form Grundy to win the hitouts he’d be a risky proposition against Sydney.

He’s in my team and I’m not taking him as VC or C.

    1. Not sure about this, if we exclude his first 2 years (was establishing himself) his history reads:

      2018: 121
      2019: 87 (33 touches and 8 Clangers) and 92 (30 touches and 4 clangers)
      2020: 130
      2021: 125
      2022: 135 and 173 (QF)

Also Grundy will likely be going up against Ladhams, so I wouldn’t be concerned.

      1. Without Gawn as ruck will also make a big difference. They work very well together.

Grundy *should* easily be able to beat Ladhams, agreed. Ladhams was soundly beaten by Meek and Reeves last week.

Ladhams is not much smaller than McInerney (less than an inch).

But, for all of the extra hitouts against McInerney last week, the Lions absolutely dominated the game until the lights went out (and also Zorko was subbed out), so that the hitout advantage did not have the impact that people expect. Hitout numbers are not a clear sign of team success, and Grundy’s SC score shows that.

Melbourne clawed back a lot of SC points during that junk time.

It will also be interesting to see if Sydney name a run with player or back their own pretty potent midfield.

Best of luck with your choices.

  8. Going Daicos into English. Sorry to those that have this combo, I’ve probably jinxed it now

  9. Daicos into Jelly for me. My god I hope daicos fires because I’m not confident in Jelly what so ever. My side lacks Vc/C options this season.

  10. Wanted to put the C on Laird but my league opponent does too and looks like it’ll be a close one…

    TU: Keep it Laird anyway
TD: Switch to Touk as a POD
