Captaincy Candidates – Round 3

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 18 2020

The first two rounds of captaincy selection have been particularly easy to navigate, with the big fellas (Gawn and Grundy) dominating inexperienced opposition. With form starting to become a factor, this week is a little more challenging.

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MITCHELL v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 124, 149, 128 (132 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 119, 102, 153 (125 av.)

The Tigers tend to pay opposition MIDs little attention and rely of the strength of their own game, so Titch should be free to do his thing. Great record v Tigers, expecting 130.

DUNKLEY v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 169, 87, 77* (111 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 131, 67, 153 (117 av.)

Put an asterisk next the 77 (which was in 2017 when Dunkley was still a pup), otherwise GWS have previously allowed Dunkley to go off the chain by tagging Bont and depriving Macrae of cheap possessions. GWS did run a double tag last week, but Dunkley’s still worth a look for the VC with Bont certain to cop De Boer and Macrae playing off a wing for some reason – can hit 140 if let loose.

GRUNDY v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 144, 109, 113 (122 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 115, 157, 86 (119 av.)

Initially didn’t consider Grundy thinking he’d be double teamed by Marshall and Ryder, but then I noticed Goldy held his own against them in R1. Grundy will just need to match them in hitouts across four quarters to be safe for a serviceable 125.

Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Eagles

With Hutchings not yet returning for the Eagles, Neale should be able to continue his SC rampage. Can conservatively expect a 125 this week.

  • L3 v Eagles: 127, 151, 120 (133 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 171, 103, 85 (120 av.)

GAWN v Essendon

With Bellchambers yet to master the art of jumping vertically, Gawn should be on track for 130 coming off last week’s near double ton.

  • L3 v Essendon: 126, 168, 85 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 119, 99, 134 (117 av.)

FYFE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 108, 129, 75 (104 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 124, 151 (138 av.)

Fyfe put in a huge effort last week and re-affirmed his viability as a captaincy candidate, going from single digits at QT to finish on 143. Decent record against Port, but his hot form should put him on track for 125.

Steer Clear

BONTEMPELLI v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 90, 63, 141 (98 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 94, 76, 99 ( 90 av.)

This section of the article may as well be named “who is playing GWS this week” this week. De Boer has shredded Bont before, will do so again. Sub-ton coming, steer clear!

Smoky Pick

ROWELL v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: N/A
  • L3 v MS: 80, 171 (126 av.)

If I had a loophole option late enough, I would honestly give Rowell a look for the VC. He put up 171 against the Eagles, a dominant premiership side, surely he smashes a Crows team destined for the bottom four. Freakishly good his age, nothing less than 115 this week.

Verdict

I don’t have Fyfe or Titch, so it’s looking like either Dunkley or Neale into Gawn for me. Yourselves?

    1. Completely slipped my mind, Rance. Thought I had him listed a C option. Good catch.

Just checked the data, will replace Cripps with him.

    1. Yeah, not bullish on Grundy either but he’s always worth a mention.

      Neale/Fyfe sounds great, Nateo.

  1. I’m taking Titch as my VC tonight as my loophole options (Xerri/Dusty) play early in the round.

I do have Macrae and Whitfield playing tomorrow night but not bullish about the prospects of either.

    Gawn as skipper if required.

    1. Only possible if you have Dons, Dees, Port or Freo loophole though. As I said, if I could I would, GP!

      1. Got Hibberd from the dons and sturt from freo.
        See how the sides drop.

I’m hoping Hibberd gets a game actually but they won last week so who knows.

    2. It sounds crazy for a 3rd gamer but they’re playing another bottom four side (imagine if Adelaide lose this week … wow). Could just work for you. 2020 is a strange beast afterall.

  2. First game back against w.c ,Rowell was just warming up, getting rid of a few cobwebs.
This week against the crows he should smash it.
Could he be the new set and forget?

      1. Goldy been working out a treat for you and Shaggi, RB. Nicely done. Will be interesting to see if he can keep pace with Gawn and Grundy for a whole season though.

    1. Dunks is temping. He has a history of big scores against the giants due to not getting a tag but with Macrae on the wing, he might cop one this round.

  3. I think playing it safe is Neale into Gawn this week.
There’s just so much difference between a OK score and a monster one.
Looking like a Capt score is 170 this year. Players are putting those scores up regularly so far. Don’t think you can be happy with a sub 150 this season.

  4. I’m set on Fyfe this week so I can roll the dice on Rowell as I have a Melb/bombers loophole.
Let’s see the young fella back up a beauty last week !
