Captaincy Candidates – Round 5

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 13 2023

Flagged the Gather Round in South Australia as a great week for captaincy in the fixture analysis piece. The Adelaide Oval, with it’s smaller proportions and fast deck, produces some of the best midfield scores and has played host to more 180s and double tons on a per game measurement than any other ground. Same deal for the other grounds around the state, they’ll be smaller, in great condition and be easier for players to cover. Packed in a few extra mentions and a double smoky. Strap in. Going to be a sensational weekend of scoring!

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAWSON v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 126, 134, 96 (119 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 173, 114, 110 (132 av.)

Very much a last week’s points VC call but one I’ve slotted in to spare the inquiries. Blues a dense match up, granted, but Dawson coming off an OB role and a sensational fortnight. Nice numbers, solid for 120. Laird and Cripps also tenable if you don’t have Dawson.

DARCY v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 51, 140, 54 (82 av.)
  • L3 @ NO: N/A (N/A)

Witts confirmed NOT to play catapults Darcy into consideration. 120+ just on having no ruck opponent. Also, Miller could get a look from Aish but he seems more adept at handling smaller frame MIDs. Been exceptional with is CP and tackling work and also don’t mind him at all this week.

LDU v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 90, 86, 114 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ AH: N/A (N/A)

Gave LDU the Steer Clear last week. After a soft, fed start he faded and landed on a flat ton as expected. While they’ll trounce North, the Lions midfield has been quite poor lately. Got demolished at clearance last week, which they’re somehow 1st in the competition for, and overall are 18th for disposals and 13th for contested possessions. So win first use and bleed ball. Should be nice for LDU 120.

Were the Lions not 18th and 13th in those respective numbers, I’d have given Neale and Dunks shouts in their own rights. Just been flat and non-contributors outside of CB/stoppage. Suppose they both still ton.

Captaincy Candidates

SATAN v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 146, 105, 112 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 176, 68, 118 (121 av.)

Going about it exactly as those who paid up would have wanted. Dons are a delicious match up and the Adelaide Oval is Satan’s SC dojo. A must VC, sails to 140.

BONTEMPELLI v Port

  • L3 v Port: 67, 128, 114 (103 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 128, 161, 114 (134 av.)

Right on the precipice of having a large one. Over the last fortnight DE and match conditions have hurt him but Port’s midfield is still soft, Bont rocks out in SA and think the proportions of AO will be huge for getting his clearing kicks counted as effective as he’ll be able to launch I50 off a few steps. Solid for 130

ENGLISH v Port

  • L3 v Port: 49, 93, 71 (71 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 103, 93, 71 (89 av.)

Just keeping riding this wave. He’s doing 139.3 currently and Lycett played just the 66% TOG last week batting to a young midfield and making Ladhams look…decent. Another 140 this week.

Steer Clear

DAICOS v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 98 (98 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 163 (163 av.)

It’s a Steer Clear and not a Steer Clear. On paper, Ross, Enright and the Saints absolutely look for a negating role on Daicos. In terms of player and panel personnel, they’re the team to do it. That said, many (myself definitely included) expected Berry to go to him last week away from home and he just slayed his way to a 150. Personally think he gets a look but even then his versatility, talent and speed probably means he can still finagle his way to a 120. Also casually did a 163 in his only game at AO in his debut year because of course he did!

Smoky Pick

GREEN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 97, 71 (84 av.)
  • L3 @ NO: N/A (N/A)

34 touches, 17 contested and huge performance counteracted last week by 58% DE and 8 clangers as Green was left unabetted against a ferocious but unclean Dons side. Squares the Hawks up for 120+ this week, especially without Day.

MARSHALL v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 124, 100, 81 (102 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 89, 132, 74 (98 av.)

The sub was very frustrating and probably is a little concerning but will redeem himself against a ruckless Pies this week. 43 HO for McInerney last week, so give RoMo that plus his around the ground work and we’re talking 130.

Verdict

Satan into Tingles for me, very comfortably.

  1. A big welcome to recruit Miller, and good luck with the v. If no good, Clarry is there to back you up.

    1. Yeah, gave him a shout last week and he delivered. Been excellent, relishing that #1 solo ruck role.

Should go well v Dons, although Draper and Phillips clamp down more than expected. Depends on who you have but would be going MIDs ahead of him this week tbh.

Up to you though, good luck!

  2. Nice!
    Thanks GD.

I like Oliver into Bont but considering laird into Oliver due to the predicted inclement weather.
    Thoughts?

    1. I don’t usually look into the weather, Tinka, but get why Bont in the wet would scare you lol. Hmm. Blues midfield quite dense, that’s the only asterisk with Laird. He was very good while tagged last week though.

I’d probably have Bont slightly ahead of Laird, just on opposition? Argh.

      It’s a tough one.

      1. Thanks gd. I just flipped a coin literally and it came up Laird into Oliver. Let’s see how it goes. Cheers emoji

  3. Great stuff GD.’

So much to consider this week. I have traded in Touk and I think I will VC him with Freo looking cooked and the Suns playing on a small Norwood oval. Even without Witts I think he is ready to explode. As a Dawson owner I think he will cop some attention and I don’t trust Laird as his TOG was ~70% last week so I’m worried he is carrying something.

I’m also not so confident on Clarry this week. His past averages V the Bombers were without Setterfield. The Dons got him in to do a Job on the “Big Mids’ and I think he can cap his ceiling a bit. ( I’m trading Setters to Touk as I feel he will be more accountable to Oliver like he did with Green last week. )

English is my fall back. He just finds ways to score and should murder Lycett. Green should show his ceiling this week V the Hawks but I’m happy to go with more proven options.

Thanks mate and good luck this weekend.

I will give you a call later when teams are announced. Yew !

    1. Yeah, kinda put Dawson in so I wouldn’t get questions/roasted in the comments after his 170. Nice job having him btw.

Setterfield totally gassed, was at the game last week dead center Level 2 with good eyes on him. Satan will murder him, if at all he gives him a look.

And, yeah, with Tingles as C I’m super chill.

      I’ll ttyl, yep!

  4. So GD,
Any goss on Witts- what’s the injury? Was supposed to be just general soreness and straight back.

    1. Stuart Dew on Jarrod Witts.

“It’s one of those things that’s hard to put a timeline on,”

“He’s been a bit sore all year and it’s just managing that.
“Some games he’s felt really good, and other games he’s worked really hard to get through.

“We were just trying to get a bit of a circuit-breaker last week, give him that week off and see what impact that had on him.

“We anticipate when we bring him back in, he’s at a really good level and not as sore as he has been.”
“We know it’s a long year … we won’t risk him.”

Dew said having last week’s debutant Ned Moyle available made any decision to rest Witts much easier.

      1. Thanks Chaos T- certainly been a year for RUCK CHAOS! Last week I traded in Moyle late to stop getting a donut with Witts- looks like he’s main ruck again.
Actually reasonably happy with his game & score last week- hope he can monster it this week!

      2. Cheers, GD. I’m twitchy AF this season. Already copped a donut from Witts last week and this has me worried that he may require further managing this year.
Witts to Tingles an overreaction? RoMo at R2

        TU: Keep the faith.
        TD: Fire away.

    1. I’m having to vc Millar as I’ve only 2 non scorers on my bench and they both play Friday, at least he has the early game, good luck, and I reckon Millar could go big.

    1. Ask any Richmond fan and they will reluctantly admit…’Dustin Martin is actually short for Dustin Martingles’
For everyone else it’s Timothy English.

  5. Phew…..nearly putt the v on Cripps. So….

    T/u Touk into Satan

T/d Satan into Bont (need to be quick)

  6. Don’t want to be greedy, I put the VC on Dawson who ended on 152 and have Satan as Captain.

    TU – keep Dawson’s score
TD – run the risk on Satan going big against the Dons

  7. Didn’t VC any Crom boys last night oops! (Keep stuffing up my Captains this year!)

English into Marshall at this stage will take 120

  8. My question as well. Usually I go with 120 plus as the bar but 115 if you think you can win your league game. For OR I would go for English.
