Game Chat – Brisbane v Collingwood

Written by Motts on April 1 2021

Where and when: Marvel, 6:40pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: R15 2020: Brisbane 6.6 (42) DEF Collingwood 5.4 (34)

Following a season of wayward kicking, the Lions started poorly again, with three misses from long distance early on. They steadied though and slammed on five goals to one in the second quarter to open up an 18-point half-time cushion. Jarryd Lyons (27 disposals and seven clearances) was magnificent for the victors, as was young midfielder Jarrod Berry (24). Despite Brisbane’s suffocating pressure, Collingwood would not relent, surging back from 26 points down midway through the third quarter.

Match Preview: The Lions were the main benefactors of COVID last year with much of the season being relocated to Brisbane. Now with the outbreaks up in Queensland, they’re on the other end of the stick having to stay an extra week in Melbourne before taking on the up-and-about Pies after a 6 day break. I think that break from normality is going to be a huge factor in this game and combined with the home crowd support, have tipped accordingly.

Motts Watch:

Brisbane
No player has had a bigger drop off in points per game compared to 2020 than Lachie Neale (58). His inability to cop a tag has frustrated thousands of his owners who jumped off this week before a big price drop. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on him because I reckon the Pies will throw Levi Greenwood at him. Want to see Sharp do something to justify his spot in The Maulers. And am interested to see how Joe Daniher goes. After his 4 goals in the preseason I was pretty keen on him before waking up to myself and the rule regarding Key Position Players.

Collingwood
I’m expecting another big Thursday night showing from Grundy who I’ll be VC’ing again. Coming up against the rookie Fullarton he should easily get 120.

Mottsy’s Tip: Collingwood by 10 (current tipping record 5 from 6)

  1. Happy April fools day, Motts.
Your early prediction of Collingwood throwing Greenwood at Neale won’t happen as they threw him under the bus instead. Greenwood is out.
Also Sharp is blunted this week. Another out.
Good luck with your VC. I am backing you on that one.

        1. yeah mate – i figured that out and checked the teams quickly! Would have been a nice solution for those considering ditching Neale!

    1. In the tipping comps I’m in that tell me this stuff, most people are backing Brisbane. But the bookmakers have the Pies as favourites. This might suggest that the greater volume of bets is actually on Brisbane, but that there has been big money (i.e. large bets) backing Collingwood.

    2. Agreed on the odds. I’ve backed lions win doubled with Neale 35 plus ($6.80). The champ to bounce back.

      1. Will be floored if Neale gets 35, Damo. Underdone and a chance he gets tag.

For the sake of your punt and my ownership of him, let’s hope I’m wrong lol.

        1. Yeah well hope is the key word here. 🙂
          As usual with the punt.
And I also have him in SC. On deciding to hold I decided to back that decision with a bet. All in on the Brownlow medallist.

    1. “I don’t think we’ll target him tonight.”
“He’ll get some attention from us, but it’ll be a team effort. He’s an elite player.” – Bucks on tagging Lachie Neale

      2

      1. Bucks is a fool then.

Neale doesn’t appear to have anyone with a hard tag and CD already giving Neale some favourable scores on some questionable disposals as being “on target”.
He’s missed some balls and his kicks weren’t 40+ metres and not to a target – yet they have been scored that way already. CD resetting the board already on him with so many trading him out …

For pies to not tag him is basically irresponsible … IMHO …

        1. Sounds like someone who traded Neale out… gotta admit it was a coin toss for me. Glad I chose to stick with him tho!

          3

          5
          1. no – same complaints about the way CD score.

His first two kicks went to no-one and were not correct disposals under their definitions … in order to be potentially scored as a plus for him then they have to travel more than 40 metres – they did not and were not to team mates – yet he was awarded as effective kicks which is plus four for each – most other players would have received minus 4

            That’s the annoying thing …

            6

            1
            1. Yeah I don’t disagree with you Macca. I often feel that way about some players, particularly in the early rounds. Dunkley is one I feel who often isn’t awarded points he probably should be. Definitely a subjective element to CD scoring…

              7

              0
            2. Couldn’t agree more Macca. In first half Pendles had more possies and clean disposals, but half of Neale’s points…. And even though I’m happy with Grundy’s score still believe he was robbed in second half.

              2

              1
  3. Grundy 57
    Neale 41
Great start from those 2. Would love to see Neale keep that up just to get a reaction from coaches that traded him out

    6

    3
    1. As one who kept Neale, it’s still too early to ease the nerves for me! I need another 3 quarters of this please!

      4

      0
  4. Grundy should go 200 if this keeps up – he’s winning basically every tap and basically every one is going to a team mate – he’s being badly underscored at the moment – as with those taps being +5 plus his other stats, he should easily be over 100!

    6

    1
  5. and again – Neale incorrect disposals for a kick towards the end there and about 2 minutes before that with a handball … and under their scoring rules, both should have been minus 4 scores, and both times his score went up (but his DE went down)

    very blatant tonight …

    7

    2
      1. no TrooRoo I know exactly how the system works and exactly how it should work.

You can quote and try and match up any of the stats that are put down as recorded – and you will basically get what the player scored – on paper.

Its completely different when you actually watch the game and what is or isn’t recorded. And if you watch the match and the live scoring and hit refresh, it updates pretty much straight away …

        4

        1
          1. look at the first few minutes and the first quarter for a start mate – Neale was scored at 100% in first quarter and by their rules, his first kicks should not have scored points, but lost them … then come back to me …

            0

            0
            1. You’re right. That’s the subjective part Neale has a 41-37m kick to a contest. It’s really 50/50 but was counted as effective. It’s not like he was scored Incorrexrly. He was allocated the right amount of points for a touch and go decision. They don’t have the luxury of a tape measure lol

              1

              0
              1. just re-watched the entire first quarter – noted the minute / second of each time he was anywhere near it.

He should have got no more than 20 points, maybe less for that quarter, if the calls he was “given” were actually and correctly taken away. He had two free kicks, 1 goal and a free 10M kick in defence at the end that were the only ones that could have and should have scored correctly.

He was awarded contested possessions that were non existent, handballs that were not to anyone and even scored for an iffy kick that went up in the air 5m, but was actually a free kick given to one of the pies – 11 minutes in.

His incorrect and 50-50 disposals should not have scored anything – they never travelled more than 40M which is their first pre-requisite, and in actual fact lost points, by their scoring system – as happens to other players.

Now, whether or not they evened it all up as the match went on … who knows … but there is no way he could have been on 41 points in that first quarter … again, at least by their systems and by watching everything.

I can list every involvement and what happened in that first quarter … but I dont need to … I only make a comment on the site when I can back up what I say.

In the end, perhaps they evened him up as the game progressed … and another problem with their system is the scaling that they award … it’s all so subjective and easily able to be “massaged”, when it shouldn’t be … anyways … its too late now and I’m too tired.

                3

                0
    1. You might be ok yet Joey. I held Neale, but after watching that 3rd quarter I’m still nervous he won’t crack the ton…

      3

      2
  6. Well this is the problem , Neale a little like Mitchell , they dont really hurt you , when heavily checked, WTF Buckley you are pigheaded and you must at least buckle ffs

    4

    3
  7. Controversial: But, I’m watching this and Neale should not be scoring so much. And Grundy should be more. I feel like someone is match fixing, somewhere, somehow. You can bet on supercoach scores etc. just frustrated watching blatant mis scoring.

    1. I don’t think it’s as bad as all that tbh – he’s only high 80s at 3/4 time. 5 tackles, 6 clearances and a goal from outside 50 to go with his 19 possessions. At least two frees for I’ve seen too. Some of his disposals may not have been perfect but they weren’t changers or turnovers either…

      5

      5
  8. The Pies have 2 free kicks resulting in goals for ‘arms around’ by the defender – it looks like Charlie Cameron can barely move for being held. Is the rule only for tall forwards?

    2

  9. Serious observation… Has anyone else thought why Sidebottoms head is so white???

I’ve never seen a cranium that doesn’t blend into someones face like Steeles

  10. Unbelievable stuff here atm. 5 to go in last quarter and hit out count is 60-4 and hit outs to advantage 22-1

  11. Another brilliant one half of footy from Lachie Neale… FML

On the plus side, at least Collingwood lost… what a heartbreaker!

  12. Bailey with the goal!!!! But I had Collingwood to win nooooooo!!!
    Yesss!!!! Nooooo!!!!
    What to celebrate?????

    7

  13. Be interesting to see if they change the scores to give points to Bailey – was on 72 before the goal … is only on 74 ATM … thought they held points or awarded them in large amounts to a player who does exactly what he just did …

    8

    0
      1. still on 74 ATM – I keep hitting refresh … expecting it to change – he got 2 points thus far for that last play …

        2

        1
        1. If he doesn’t get any benefit, I’ll just think back to last week where he made the tackle and wasn’t rewarded to kick the winning goal. It will be no one likes him and justs want to be as harsh as they can to him

          2

          1
          1. looks like scores are locked in – he’s still on 74 unless there is a later change that flows through into the live scores …

CD really sh– me with how they score and what they do. It really ruins what could be a totally great system … and especially if you sit and watch the match and the live scores as they happen …. gets disheartening at times … as you place a lot of faith in their ‘honesty’ and accurateness and week in and week out its not there.

And again, I’m not talking about the scores as they appear in their official tallies … it’s what is and isn’t scored accurately that is the true scores … you can make it add up by recording things inaccurately …

Sorry folks … I’m a bean counter by trade – ethics is my fundamental “must be” principle …

AND just refreshed again – Bailey now up to 88

            6

            1
            1. Grundy ended up up with a good score, but there was a stage when he was on about 125 he had about 5 possessions and a couple of hitouts and his score didn’t change??

              2

              0
        2. On fan footy at end of game, bailey was 74 and points allocated were 3300, a couple of mins ago total points were 3270 and things got updated.

          2

          0
          1. Think he finished 88 from that. He just needs a Brisbane ruck to help him get more of the ball at his CBA since he was there a fair bit

            4

            0
      1. If zero time on field then will be a 0 for Supercoach and count as DNP so no effect on scores/value

        1

        0
      1. This is R3. Every step must be planned. Bringing in a player just to collect a captain score is crazy

        3

        0
    1. big time. Based on what he should have been given as to hits to advantage, let alone any of his other hitouts, and based purely on the other stats he has accumulated, he should have gone over 200 easily …

      6

      2
    1. Eventually.

But now you’ll be $70k out of pocket if you move him on. Neither fish nor fowl.

If you believed that you shouldn’t trade him before round 3, what has changed?

      2

      2
    1. It actually wasn’t that hard to predict.

Grundy taking on a couple of kids.
He beats up on seasoned pro’s.
After his 136 last week v Pittonet. It was pretty easy to see him go huge this week. I think he deserved at least 176 !

      On Neale.

A few things bothered me about him in the first couple of games. He just didn’t have his normal zip from contest to contest.
I think the tag just hid the real issue. Which was he was hampered by something pre season. That never really went away.

He is usually an accumulator like Mitchell. Running off into space and using slick hands and pin point passes to set up his team.
This just hasn’t been happening. He showed a bit in the first half, I think he was going on pure will. He is a champ and will certainly bounce back when fit. I just couldn’t wait that long.

I bit the bullet and traded him to Brayshaw.

I was a little worried at half time.
I feel pretty happy about it now.

  14. The good thing about this round is Gawn is up against Flynn and the Bont could go large. The 52% nonGrundy owners still have the chance to catch up

    2

    1
  15. Grundy was always going to go bang tonight!! No Mccinerny meant pain for non- owners. Easiest vice -captain decision of the year i reckon.

    11

  16. How accountable are CD..watching that game it looked like Grundy was underscored by at least 30 to 40 points..

Does anyone sanity check the scorers? I mean bias is common conscious or unconscious..surely when they hold the integrity of the sport they should be called out when a score is so clearly wrong?

    4

    1
    1. It’s their trainset and their monkeys, but not their prizemoney or website

I guess if NewsCorp’s footy reporters kicked up a stink something could be done

      1

      2
      1. I rhink we often see SuperCoach and Champion Data as the same but you’re right, they are separate entities.

        2

        0
  17. Going back over the game and looking at Grundy’s score, I feel it is what it should be as seeing stats of him to have 54 of 63 hitouts to Lions 4 hitouts.
Looking at the clearances it was 35 – 30 with 11 – 13 centre clearances. So a minimum of 17 Brisbane clearances came from a Grundy tap assuming a tap occurred at every stoppage, which would mean a lot of sharked taps occurred. This would then lose points and then having 60% DE with 3 frees against and a few turnovers in a close game could be exaggerated in points lost
