Game Chat – GWS vs Melbourne

Written by Thommo on September 12 2020

Where and When: GABBA, Saturday 12 September at 7:40pm AEST

Last time they met: Rd 10, 2019: GWS 14.10 (94) def Melbourne 10.8 (68) at the MCG.

Match Preview: In recent weeks, it seems like nobody wants to take the final spot in the top 8. Well now Melbourne and GWS have no choice; one of them has to win today!

The Giants have gone with the “swing the axe” approach this week, even dropping Captain Coniglio to attempt to get a response from the players. Conversely, the Dees have gone with the “trust the system” approach in the hope they will recall how to play footy before the season ends.

While this may game may not reach great heights, it is going to be entertaining!

Supercoach Watch: GWS: Josh Kelly and Williams are back for those that held. Condolences if you have Coniglio – it’s been a shocking year! Haynes and Whitfield are in plenty of sides.

Melbourne: While the Dees haven’t had a great season, Oliver, Petracca and Gawn have been handy on the whole as has late-season acquisition, Stevie May. Viney has been frustrating but repaid some faith last week.

Thommo Watch: Go Vice-Captain Gawn!

Thommo’s Tip: A draw! Is that not fitting?

  1. Of course Mumford getting involved in another incident. Oliver copping a big hit from Mumford in a tackle. Hope he can get up from it

  2. What the actual f*ck. Mumford just Donkey Kong punching with impunity. Such a useless, untalented brute of a player.

  3. Once again Mumford goes for the spoil and collects Gawn in the back of the head. Gladly he got up with no issue, but that could of been massive

  4. Zac Williams to kick 2 goals so far tonight? They threw him out of defence as a half forward tonight??? Are these due to that or just coincidental?

  5. Can say Tom Green has had a great night so far. Replaced Coniglio perfectly leading most possessions in the game with Kelly during the 3rd quarter

      1. 78 points in last quarter … with any scaling to come … scoring is just BS … no doubt some will give me TD’s but I’ve proven enough this year and other years that there is some serious questionable scoring from CD and the 3300 total points is ridiculous.

Just score what players get or lose, based on the points each way and you have a completely open transparent system … the way it is now its so subjective and clear favourites being scored. The same applies to this “unknown”or unseen scores that they dont show us … anyway, rant over … but for Gawn, with 33 HO’s at 3 qtr time and only on 82 points was just rubbish. Even if only half of them effective, they are scored at 5 each … so that’s 80 points alone for those …

There may have been a lot of catchups or missed scores applied to him in that last quarter maybe … its just frustrating to watch though

        1. I was expecting to see a low score of about 110 considering what he was at 3/4 time. It is really confusing to see him almost double his score, where other players didn’t get the same scaling when they did some influential things.

            1. 57% DE and 10 turnovers killed him. Was leading the disposals.

Look at Gawn with 47% DE and 6 turnovers.
Petracca 41% DE and 6 turnovers.
They were just as inefficient but CPs helped them

  6. Suck it Leon Cameron. You and your club got what you deserved. Saying that i got what i deserved for the SuperCoach players i picked this year. Never will i not pick Gawn again.

    1. Tom and Hazza – well done to have another non playing defender still to swap

The answer to your questions will depend on whether you are playing for leagues or overall.

If leagues, match your opponent players if ahead / on par … if behind, swap the one your opponent doesn’t have.

If OA – Doc is high owned … so you either play him and bench the lower owned player … or hope that all the others that own Doc are in a position to bench him and bench him too …

      either way, gut call!!

      1. Cheers Macca! Gould has been a handy loophole option all season Too bad I cant bench Haynes instead. Currently projected to lose by 68 because of it.
I’m definitely focusing more on league than OA.
My opponent has neither of Crisp or Docherty. And he’ll probably bench Maynard in order to get River’s score as well.
If you were in my position who would you choose?

        1. Ahhh mate tough call!! Crisp is averaging slightly better on 3rnd and 5rnd than Doc … both averaging about the same for the year.

It depends which one will see more of the pill, and based on both their opponents, you would think both will get less than normal involvements (ie you would think both Crows and Suns not getting as many attacking opps against them ) … that said, Crows have been getting better lately too …

Toss of the coin … probably have to think if Doc is carrying that injury it’s safer to bench him …

          But go with gut mate!!

Same for you Tom… tough call, but probably safer to bench Doc …

But again gents … take on board all opinions, do your own research and then make your own call!! Its more luck than anything else this game!!

          1. Very, very tough call. I’d be benching Docherty in a heart beat if it wasnt for the Pies ins this week.
Crisp has had to 2 very high scores with the absence of Treloar and Sidebottom in the midfield. But with Treloar and De Goey named to play this week, surely that means his midfield time is restricted?
I’ll have to sleep on it and decide tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!
