Injuries – Week 5

ADELAIDE

Izak Rankine

“I don’t know as yet (if Izak will play), we don’t really get a chance to train this week unfortunately, but we’ll have a Captains’ Run tomorrow which we would like to see him get involved in, but we’ll just see how he pulls up” Nicks said.

“He got a knock to the calf, there’s some bleeding there but there’s no muscle damage, so it’s one we just need to be mindful of.

“The speeds that he gets up to it does put some pressure on that calf, so the last thing we want is to lose him for a month or so.

Matt Crouch

“We did (rest Crouch with an eye to play him this week), that gave him a slightly longer break and he’s pulled up quite well from that and it’s another decision we’ll have to make tomorrow,” Nicks said.

Luke Jackson will miss the next two to three weeks after suffering a low-grade hamstring injury. “Luke has sustained a hamstring injury which will see him miss anywhere up to three games,”

Corey Wagner

“It’s still just calf awareness (for Wagner),” Merriman said.

“He will likely miss this week and return the following week.”

Nat Fyfe will be a test to play after not featuring at any level of football over the weekend due to knee soreness.

“He’s (Fyfe) looking good. He trained out here today, and he will be available for selection this week with all going to plan on Thursday,” Merriman said.

Sam Switkowski could also make his return, provided he progresses through main training later in the week after spending three weeks on the sidelines with a groin injury.

“He (Switkowski) was very close last week actually,” Merriman said.

“He is going to be a test to play with all going to plan and will be available for selection,” Merriman said.

Sam Sturt has undergone a knee arthroscope today (Tuesday) for a knock he received at training last month, with the forward expected to miss the next six to eight weeks.

Scans revealed he had suffered the stress fracture in the navicular bone of his foot, with the 23-year-old to undergo surgery in the coming days.

James Blanck (knee) – test

“He’s going to play some minutes. There’s a VFL practice match this weekend, there’s no official VFL game. He’ll play some game time in that which is exciting, his first game in over 12 months. He’s been fully training now for at least three to four weeks so he’s ready to go. He’ll play some managed minutes and then we’ll progress his match minutes in the next couple of weeks. He’s really excited. He’s trained amazingly well the past couple of weeks and had a great session last Saturday so it’s really exciting.”

Sam Butler (leg) – test

“He’s had the same preparation as James with full match practice last Saturday. He’s fully trained for the last two weeks. We’re just on managed minutes to start with then we’ll progress those over the coming weeks, providing he pulls up well. It’s really exciting for Sam.”

Connor Macdonald (ankle) – test

“He’s made some significant progression in the last week. He had a fantastic running session on the weekend and again, yesterday. He’s going to run again tomorrow and we’ll look to put him in some drills on Friday. Then we’ll make a further assessment to his availability after Friday’s full training session.”

James Worpel (ankle) – test

“He’s tracking really well. He fully trained today, he’ll fully train again on Friday and then we’ll make a final call on his availability as well for this weekend, but it’s looking promising.”

Calsher Dear (back) – 2 weeks

“Some exciting news, we’ve now put a timeline on his return. We’re looking at AFL Round 7 but through the VFL on some managed game time. He’ll miss two more games and start to fully train next week, get two full weeks of training into that VFL game at Round 7 and then progress his game time from there. It’s good to have a solidified timeline now. His scan last week was very, very good so we actually now can progress his football exposure, which we already started but now we can go to full football training.”

Mitch Lewis (knee) – 8-10 weeks

“Through consultation with our medical team and sitting down with Mitch, we’ve now put a timeline on his return, so AFL Round 13, but through the VFL is the targeted date at this stage and again, that wouldn’t be a full game to start with. As I said last week, there’s a certain period of time that we just need to spend with Mitch with the injury he’s had and the graft. He’s actually started some training with the group. He did a drill with us on Saturday, albeit no contact, he did a little bit more today but we’re going to just slowly progress his training and by that time, he’ll make his return and have plenty of training under his belt.”

Will Day (foot) – 3-4 months

“Yeah, it’s really disappointing for Will, for the club and Will, more importantly. He has a stress fracture in his navicular. We’ve just had a bye and a four-day break and he came back off the break reporting some awareness in his foot. Naturally, we reacted to that, given some history. We went and had some scans and the news isn’t great. He’s going to miss a significant period of time. He’s going to have some surgery tonight, there’s some things there that we need to have a look at and get cleaned up that will hopefully prevent this sort of thing happening again in the future. We’ll have some more news on that after the surgery’s done and in the coming weeks.”

MELBOURNE

Jake Lever will undergo surgery on his ankle, sidelining him for up to eight weeks.

“As part of our management process, we sought some expert opinions. He saw a surgeon today and, unfortunately for Jake, he will now undergo surgical intervention and he’ll likely be out for approximately eight weeks.”

Xavier Lindsay Test

Tom Campbell minor hamstring injury.  2-3 weeks

Koltyn Tholstrup and Luker Kentfield, the two have completed their extended rehab schedules and are now available for selection this week.

Judd McVee “Judd integrated back into most of training last week and he’ll full train this week, with the plan for him to be available ahead of Round 6.”

“Josh is looking really good after that game. We’re all excited to see him back out there,”

Hugo Ralphsmith also made his return via the VFL.

“Hugo’s GPS numbers were through the roof. It was a really good demonstration from him to say that he’s ready to go. Hopefully this weekend he’s another discussion at the selection table,”

Liam Fawcett Concussion, Test

“Liam’s protocol today was to get through some training with modified contact. He got through that successfully.

“He’ll have a day off tomorrow and then we’ll go full contact training Wednesday.

“Provided he gets through that without any headaches or symptoms, we’ll get him available for selection this weekend.”

Kane McAuliffe Foot, 1-2 weeks

“Kane presented to training a couple of days ago with some soreness in his foot. We took a precautionary approach. We sought expert opinion from inside and outside the Club.

“What we’ve found in the last little while is that he’s responded to a little bit of downtime.

“Whilst we’ll rest him this week, he’ll probably be available for selection the following week, in the week we play Gold Coast.”

Rhyan Mansell Shoulder, 2-3 weeks

“Rhyan sustained a shoulder injury back in our game against Port Adelaide. Obviously he put in a mountain of work the week after and got himself up for the game against St Kilda.

“Unfortunately, he re-injured his shoulder then (against St Kilda). We’d always made a decision that we were going to jab his shoulder the following week (Round 4), to put him in a good position and give him a bit of downtime.

“He’s progressing quite well and will be available for selection once he serves his ban.”

Dion Prestia Achilles, 3-4 weeks

“Dion’s still going through (rehab). No real progression on him.

“He’s probably going to go through more of a plateau at the moment, until we can see that he’s progressing well.

    • I was hoping to hold him because he’s been so good, but 4+ weeks is too long to hold (especially because we do have some downgrade options coming through).
