Carlton: Tom De Koning will miss the remainder of the home and away season with a fractured foot, while he also has a collapsed lung.
De Koning underwent scans on Monday morning that discovered a fractured foot.
He has also been hospitalised with a collapsed lung, sustained late in the game, following an otherwise innocuous behind-play incident with Tristan Xerri.
Essendon: Jye Caldwell who was subbed out in the fourth quarter.
“He’s fine. There’s 15 minutes left on the clock. The rules are there for a reason and for a good reason. He had to have a head injury assessment which takes time. The fact that he passed that and was fine is cold comfort because we just couldn’t wait.
“Obviously we didn’t want to sub him off but we felt like we had no choice. Just the stage of the game, we might’ve got him back for the last 5 minutes but we just made that call.”
Adelaide: Jordan Dawson was out late in the game due to concussion after a knock earlier in the contest.
Matthew Nicks said: “I don’t actually know the incident that happened… we basically get the message upstairs at a point sometime through the last quarter that Jordan’s gone off and he won’t be able to come back on.
“Unfortunately I believe he’s in the protocols now, which means he won’t be available next week. Really, it’s his health that’s most important.”
Rory Laird was also compromised but played out the game.
Nicks said: “I think it was more just a cork. I think it was maybe a corkie through the quad. He then found it hard to push off. He wanted to stay out on the ground knowing we were a few men down.”
Melbourne: Max Gawn on track to return from his ankle injury this weekend. The skipper won’t do much running until Wednesday, at the club’s main session. Day off today and gym work tomorrow.
Carlton: Sam Walsh. Club is confident that he will be available, having left the game feeling discomfort in his back following a heavy knock in the dying stages of the win over North Melbourne.
Collingwood: Nathan Kreuger was subbed out after a head clash and has entered concussion protocols.
Craig McRae said: “Yep, Kreugs will be out, we’ll wait and see how long it takes him to get through the protocol. It’s unfortunate, he’ll miss at least 14 days.”
“I’m not sure what that looks like. We’re managing him now at training. Within games we play him in different roles and put him in places we think he can impact… I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves.”
Port Adelaide: Connor Rozee had a hip concern that saw him benched late.
“Yeah he got a whack on the hip. Pretty normal footy injuries unfortunately. He’ll be fine. He’ll recover. We didn’t put him back on because we didn’t need to. We manage him well, get him ready for next week he’ll be fine I would imagine for next week.”
Adem Yze said: “We subbed him out. He was going down for a concussion test for 15 minutes. That took about half the last quarter anyway. We decided to sub him. I don’t know the results of that right now, but I think he’ll most likely go into concussion protocols.”
Scans have revealed a new fracture to the radius bone in his left forearm.
“Our medical team will now consult specialists to consider the best intervention in collaboration with Alex and we will then have a better understanding of Alex’s return to play timeline.”
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin won’t front his weekly press conference tomorrow as he battles an infection. The Demons still expect him to coach against GWS on Saturday night
Melbourne HP manager Selwyn Griffith: “Following us returning to Melbourne, he had some delayed symptoms with headaches & altered vision & has now entered the concussion protocol.”
The AFL has found Carlton breached concussion protocols in its handling of Harry McKay after his head knock during Sunday’s game.
Carlton have been issued with an official reprimand for the “short delay” in removing McKay from the field and conducting a SCAT6 assessment.
Adelaide have been cleared of any breach of protocols in its management of Dawson, who copped a knock just before three-quarter time of the win against Essendon. No notification was issued by ARC medical spotters, and the club conducted a head injury assessment on Dawson during the three-quarter time break, before the Adelaide captain returned to the field.
Dawson played out the game before being placed into concussion protocols on Monday after reporting symptoms.
AFL have issued a “please explain” to Brisbane over their handling of Harris Andrews
Andrews played out the game against Sydney and was placed into concussion protocols on Monday after also reporting symptoms.
The League’s investigation into the Lions’ management of Andrews is still continuing.
From round 20 onwards, all club general managers of football will receive notifications sent by the ARC medical spotters to bring players from the field for a mandatory assessment.
To date, only club doctors have received the notifications but football GMs will now be able to direct a club doctor or other appropriate official to bring a player from the field, to reduce delays in assessing players who have suffered a head knock.
The AFL reiterated that it would review concussion management protocols at the end of the year, including the possibility of adding independent doctors at all games.
“There is no bigger priority than the health and safety of all players. We will continue to ensure our AFL and AFLW Concussion protocols are followed,” AFL general counsel Stephen Meade said.
“We want to acknowledge the cooperation from all three clubs, and their shared view that player care is, at all times the priority.
“The updated process of informing the club GM Football will assist with the priority management on concussion care when the doctors are potentially managing other players at the time.
“The AFL will work with the respective medical experts at the end of the season on the continued updating of the AFL and AFLW concussion guidelines.
“In the meantime, it is incredibly important that clubs reiterate to their players that they must comply with club doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and runners who direct them to leave the field for assessment.”
I fully agree with some coaches that have spoken about abolishing Subs and having a bench of 5 players.
Players suspected of concussion could be taken from the field promptly and assessed as necessary without the gamble of subbing a player who could pass protocols and returning to game. Nor having a fully fit player sitting on the bench waiting until the player who is suspect to pass or fail their concussion test.
Common sense please prevail.
The AFL wishes to provide an update in relation to its investigation of the management of Harris Andrews of the Brisbane Lions under the AFL & AFLW Concussion Guidelines during Round 19.
The ARC Medical Spotters issued a mandatory off-field assessment (including SCAT6) notification to Brisbane in relation to the 3rd quarter incident involving Andrews. There was a delay in Brisbane actioning the notification from the ARC with Andrews being removed during the last quarter of the match for a SCAT6 which did not identify signs of concussion and he returned to the field. Andrews was subsequently concussed in a separate incident late in the 4th quarter of the match.
Having considered Brisbane’s submissions in relation to the management of Andrews on Sunday afternoon, the AFL has determined that the club was in breach of the AFL Concussion Protocols and have sanctioned the club $40,000.
The sanction takes into account the $10,000 suspended sanction from the previous breach by Brisbane in the 2023 NAB AFLW Grand Final, a $20,000 fine to be paid immediately (and to be included in the Soft Cap), and a $10,000 fine suspended and only payable if there is another breach in either AFL or AFLW prior to the end of the 2025.
Brisbane’s submissions described the circumstances in which the message from the ARC was missed as Brisbane’s doctors were occupied in attending to players, including Andrews, over the 3Q time break, and in the period that followed. Whilst the AFL acknowledges the demands on Club doctors in sometimes dealing with multiple concurrent injuries and other issues during a match, the Concussion Guidelines require strict adherence to protect the health and safety of our players.
“The AFL requires strict compliance of Clubs to the Concussion Guidelines to best protect the health and safety of our players”, AFL General Counsel Stephen Meade said.
“Brisbane fully cooperated with our inquiries in relation to this matter and has admitted its breach and is committed to working with the AFL to improve its processes”.
“The AFL also acknowledges its role in the important task of improving player care and the new measures that have been introduced this week, including extending notifications from the ARC Medical Spotters for mandatory off-field assessment including SCAT6 to Club GM’s of Football, are part of those efforts.”
