Adelaide: Rory Sloane announces his retirement, effective immediately, after undergoing eye surgery in the pre-season.
“I have given it my all to get back to playing and generally speaking my body is in great shape and I’m mentally fresh but ultimately, the risk of another eye injury is too great,” Sloane said.
“More so the impact it could have on my life and the potential for loss of vision. I’ve come to realise this is definitely not like the more common injuries you can get from playing the game.”
Damien Hardwick praised second-gamer Jake Rogers who scored 98. He said: “He was really exciting. He’s very clean with the ball in hand. His ability to find a target inside 50 is probably something we’ve lacked a little bit. He’s only going to get better as he gets fitter. His fitness level is not where it needs to be, but he’ll work his way through that and get better as the season goes.”
Hardwick said Sam Clohesy had a wrist concern but was “fine”, along with Bailey Humphrey who was subbed out after a head knock, passing his concussion test.
“Meanwhile, imaging has confirmed a low-grade hamstring strain for captain Connor Rozee. Rozee felt tightness in his hamstring following a kick, and will be assessed throughout the week to determine his availability for the Showdown.”
“He’s pulled up pretty well. It’s still a little bit of wait and see. There was something there. He’s not feeling it right now. Probably similar to Ollie (Wines) and Jase (Horne-Francis) to be honest so it’d be touch and go for this week. Most likely not. But who knows. We’ll wait and see.
“We have seen before where there’s been scans where guys have got something and been able to play but we’ll just wait and see. He obviously will be a test but there’ll be a bit of caution. He’s a chance but it’s probably a small chance. He’s walking around, he can’t feel anything while walking.
“Look, we won’t put him out there if we feel like there’s any risk in that stage. It looks like there’s a little bit of risk but who knows, with the week, we’ll see how it plays out..

It was the view of the MRO that Maynard did not sling, drive or rotate Owies into the ground with excessive force, and accordingly the MRO did not consider that Maynard’s actions were unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.
“It’s a little groin (injury), maybe. Hopefully not too bad. He’s did one last year and he said it’s not as bad as that. Hopefully it’s nothing but it’s probably something.”
