Last night we had the Mid-Season Rookie Draft with 22 players picked up. This could give us some cheap downgrades in the back half of the year although they come at a risk as we saw in 2019 with shaky JS or scoring potential but only the clubs and players will know for sure. Feel free to let me know if you agree or disagree with anything I have said or if you know of any more information please let us know.
At the time of writing this, player positions and prices haven’t been released but all of the players should be bottom priced at $102,400 apart from Matt Parker. By my rough calculations he will be priced between $160,000 and $200,000 depending on what season’s average SuperCoach go with, 37.5 in 2020 from 2 games or 53.5 from 17 games in 2019. The players that I think are likely to debut are the more obvious ones, players that are older, more experienced or know the system they are joining. I have given a player rating for how likely I think they are to debut this season with (10/10) being the most likely. My pick of the draftees would be Newcombe who goes from Box Hill to Hawthorn so could come straight in next week and looks to have good scoring potential.
All stats are averages except for goals and behinds or otherwise stated.

Why/ what would cause clubs to pass?
Some clubs wanted flexibility at the end of the season. Room to re- instate long term injured and not to delist players for draft. I suppose salary cup might come into it.
A seriously tremendous wrap, Alza.
Definitely gonna come back to this when considering downgrading to any of the mid-season draftees to get a sense of their role and JS.
A big take away for me was that the Hawks DIDN’T take Ned Moyle, as some had speculated. Pretty much confirms that they’ll roll with Reeves, making him a prime downgrade target.
Cheers again.
Great work Alza.
Some comments from clubs on their trades.
3 Collingwood – Ash Johnson “Having been overlooked in previous drafts, the Pies believe he is ready to play at the next level with a spot on an AFL list. Johnson has booted 13 goals from six matches for the Double Blues this season.”
4 Adelaide – Patrick Parnell – “We approached this year’s mid-season draft with a medium to long-term view rather than addressing any specific need for the 2nd half of this season.” Adelaide recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie
5 Gold Coast – Ned Moyle – “Given the recent injuries in the ruck department it’s fantastic to be able to bolster that area of our list.” Gold Coast National Recruiting Manager Kall Burns
11 West Coast – Will Collins “Will Collins, our boys have been calling him ‘Phil’. He trained with us in the preseason. He’s 191cm, he’s quick and he’s a competitor.” Adam Simpson
15 Melbourne – Kye Declase – “Declase is a ready-made talent who spent a week training with the club earlier in the year and will provide immediate depth for the Demons this season.”
20 Carlton – Jordan Boyd “He’s 22 years of age… he really grasped the opportunity of VFL footy with both hands and we feel he’s the kind of player who can thrive in an AFL environment.” Head of List Management Nick Austin
23 West Coast – Connor West “Connor is a bit more mature, a bit more ready… We have some young mids, but Connor will add to our depth.” Adam Simpson
12 Sydney – Lachlan McAndrew. “We think he’s got really strong potential.. He probably won’t play this year, but we see him as very much a long term prospect for the club” Sydney CEO Tom Harley
Kye Declase UPDATE ($102k D/M) “Kye is ready to play AFL footy if his form warrants it. He’s got the habits that would drive an AFL career and at 24 years of age, he’s still got a lot of learning and growth in him.” Simon Goodwin Presser.
Great work, Alza!! And a nice bit of follow up from you too, CT!
Thanks boys!!
As Alza thought all rookies are $102,400 and Matthew Parker is $141k ( M/F) a 30% discount on his 2020 supercoach average
Alza,
Thanks, great input (again) and especially love your reserves weekly review, which makes some of the downgrade decisions slightly more secure in my head before I press the button (discounting what coaches subsequently do anyway!)
Your time is appreciated.
