Poll: Patrick Cripps

Written by Motts on March 29 2021

The Carlton captain came into the 2021 season priced very attractively – $523,700 – but his first two outings have yielded scores of just 88 and 82. This is from a guy who was averaging 101 before an injury in Round 18 last year.

We all know how good he can be which makes this week’s decision a toughie.

Is It Time To Tip Cripps?

  1. Less stoppages this year are affecting his ability to bulldoze his way out of congestion and impact like he usually does. Not sure if he has the “F you, I’ll do it myself” attitude that someone like Fyfe has to switch things around.

That being said, he’s a champion player and although I’m not a Cripps owner but I’d hold for this week – next game against Freo will be a big test.

    1. He’s got to find a away around it it ain’t affecting Oliver or Bont who are similar builds to Crippa

      1. Cripps is slow. Not sure he can change that. Oliver and Bont aren’t two steps behind the play, and they are both able to get free and kick every now and then. I’m trading cripps to tmitch and will be glad when the trade is done. Cripps could score 140 this week, but will without a doubt have many more scores in the 80s, which is not cool

      He does.

  2. He has looked lethargic and honestly feels like he has cement in his boots. Also his contract situation doesn’t help if he doesn’t want to be at the blues. I say chop now whilst we have the chance.

  3. Am honestly on the fence atm.
He looks to be struggling with the open game style right now, surely he could adapt but there is also the higher handball to kick ratio with Cripps.
So if I have 30 trades left it would be a yes, but I’m already 1 trade down and want to bring Jordon or Warner in this week.

TU: save trade – Jordon or Warner only. Persist with Cripps and hopefully he makes a decent m7/m8

    TD: Cripps > Brayshaw
    Dow > Jordon/Warner

  4. Thanks Motts. I’m still undecided, but if I do trade it’ll be via some DPP magic to get either

    TU Short
    TD Butters

  5. I didn’t start him personally, but I feel like most teams would have more important things to sort out regarding rookies heading into round 3. Especially if you’ve traded one of Danger/Rowell already, you don’t want to be down on both cash gen and trades this early in the season.

I’d also be shocked if he averaged mid 80s for the year – it might not be a great year from him, but I’d still back him to average 95 from here out and that just isn’t worth the trade this week over getting rookies sorted and having flexibility later in the year.

I feel as though the longer quarters/reduced interchanges might mean more injuries later on in the year, so trading out a healthy premo (even if they are underperforming) just wouldn’t sit right with me.

  6. Tossing up whether to keep or dump Cripps but my preference is that he becomes A. Brayshaw. Reasoning here is the uncertainty of Cripps still playing with injuries. He is also more likely to be the target of taggers, whereas Fyfe is often the first tagged with Fremantle, not Brayshaw.

    1. DeBoer went to Brayshaw after half time on the weekend, without much effect for SC. Fyfe plays mostly forward and doesn’t get tagged

  7. Having watched the Collingwood V Carlton game, Cripps seemed to look out of place with the fast paced ball movement and his impact up forward was minimal. I have always been a big fan of old Crippa and have had him for the past few years but starting him this year looks to have been a mistake. I am happy with the rookies I have started and have the funds available so am thinking it would be best to swap Cripps for either Macrae or Mitchell.

    Cripps out TU/TD in?

    TU: Macrae
TD: Mitchell (better balance for bye rounds)

  8. He’ll be fine. And he’s cheap, so it’s not like he’s going to hemorrhage cash (unlike, say, Neale).

    1. I know neale has a high ceiling but , cripps is ave more at the moment and cost 200k less. Not going great but reasonable value for money.

  9. Having Caldwell means he goes to Tex, and Henry goes to Warner. Just my situation…… but far better trades for me than dumping Cripps.

  10. Big news from Sam Edmund:

Patty Cripps is playing hurt. He’s plagued at the moment by an injury that requires weekly injections to get him through I’m told.

If it were December or January – he would be sidelined for 4-6 weeks but he is pushing through.

      1. Good question Nato’.
Do we tolerate Cripps’ scores to date knowing that he is playing injured rather than losing his mojo, and expect improvement?
Or is knowledge of the injury reason for us to move him on?

        1. I’m glad I didn’t select him, but I would be making a really tough decision if I did have him.
With Cripps under an injury cloud but still playing, how long will that injury be making an effect on his scoring? It would probably be down to other trades. I’d treat it as a luxury trade and would only make it if I don’t need to trade out players like Caldwell and don’t need to bring in must have rookies

  11. Carlton midfielder Patrick Cripps is playing through a “mystery injury” that would force him out for four to six weeks if this was the pre-season, reports SEN’s Sam Edmund.

The Blues gun was below par in Thursday night’s loss to Collingwood, but he has reportedly been requiring injections before every game, which partly explains his form.

While not explaining what the injury actually was, Edmund said it’s not an issue that is getting worse while Cripps plays with it.

“Paddy Cripps is playing hurt,” Edmund said on SEN’s Time On.

“The fact of the matter is, he’s being plagued at the moment by an injury that’s requiring weekly injections, I’m told, to get him to the start line.

“I‘ve been told by club sources that if this was a pre-season time of the year, December, January or even February, then Paddy Cripps would be put on ice for four to six weeks. But this mystery injury has got him playing hurt.

“I‘m told there’s no risk of it getting worse with him going out there, so he’s just got to put up with it.”

    1. This explains a lot. I’m still holding for the time being (I have other issues to tend to anyway), but knowing that, I wouldn’t begrudge anyone trading him out until he recovers.

  12. I am a blues supporter & also have Crippa in my team but after watching against the pies, very slow, had chances to grab marks up forward but just look to be struggling bigtime, he has no mongrel towards opponent, just cruising, maybe he will still score 80s, 90s but are there better mids for your team who score more, week in, week out, l think so, his injury aint goin away

  13. looks to me like he’s sacrificing his own game to win the ball & mostly hand ball to the kids around him , a teaching role
wait till the young guys around him start dominating possession in a couple of years & he is free’d up to play his own game
he might be part of an era where he is considered 1 of the best ever players
early crow but he’s got it in him
wish he was @ the hawks

  14. Yes he looks slow but it’s a long season and he has been battered for 4 seasons now, and this is not sustainable for longevity in the game.

If he got some simple fundamentals right he would have scored 105+ and we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

523k for a potential top 10 mid. I will be holding for a few more weeks.

    Good Luck.

  15. Carlton HP Director Andrew Russell: “Had some soreness in the 1st couple of rounds. It’s not uncommon for players to play with soreness. We’re very confident that after the 10-day break, we’re going to see a really good Patrick Cripps.”

    1. On current form they are, but overall I think that’s a bit harsh on Cripps. It was only last year that Oliver was questioned over his impact on games & that he wasn’t damaging enough & the big criticism on Bont was that he couldn’t kick for goal.

I just hope we haven’t seen the last of beast-mode Cripps, fingers crossed.

  16. he’s 100% confirmed injured, playing in a game which has tried to reduced stoppages (his specialty) and is being sped up. Everything is pointing against him performing like he used to. he’s done as a SC premium for mine, at least for this season.
