  1. The first all too early attempt

    N. Daicos, H. Sheezel, H. Young, A. Witherden, D. Curtin, N. Coffield (Z. Reid, M. Hore)
    Z. Butters, T. Green, A. Brayshaw, S. Walsh, J. Newcombe, T. Miller, C. McKercher, J. Sharp (E. Allen, J. Clarke, J. Sinn)
    M. Gawn, B Grundy (S. Naismith)
    J. Macrae, T. Lynch, H. Reid, O. Fantasia, M. Tabener, A. Cadman (S. Darcy, D. Jones)

$46k leftover, I imagine Newcombe gets sacrificed and the funds used to boost the forwards at some point.

  2. Daicos, Sicily, Young
    Z Williams, Gibcus, Coffield
    (Dean, Hore)

    Bont, Petracca, Laird, Dawson
    Gulden, Green, McKercher, Sanders
    (Roberts, Clark, Sinn)

    Grundy, Sweet
    (Livingston)

    Macrae, Rachele, Lynch
    H Reid, Mannagh, D Jones
    (Cadman, George)

The forwards are worse than ever. Not a single player above rookie price that I actually wanted to pick.

Can’t see Sweet actually being at R2 when the season starts but it sure does open up a lot.

  3. Looking at new bye rules

Best 18 in rounds 2/4/6/8 is going to wipe out bad rookie scores in 50% of your early rounds

So if you can start with say 14 premos and 4 midpricers you will be complete for 1/2 of the first 10 rounds and it will only get easier once upgrades start in round 6

That’s 4 onfield rookies wiped off your score and a chance to loop.

    Current structure plan is 4/5/2/1

Load up your high scoring lines and wait till forwards show up in round 6

Close watch Flanders and any viable F2 to change the structure

    1. Saw a post on Big Footy Forum that I thought had official info as it looked like the person had done a copy/paste on an official communication.

Opening round is being skipped just like AFL fantasy (because it’s a dumb joke of a round) and SC is starting rd 1

I got the two team bye rounds wrong as I thought it was every 2nd round but seems to be rounds 2, 3, 5, 6 being best 18

But essentially that means only round 4 and round 1 will be best 22 until upgrade season. Should get rid of your 4 lowest rookie scores which the other 4 which seems to make going 1 forward premium viable. Then just upgrade with certainty at rd 6/7 to sure up your team

May as well load up a best 18 and run guns and rookies

  5. Back at it again, with 2024 looking absolutely brutal, particularly with regards to R0 planning and the lack of starting forward options.

First draft, with a few notes below each line.

DEF: Daicos, Sicily, Stewart, Z Williams, Gibcus, Coffield [Pink, Schoenmaker]
Notes: 3 premos here pick themselves, hard to imagine I start with any others or with any of these 3 missing. Pink surely walks into North’s key back position, the rest of their defenders are…bad.

MID: Petracca, Butters, Gulden, Green, Walsh, Cox, McKercher, Sharp [Allan, Clark, Lorenz]
Notes: This will be the cheapest we see Walsh for years assuming no persistent injuries, Cox is a lock if fit. McKercher would need to show a bit in preseason to start here, given the cost.

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy [Reid]
Notes: This just feels right. English is prohibitively expensive, and would require a structure shuffle to get in…but he is bloody good.

FWD: Macrae, Bolton, Harmes, Reid, Cadman, Mannagh [Darcy, Dawson]
Notes: This has to be the worst set of options within one line we’ve ever seen…I’m almost tempted to go 0 premos, but there aren’t even many/any decent mid price options to supplement with. Ugh.

    $61,000 ITB.

  6. Hey Bozza.

My first thoughts on this team is you spent big on defence Premo’s. I feel there’s some real value in guys like Sheezel, H Young , and maybe even Ridley now McKay is there. Spending top dollar on the three most expensive defenders rarely works out on any line.

I love your midfield selections, but you may need to check the fixture as all your current Midfield Premo’s have an early Bye except for Butters. I know its early days but something to consider anyway. Premo’s from teams like Freo and Adelaide don’t have the early Byes and maybe worth considering as better starting picks.

My second thought is you may need to dig a bit deeper when looking at mid-pricers in the forward line. Most are role dependent but I see a world where all these guys could average well above their price.

    Tom Lynch. $287.300
    James Jordan. $275.500
    Dev Robertson. $253.600
    Elijah Tsatas $224.900
    Jack Billings $243.900
    Tom Emmett $182.200
    Finlay Macrae $152.600

Happy planning and hope you have a great Xmas.

    1. Cheers FT, appreciate the comments!

H Young is certainly on the radar, Ridley is inching towards never-again territory the way he flip flops between elite and afterthought.

Great point re byes, homework for Jan/Feb!

The FWD mid-prices leave me very unimpressed, compared to other lines where we have guys coming back from injury or who have done it before (K Coleman, Z Williams, J Simpkin, X Duursma, Grundy, even Harmes for brief periods). Billings couldn’t get a game with the Saints who were more than happy to let him go, hard to see him being more than injury cover for the Dees (admittedly he’s often been injured, but that’s hardly a positive). Lynch apparently only just doing light running now, so he’d need a huge preseason game performance to come into calculations. Jordan and Dev I like, but Dev is in the most stacked mid in the league and Jordan not far behind at Sydney, so hard to expect them to take on new larger roles given circumstance. Jordan is a watch though. Tsatas I like the idea of, wish he was 20-50k cheaper though given he’s barely played. Macrae not a bad one for that price and has been in and out, but boy he’d want to show something soon or he’ll be delisted almost certainly.

Cheers again, great to have discussions up and running!

        1. Gday Mark – that’s such an interesting point, I hadn’t thought of that until now. Obviously Dusty always scored pretty well, but none of the Tigers other mids really pushed into the uber premo category.
Hard to know what the impact of the coach/system/tactics is on that vs the players themselves – I’d say Touk has a stronger track record of elite scoring than any Tiger mid did in the Hardwick era, but if Hardwick moves that handball flick quick style up to GC, hard to see how the high tackle and high CP style of Touk performs very well.
          Food for thought!

          3

          0
        2. Hardwick midfield profile toxic for SC. Big negative possession differential, relish forcing turnover. Soured me on Flanders, plus R0.

Miller just too lit though, so he starts. Did 120.3 and 124.5 the years before 2023’s injury riddled kerfuffle.

    1. Fast version

      Forwards are poop
Aledgedly Need at least 1 forward premium
Jackson should be a good enough F6 and is the best available ruck cover (which you will need for early byes and late byes)

And has the best bye (Freo/port have the easy bye) is overpriced but hopefully not too much.

  9. Draft I’ve landed in based on the news of round 0 not counting, decided to avoid starting basically all premos who play the opener and therefore have two byes to come. Still interested in Flanders, Trac, Grundy and Gawn though. Paid up for rookies for now until the cheaper options present themselves over the summer.

    1. Not sure about the r0 strategy…we have unlimited trades after round zero, so as we all start off playing for OA, we can wait till r1 before we start looking too far ahead. But, its still worth keeping in mind.

      2

      2
      1. I’m aware of the unlimited trades, but from what I understand round 0 scores only count towards player price cycles etc, and don’t count for overall. So really we’ll just be watching to see roles and how rookies perform.

      2. Wighty the way I see it is you take as few round 0 players as possible as they will be the teams with the early byes. Obviously there will be some that you need to take.

  10. Doesn’t it come around quickly!

Some Sunday afternoon playing on the SC app and I have my first draft, no doubt first of many.

Daicos, Ridley, Young, Cox, D’Ambrossio, Z Williams / Gibcus, Coffield

Bontempelli, Butters, LDU, Walsh, Miller, E Tsatas, Reid, Curtain / Dowling, Sinn, Stanley

Gawn, Grundy / Livingstone (dpp loop)

Jackson, Flanders, Harmes, Culley, Emmett, Cadman / Bauer, Darcy

    Happy to hear anyone’s thoughts.

Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone

      1. He was in and out of my side a bit while I was playing with it this afternoon but in the end I went with Flanders for $100k less, put Harmes in thinking he’s more likely to get games and have a decent role with Smith out and Jackson gives me ruck cover….but it’s all wait & see really

    1. I’m interested because good bye and presumably number 1 ruck spot.

For what it’s worth, much of the conversation about him from Norf fans I’ve seen on socials hasn’t been glowing. Makes me wonder whether he has the upside to push 100+, or if he’s just a low 80’s guy this season.

Think my main concern is outside of his tap work and hitouts, how does he score? Hasn’t been a possession winner or contested/intercept mark player so far in his career, so wait and see how he goes as #1 option this preseason for now I think.

Fixture: GWS, Freo, Carlton, Lions. Basically the four densest, sharkiest midfields.

    1. Hey BF,
Like your backs, mids & rucks, but just think too many rookies down forward. Hard line again this year and where SuperCoach will be won or lost.
I’d probably drop one of your mids and get a couple of mid pricers in your forwards- nothing worse that only having 3/4 forwards playing and they’re all throwing out low scores

      1

      1
    2. tried and true selections which are hard to go past…

      backs are strong

mids: Libba great pod, Walsh – unsure of his role and looked unhappy last year imo, will Dimma let Miller loose or be used more as a defensive mid given the Suns young guns…Newcombe set to shine in 2024…value there as there might be in an overlooked but fit Steele also

rucks: old faithful combo…Grundy set to shine again…has plenty to prove

      fwds: take your pick

    1. Hey, Willy. Hope you’re feeling better. Christmas corona lol.

You’ll need McKercher in the middle. Probs too big a spend down back tbh.

And McLean a big no. Red hot form late and becoming a good player in a good side but just not SC material. Up to Flanders/premium or down to a MP.

        1. Hey Willy.

Its really hard to know what’s hopping with both Naismith and Sweet.

You would think Soldo maybe ahead os Sweet at Port. Also Port tend to play only one Ruck with both Finlayson and Dixon as back up.

Naismith is certainly behind Nankervis at Richmond. Saying that The Tigers have a new coach so who knows how they will structure up.

Probably the most likey to play is Toby Conway. He is $180k after playing the one game last year. He’s the Future at the Cats and you would think they continue to plays him.

Best of luck and happy planning

  15. Morning, morning, morning.

    Here’s where I’m at.

DEF: Sheezel, Ridley, Young, Chapman, Curtin & Coffield [Busslinger, Hore]

MID: Butters, Gulden, Green, Brayshaw, Rozee, Miller, McKercher & Saunders [Clark, Hotton, Mannagh]

    RUC: Tingles & Grundy [Strachan/Naismith]

FWD: Bolton, Harmes, Tsatas, Billings, Reid & Wilson [Cadman, Bauer]

    3/6/2/1 + 4x 200k MPs

    Revisiting the lines it’s basically:

DEF: rock solid on those 500k boys, don’t want to pay 600+, good rookies

MID: going young, M6-8 pretty standard

RUC: Gawn R0 out, may as well pay for Tingles, Grundy lock, angling for R3 that eventually plays

FWD: got spicy today, dropped Macrae and Flanders, inception’d myself into Bolton, MPs are placeholders, rookies look trash bar Reid

Doing some writing and squizzing on teams. Good luck, all!

    2

    1. a young guns and rookies team…similar to mine atm

      a few things hit me…

..Why is spending 600K in the backline different to the mids, particularly when one in particular will essentially play as a mid?

…how do you expect fixtures to impact your decisions around captain and loop…

,,,like the Bolton pick…hopefully Yze gives him mor mid time…so so explosive…

      4

      0
      1. “..Why is spending 600K in the backline different to the mids, particularly when one in particular will essentially play as a mid?”

For one, price maintenance. Scoring range of DEFs, while very strong, means they’ll drop in price or hover around their starting. Can get them later, whereas a MID can come out firing and be unattainable. Next, I don’t like paying 600k for players I wouldn’t be 100% straight C-ing. I’ve also loaded up on more MIDs than DEFs on account of the byes, with Rozee, Butters and Brayshaw having that dream bye. Had to limit myself with R0 players, so have gone Green over Daicos at this stage.

“…how do you expect fixtures to impact your decisions around captain and loop…”

Yeah, like I said limited myself to just Green, Miller, Gulden and Grundy from R0. Miller and Grundy are extreme value, will be high ownership and must haves. Gulden and Green I’m super hot on and think they’re worth the early bye penalty. Have passed on Flanders, Daicos and Gawn at this stage. Green has a nice early fixture, including North and Eagles in the first two rounds, and Tingles is always rock solid. They will carry the armband early.

Ya. Excited about Bolton. Has to be OB. Macrae washed, Jackson 2nd fiddle and not sold on Flanders just yet.

  17. What i’m liking so far…
Looking for lots of depth for all the best 18 games.(Is there more than usual?)

DEF, Sic, Stewart, Sheezle, Ridley ,Young, Williams-Gibcus, Coffield.
-leaving 1 spot open for a bolter/corrective trade.

MID, Daicos, Ginbey, Tsatas, Eramus, Reid, Mckerscher, Sanders, Curtin.
    Rookie x 3.
-Move daicos to the def if no one turns up there.
But Throw a blanket over the top 15 -20 mids select whomever whenever their cheap. Just don’t trust them anymore to start them(yes 1 or 2 most years are reliable but sick of Positional changes, form slumps, concussions etc. If there cheap starting picks i don’t care how bad they go).

    RUC, Tingles, Gawn. -ruc/fwd rook.

FWD, Jackson, Wright, King, King, Armarty, Lynch- Amiss, Cadman.
    Jackson covers Gawn’s bye.

The rest are KPF just for a spike game and move on asap.(yeah go on and laugh, but show me your fwds, least i have a plan and bat deep with all the byes)
There there for 1-3 big games in a block only. Then move them on. No idea who to though lol.

Only 9 keepers so far, Macrae, Touk, Walsh may need to be added.
Not having Bont and English in starting team. And really want to run this likely POD ruck setup.
How long can I hold my nerve on this structure for…

    1. Interesting TOF, as you say only 9 keepers….how much ITB ??? Mids look terribly light. This team would probably get you off to a slow start even with best 18’s early….the offset being potential for quicker cash generation. With most teams trying to start 13 or so keepers, you are also committing yourself to 8 extra trades on a one up one down basis, but maybe we will have the luxury to do that this year.

      3

      0
    2. Yeah, TOF. Seems like another of one of your “I’m not like other girls” teams.

There’s no need to spaz out and be that unique though.

Wighty’s right. MIDs score the most and those FWDs will be prone to rookie like scores.

The DEF line is probably the one line where you shouldn’t overspend. The rookies are good and the 500k options are healthy. Probably shouldn’t have more than 1-2 of the 600k guys there (I’ve got none actually).

Instead of KPFs like Wright, the King brothers and Amartey, just give guys like Harmes, Tsatas, Hewett, Billings, etc. looks. A couple of them, plus Reid and then a premo at F1 is solid.

  18. 13x potential keepers
    6x Round 0 Premos

Def: Sinclair, Young, Witherden, Williams, Gibcus, Coffield (Hore, Pink)

MID: Butters, LDU, Brayshaw, Walsh, Miller, McKercher, Sanders, Curtain (Sharp, Roberts, Clarke)

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Sweet)

FWD: Macrae, Dusty, Flanders, Harmes, Billings, Managh (Wilson, Burgess

Want Gulden Green Daicos so if they go large round 0 then they could be added, if they dont then even better.

Butters my concern, didnt have the fantasy score like the above 3 who all had around the 112, his was only 98. Thats a fair difference in terms of base stats to score from. In his favour is his bye rnd and that avg 133 over last 6 games

  19. This is my very quick first draft. Zero consideration to byes beyond passing on Walsh for his. A lot of placeholder rookies because it’s all speculative until selection. A lot of key fwds too, but absolutely nobody is jumping off the page on that line for selection this year – figure they’re good cash gen with potential big weeks on the cards until the real Slim Shadies stand up.

    DEF
    N.Daicos, J.Sicily, T.Stewart, Z.Williams, D.Curtin, J.Gibcus (M.Hore, N.Coffield)

    MIDS

    1. I like the team overall except the KP forwards. Cameron is fine imo, but Lynch and Georgiades are very interesting picks. Price is fine, but how fit is Lynch going to be? And how well is MG going to score..? Only averaged 58+59 in 21/22 and has a high score of 107 hitting the 90’s 3 times in the career. Understand the cash gen side to it but can’t see alot coming from him. And how Tall will Port play? Dixon, Finlayson, MG, Marshall, Lord, DBJ + Soldo/Sweet/Both? Be interesting what they do forward but It’d be safer with the crowd with someone like Billings/Harmes imo.

  20. What to do given this crazy weather ???? Have a go at my first team for 2024

Daicos Lloyd Ridley Coleman Williams Pink (Archer Coffield)

Rozee/Butters Walsh Miller Titch Robertson J Sharp
    McKercher Sanders (Roberts Mannagh Fahey)

    Gawn Grundy (Maley)

Macrae Jackson Adams Flanders H Reid Cadman (A Kennedy Kreuger)

    ITB $41.0

At a pinch, and including Coleman, reckon there could be 14 keepers. Also reckon Kreuger gets games given McStay drama and provides another loop. Jackson means two rucks each bye. Ridley set for a huge season now he is freed up. Other rookies dependent on selection. Will decide on either Butters or Rozee later.

  21. Def: Sicily, Sheezel, Ridley, Young, Williams, Curtin (Pink, Coffield)

Mid: Butters, Gulden, Serong, Walsh, Miller, McKercher, Sanders, Sharp (Dowling, Stanley, Clark)

    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (Naismith)

Fwd: Macrae, Flanders, Lynch, Reid, Wilson, Mannagh (Darcy, Dawson)

Lynch will become the best mid priced option out of him, billings, Jordon and Chapman (by swinging curtin into mid). My third year doing SC so any feedback welcome!

  23. Greetings Supercoaches,

Here we go with the current iteration of ‘The Buttslappers’

Defenders – Ryan, Ridley, Young, Wiiliams, Coffield & Curtin (Pink & Gibcus)

Mids – Merrett, Daicos, Dawson, Walsh, Butters, T Dow, McKercher & Sanders (Sharp, Hall & Clark)

Rucks – Grundy & Gawn (Maley)

Forwards – Macrae, Martin, Billings, Reid, Darcy & Tsatas (Emmett & Mannagh)
    Bank – $100

Not much $’s in the bank but hoping that if I need to do a correction I can downgrade someone like Tsatas to a Wilson for example.
Quite keen on Emmett of Freo. With Shulz gone and Walters on his last legs I reckon there is a spot there for the taking.
Darcy should slot nicely into CHB for the Dogs and with his height become an intercept marking beast.
I am predicting a bit of a changing of the guard at Richmond hence my selection of T Dow.
Still not convinced by Daicos and he and Merrett may become LDU and Laird.
Captain & Vice Captain most weeks will be Gawn & Grundy but also obviously Daicos and Merrett.
Chose Ryan as he plays nearly all games, doesn’t do dumb shit like Sicily and Stewart’s rumoured move to have more midfield time I think will actually reduce his SC relevance.
Yes there are a couple of random picks but need to pick some PODS otherwise you get nowhere.
Looking forward to hearing peoples thoughts.

  24. solid team….similar to my current iteration…fwiw…
…you could use the same argument for Young as you did for Stewart

    …re key mids…agree with leaving Merrett out…less so Daicos…

    …rookies pick themselves atm..I’m a fan of both Emmett and Darcy….Hall is a great bench option…a gun…

Gundy and Gawn value and safe with upside

…as for Billings…not sure what he will do at Melbourne what he could never achieve at the saints….Dusty…wait and see but he maybe be playing for 2025 $$$ at the Suns so could be worth a gamble…

  25. First team – early look.
B: Daicos, Sicily, Sheezel, Williams, Gibcus, Coffield (Curtin, Hore)
M: Bontempelli, Merrett, Butters, Miller, McKercher, Sanders, Sharp, Clark (Hotton, Mannagh, Rawlinson)
    R: Gawn, Grundy (Naismith)
F: Macrae, Jackson, Flanders, Harmes, Reid, Cadman (Jordan, Bauer)

49K left. Looking at it as I typed it I think the midfield is a bit shallow.
If Nick Watson is named round 1 he’ll be going in.

    1. 12 keepers and as you said looks thin in mids- but everybody has a weakness somewhere- and often best opportunity for rookies in mids- like it!

    3. Jackson at $547k, you can get a decent midfielder like Steele or Walsh for about the same.

if you keep Jackson, i’d go with a cheap DPP at R3

    R: Gawn, Marshall (Naismith)
F: Macrae, Flanders, Lynch, Reid, Fullarton, Cadman (Wilson, Bauer)

39k in bank gone with 3 port premos as I like ports start to the season with 5 home games in first 7 rounds

    1. seven starting defenders?

…Miller and Walsh early byes but represent value

..I’m personally going light up forward and investing more in Backs, Mids and Rucks…

      …agree re Port

      1

      0
        1. need to wait and see I reckon…not convinced of Macraes role or value apart from him being highly owned which may be a compelling reason to own him…I’m avoiding any Suns players until their game style becomes more obvious..

some cheapies for me up fwd include Liam Ryan pending his role, Tsatas depending on his CB % and possibly J Jordon with dual status…then there are others discussed elsewhere on this site…

I’m also avoiding R0 players apart from two, maybe three, if I take an unlikely punt on Williams in Def…speaking of Defs, I’m loath to leave Daicos out from R0 as it may take some considerable time to get him in…the damage he can do in the meantime…

          good luck in ’24

    1. The only problem with Lynch in your fwd line is it’s highly doubtful whether he’ll be available from round one, and if he is he wont be in any sort of good scoring condition.
I’d be tempted to take Kosi as a POD, he’s not a great scorer but in a more defined role this year at the Tigers we may see something.

      0

      1
      1. Haha, with the fwds available I think a lot of people will end up batting deep with the KPF ‘S just for a spike game then flip. No worse than most rookies. Except best 22 a big bonus.
Just due to the lack of GOOD selections there.

  28. Thoughts gang? Steering clear of round 0 premos unless value (gawn, grundy, daicos, flanders)
Reckon it’ll be more guns and rookies, although flirting dawson down to m.crouch and a def rookie up to chapman…
Anyone give me any info on chapman and if he’s worth? On a wing worries me…

DEF: Sicily, Sheezel, Young, Williams, Hore, Coffield // Gibcus, Pink
MID: Daicos, Dawson, Butters, LDU, Brayshaw, Mckercher, Sanders, Roberts // Sharp, Clark, Mannagh
    RUCK: Gawn, Grundy // Kreuger
FWD: Macrae, Flanders, Fisher, Billings, Reid, Wilson // Cadman, Darcy

Thoughts?? 12 keepers here (unless grundy becomes english later) vs 11 keepers if I go chapman and M.Crouch

          1. Round 5 is his bye.

if he does get tagged by the Hawks and puts in a poor score, you might have to wait until round 7 or 8 for his price to bottom out.

That should be ok, rookies culling season around then.

  33. Holidays are over, BBL is nearly over, time to think about an AFL team.

The early bye rounds make it interesting this year, maybe i’m over reacting to them, but my initial starting team has been chosen with two eyes on the byes.

I know the early bye rounds is best 18, but having a rookie score instead of a premium score will cost at least 60pts a player, and i’m seeing teams with upto 8 round 0 premiums, that will be 480 pts lost in the first 6 rounds. Equivalent to about 5,000 ranking places early in the season.

The defence premiums aren’t as clear-cut as last year with a few cheaper options available. I still think Daicos, Sicily, Stewart, Sinclair, Young, Docherty will be the top defenders come the end of the year, but the gap to the next level won’t be as far.

In the midfield, there are too many choices. There are 25 players who can easy be top 8 midfielders by the end of the season and there won’t be more than 5pt average difference between 20 of them. With a few question marks over starting Oliver, the standout big dog is the Bont. Was my best move last year starting with him and i can’t see a world where i don’t start him again. Captain pick every week. Green was originally ahead of Dawson, but the bye sways it to Dawson. I have both PTA boys, great early draw and i think one of them might be a sneaky DPP candidate in round 6.

Max was originally my first picked. I fading him because of his early bye round plus the memories of the pain of not starting English last year. Grundy is too much value and is the only premium with an early bye.

Macrae is the only genuine premium on the forward line (maybe Bolton if he gets more midfield). After him it is a dogs breakfast and i’ll be waiting to see who gets DPP after round 6. In the meantime, i’m happy to start a few like Billings, Jordon, Mackenzie around the $250k.

Outside of my premiums, i haven’t given it too much though, and as usual the Rookies will ultimately determine the structure.

    Defence:
Sicily, Sinclair, Young, Williams, Curtain, Gibcus (Reid, Coffield)

    Midfield:
Bontempeli, Dawson, Butters, Brayshaw, Rozee, Steele Sanders, Sharp (Binns, Clark, Mitchell)

    Rucks:
    English, Grundy (Kreuger)

    Forward:
Macrae, Billings, H Reid, Z Duursma, McInnes, Jones (Darcy, Mannagh)

    $9,200 in the bank.

    thanks fellas

    1. Hey Derek – love the background info you’ve provided for your team here.
Doch is a MID only to start with, but I’m sure we’d all be hoping he’ll get DEF DPP again mid-year.

Curious how you see Steele for this year, he was a frustration for his owners last year due to niggling injury and indifferent form. I’d be tempted to find the $$ to get him up to Walsh/Anderson, or drop Steele down to a Cox or other higher end rookie with those funds moved FWD to upgrade Billings or Duursma or into DEF to upgrade Williams to one of the other top 20 candidates like Ridley (who is the cheapest outside of Young who you already have). Shame we don’t have great FWD options like you said though.

      1. Thanks for Feedback Boz

With all the Carlton mids back, i can see Doch spending some time in defence, enough to make him a DPP. That’s why i’m not that keen on Newman.

Steele is there at M6 only because there is no mid-price midfielders i like. I was hoping Guthrie was going to be cheaper. Windhager at around $320k interests me a little. At a similar price to Steele there is Miller or Cripps, but the same frustrations await with them as with Steele. In Defence i was looking at Ridley as an easy move from Steele if needed, i can see Ridley being closer to top 6 defenders than Steele will be to a top 8 midfielder.

I was playing around with Max instead of English and allows Steele to be Daicos. I like alot, but gives me two more round 0 players.

Williams is at D4 for now, but could be our Yeo of last year and get injured in a pre-match. Chapman for a few dollars more could be an option.

    2. Gday Magic.
I think you’re a bit heavy on mid-price hail mary shots here.
Of course if they all come off, you’ll be laughing, but the chances of that are slim.
I like each of Coleman, Chapman and Williams in DEF – but backing all 3 is brave (I guess that’s part of the fun of SC).
Will Day is injured, so he’ll probably need to go – maybe down to a rookie to upgrade Crouch to a true premo.

      1. Appreciate your comment Real Bozza.

It’s too early for me to be thinking this is the team. I’m sure I’ll tweak to have a more GnR approach as the season gets closer. Genuine ty for the Will Day insight – was just looking at potential upside players in this side… certainly don’t want to consider anyone injured however.

  35. Hi All,

If I have read it correctly and thought it through properly or thought about it too much….(not the sharpest tool…..)

There are in effect 25 rounds of footy this year R0-R24
R0 – besides not making any sense to me…any team that plays – player score does not count for SC points…but does count for SC price.
So out of 25 rounds of football, only 24 count for SC points

R1 to 24 – any team that played in R0 will have 2 byes – effectively meaning those players (Daicos) will score SC points 22 times out of 24?
R1 to R24 – any team that did not play in R0 will have 1 bye- effectively meaning those players (Laird) will score SC points 23 times out of 24?

So Laird and Daicos, who have same points avg and price….
Daicos scores 116 points less than Laird over the year for same money?
Or another way…Daicos has to score an extra 5 points per game this year (22*5) to deliver the same ‘total’ points as Laird?
So loading up on R0 players at the start brings a penalty (points and $)?

So best strategy could be to wait until the R0 players have had their first bye (like Bris in R2) then bring in (say Neale) when – from that point on he will have one bye like rest of teams and therefore be on an even keel?

Which is a nice theory and not absolutely practical and there will be reasons for having R0 players in your team (eg. somebody being a bargain price before escalation)..but I assume too many R0 players could easily cost you 1,000 points for the year?
And while the bye rounds are best 18….I think an earlier post mentioned the potential 60pt drop from a premium to a rookie score (R0 premo does not play, a best 18 rookie scores 60)…so somebody who picked a non R0 premo moves further in front?

As I said, could be wrong…but food for thought.

    1. I think you have got most of that correct Cuzza.

Best 18 for rounds 12 to 15 won’t matter as much because we should have at least 18 premiums by then, but the early bye rounds will see a significant difference between having a rookie score vs a premiums score.

Almost impossible to get Neil in after his bye in round 2, even Daicos after his round 6 bye will be a struggle.

Teams with the best bye are Adelaide, Hawks, Saints and Dogs. They have a round 15 bye only. Means if you start with any of those players, you have them for 14 weeks straight.

Port and Fremantle bye are ok, they are the only two teams with a bye in round 13. Means you have them for 12 weeks straight.

11 of my 12 starting premiums are currently from those 6 teams (Grundy is only exception)

    2. hey Cuzza, that was my read as well for Premiums.

For Rookies/Midpricers that a coach may intend to upgrade at some point during the season, there may be a benefit from the early price-rise taking R0 players. Specifically, any rookies available from Collingwood, Sydney, Melbourne, or Richmond as those teams have the first by around ‘upgrade season’.

  36. Wow Cuzza, simple but effective analysis that I hadn’t taken fully into account. I was looking at byes simply to balance the side but didn’t go the extra bit to do the Daicos/Laird comparison for example.

Probs changes the way I look at a couple of selections, although not having Daicos (say) from the start might hurt as many will start him (78% just from the subscription picker). Those R1-R4 points may cost too many to catch up with a lesser Defender during those rounds.

Great insight though, thanks for posting.

    1. compare a Sicily to Daicos.

Say Sicily averages 114 (same as 2023) over the first 6 rounds. But he plays all 5 rounds, he will score 570pts.

Daicos will miss round 5. For that round is score will be replaced by a rookie score (even though it is best 18). Lets say the rookie scores 50pts.

For Daicos + the rookie score of 50 to score the same points as Sicily, Daicos will need to score 520 (570-50) in his 4 rounds = 130 per round. That is 16pts a round better than Sicily.

Alternatively, you can have a player who averages 98pts a round, score the same. This will save $100k on your staring team.

      1. Hey Derek, definitely some good food for thought there, as usual.
It’s tempting to not start Daicos but from Rd16 last year he went 132, 149, 139, 130…who’s to say he can’t do that or something similar over 4 rounds again? I just see him in the same way you see the Bont, someone you just have to have.

          1. won’t Daicos also benefit from any early price rise if he average 130+…may be difficult to get him in if so

  37. First run at it for the year, gonna be a strange start…

Daicos, Houston, Sheezel, Curtin, Gibcus, Coffield,
    Reid, Clohesy

Laird, Butters, Serong, Greene, Walsh, Miller, McKercher, Sharp
    Clark, Allan, Hotton

    Gawn Grundy
    Sweet

Macrae, Flanders, Reid, Wilson, George, Mannagh
    Cadman, Bauer

That fwd line makes me feel a bit queasy.

  39. Ok now would probably be a good time to list my thoughts before the soft tissues start to take effect

    Sinclair Ridley Young
    Chapman Williams Curtin
    Pink Coffield

    Bont Zerrett Dawson Serong
    Rozee Reid McKercher Sanders
    Sharp Clark Hall

    English Grundy Sweet/Conway *

    Macrae Harmes Tsatas
    Duursma Watson Caddy
    Wilson Mannagh

    $35500 ITB

    What’s the reasoning you ask?….

    Well I’ll start with mids:

Dawson and Rozee and not Laird and Butters because I feel they might be better prospects of DPPs….
Serong and not Brayshaw, the coin landed heads.

Rucks: Why the * for Sweet and Conway? The coin rolled under the fridge……

Other things to be considered: Z Reid Def, then move Curtin to mid, other Reid to Fwd and remove a minor.

My biggest move, which I’m considering, is both Sweet and Conway as R2 and R3 if they are both selected in Round 1.
I would then remove Grundy and use the money to replace either Chapman or Williams with Sicily.

So can I have your thoughts please?

    1. I’m with you on Sweet. I always like a risky R2 rather than locking away the whole ruck line. Sweet will need to be solo ruck though, otherwise slot in at R3.

  41. Dear Dr Derek,

‘Was just pondering the thought while my specialist tailors fitted me with a new jacket, whether it would be feasible to perhaps keep Grundy and oust English if Sweet and Conway are both playing round 1.

Here’s why, after I finish these lovely lollies the nurses just gave me…… and please feel free to consult with Prof Cuzza if he’s not out golfing……. 1. In theory (?) Grundy’s value will increase and English’s will decrease by the end of Rd 6 when the byes finish and DPP adjustments take place…… 2. By then there could/should be some quality forwards…..(hmm, these lollies are yummy…) to reassess your team layout….. 3. So then you would have a better chance to reassess your SC team, with the extra money ITB and start planning when a “normal (???) season begins.

I eagerly await your thoughts, and more lollies.

    1. You are suggesting having Grundy R1, Sweet/Conway R2/R3?

I would want either Sweet or Conway to be solo ruck before I did that. As a solo ruck, they should score 70-80 just by turning up, that is a great score for a rookie price. As a second ruck, they can sit at R3 and make cash.

Will have to monitor Port and Geelongs training to see what is happening. Neither play round 0.

If your going Sweet or Conway at R2, I wouldn’t start Grundy at R1. You will need trades to upgrade R2, and starting Grundy you’ll probably need to use trades to upgrade him as well.

There is a world where Grundy is a keeper. Maybe he is.

I’d be more thinking to start either English, Gawn or Marshall at R1, with Grundy, Sweet or Conway at R2 with idea to upgrade early.

Im fading Gawn. He is getting older and I’ve seen him have bad days when he gets double teamed.

English has been ‘unwell’? What does that mean.

      1. Thanks for the feedback Dr. Derek.

        I’ll start from the bottom and work back;

English: AFL News report from training, suggested he was training away from the main group “For Wellbeing”. (The online reports connected to AFL Fantasy etc.)

Grundy: ATM I’m still considering him being the seasonal R2. Round 1 selections will decide what I do with the others. We still have free trading availability after Round 0 don’t we? That’s where the selections will be finalised.
….but Yes, I was thinking about Marshall as R1 with Grundy at R2 if one or none of Sweet and Conway were selected.

        Cheers and thanks Doc.
