    1. Solid early team KB

I want to see where Fyfe and T Tomas are playing before adding them. There seems to ba heap of “value” Midpriced forwards this year so Ot will be interesting trying to pick the right ones.

    2. Hey, KB.

      Mint team.

Swore I wouldn’t even consider Fyfe given his injury profile but, damn, that’s a nicely filled out FWD line.

FT makes a good call with Thomas. Work rate on and off the field was seriously poor last year. Roos midfield already got constants in LDU and Simpkin, a returning Cunners and then two high end kids. Will need to really show up this pre-season to get a spot.

    1. Wow BF.

4x $600k+ defenders is a big spend down back. Its early day but I would look at dropping one in favour of another forward.

    2. Yeah. Too going deep down back leaves you with too much exposure up FWD and limited VC/C options.

I do get the impulse though. Sinclair, Dawson, Sicily and Stewart were all bangers last years and for periods were putting premo MIDs away.

  3. My first “Team Picker” team for 2023..
rookies are place holders though I tried to pick guys I think may get a game.

    Stewart / Dawson / Daicos
    Gibney / McKenna / Wilmont
    Dean / Hayes.

    Oliver / Bont / Steele / Mitchell
    Hopper / Ashcroft / Mackenzie / Phillips
    Blakey / F Macrea (F) / Chesser.(D)

    English / Marshall
    L Reidy

    Dunkley / Rozee / Taranto
    Cunnington / T McLean / M Phillipou
    T Berry / J Sinn.

So much fun to have a play around with this feature so early on.
My first picked were Dawson / Oliver / Steele and Dunkley . Although these guys are high priced, they are jets and guaranteed to finish close to top on their lines. They won’t be leaving my team unless they get LTI’s

I’m very conscious of trying not to overspend on defenders. We have never had so many $600k plus options. There seems to be a heap of value forward, so I want to try and go 4-5 deep if I can. I really like H Young as a breakout type in defence. I just think Daicos will have the better role (more mid time) so maybe a bit more consistent. I think it too risky to start both of these guys.

I’m not totally sold on Taranto or Titch, I just feel they present some value and will be highly owned so I need to have them for now.

Rucks are bit of a gamble this year. English should be R1 with Lobb coming in, and Marshall will be a lock if it looks like Campbell isn’t playing. Reidy is a mature age pick up ( Freo) that may sneak a game or two if Darcy cops a knock.

Let us know what you think guys !

    1. Eyyy, FT. Hope you’ve been well, habib.

So with you on the DEFs. 3x 600k premos down back just seems exorbitant. If I’m gonna start more than 2 premos there, it’ll have to be with Daicos at D3.

Team’s lit. Like the Bont and Rozee picks. Cunners didn’t get enough of a discount for mine at this stage though.

    2. I agree with the Dawson, Oliver, Steele & Dunkley as locked.

I’d probably add Stewart to that list as well.

I can see Marshall, Titch & Taranto not leaving my team either.

      Nice first team

      1. Thanks Derek.

Stewart is a very interesting one for me. His price suggests theres value and he started last year on fire. I do have a few questions though. After his return from suspension (R20) he started to get more attention. This also coincided with him playing more of a “team” game and allow other players to zone off and intercept. Duncans move to HB also seemed to mean he shared a fair amount of ball coming out of defence. I’m pretty sure he will be a top 6-8 defender , I’m just not too sure on starting him until I know how the cats will structure up down back. Does Bowes come in ?

Hope you had a great Xmas.

  5. Nathan’s Gunz v1

Stewart, Dawson, Daicos, Bowes, Wilmot, Chesser (Gould, Wagner)

Laird, Oliver, Miller, Steele, Hopper, Ashcroft, Blakely, Baker (Johnson, Sinn, Dowling)

Dunkley, Coniglio, Taranto, Fyfe, Bruce, Macrae (Sturt, Van Rooyen)

I’m sure my team will change 100000 times till lockout 😛

    1. Sicily, Stewart, Dawson, mckenna, Wilmot, Wagner (Dean, Chesser)

Oliver, Miller, Macrae**, Steele, Hopper,Ashcroft, Holland’s, Phillips (Johnson, Constable*, Uwland)

      English, Grundy (Madden)

Dunkley, Rozee, Taranto, Fyfe, McLean, Van Ro, (Berry, Richards)

Macrae could be on the down so tossing up with his spot. Some are hot on Bont but I’m not sure. Walsh can improve but still not in full training. Titch value but risky. Any suggestions?

Don’t think Constable will play. Have been looking at the rookies hard but obvious place holders. Will probably have to pay up more for rookies but at this point I’m hopeful with the structure.

Been playing 10 years and normally hit top 1000. Have hit top 50 a few times. Any suggestions welcome:)

      1. yeah, I doubt I will actually pick him, just didn’t love any of the options at his price and didn’t want lots of high priced defenders.

He went about 115 average in the last 6 or 7 rounds last season. I think he got more kick-ins, not sure if that will stay though. Will watch him over pre season.

  7. Hot damn. We’re back. Hope you’ve all been well!

Had trouble putting together a first draft. Best DEFs are all 600k, MIDs basically 700k, top end of the draft should get some exposure and are priced as such and then there’s a REALLY good crop of reasonably priced midpricers at either end.

Was able to drum up the following:

DEF: Sinclair, Dawson, Jones, Cole, Ginbey & Chesser [Wilmot, Dean]

MID: Laird, Satan, Neale, Brayshaw, Steele, Ashcroft, Phillipou & F. Macrae [Constable, Baker, Bond]

    RUC: English & Marshall [loop]

FWD: Dunks, Cogs, Taranto, Allen, B. King & Greene [Berry, van Rooyen]

Quite like Jones, Cole, Allen and King with their clearly defined B22 roles. Not too worried about Allen and King as key position FWDs given how ass 1st year FWD rookies can be.

Don’t have Hopper. Can totally see why he’s in a bunch of people’s first drafts and he may end up in my side come Round 1 but I’m still traumatized by Fatt Rowell.

Cunnington, Rozee, the other midpricers, Daicos and some other ruck combos also in consideration.

    1. Hey GunBoat

Nice first team mate . Very G&R structure. That Midfield is killer, but it does require a huge chunk of cash, and leave your defence a little ragged. Going off last years trends you might want to consider a few more “value ” picks. Hopper will be super popular and Sheed and even Worpel maybe worth a look if they get the CBA load.

Fyfe looks quite fit and seems to be back to training most sessions. If he gets through Preseason he will be a must get at $313k. I’m also looking at Bowes, If he looks best 22, he may get a gig at D4 as well.

Hope you enjoying the off season. look forward to planning for Team reviews etc in the new year.

      Have a good one bud

If he happens to run amok, you don’t want to not have him.
High ownership so no great loss.

        1. Yeah I am thinking Fyfe is at a price where is a good punt and should travel well enough to bring to the byes.

Is an interesting year for starting premos with the amount over 600k. The above has 12 but I feel like most are going to be cheaper through the year given how difficult it is to stay above 550/600. Wondering if this is the right strategy, or move to try and get 13/14 starting premos, but go more fwd and def heavy. Will have a go at one of those teams now!

          0

          0
          1. This is interesting! 14 premos, I guess would be targeting early near-completion, and aggressive luxury fixes through the byes. But would need a bit to go right, and some of these cheaper players to pay off as keepers;

            Defenders

  13. Here we go folks ..draft 1 of many:

Backs – Docherty, Ryan, Daicos, Bowes, Dean, Chesser (Ginbey & Wagner)
Mids – Laird, Millet, Brayshaw, Mitchell, Culley, Erasmus, Ashcroft (Philips, Johnson & Macrae)
Rucks – ROB & Meek (Madden)
Forwards – Dunkley, Rozee, Coniglio, Thomas, McLean, Sinn (King & Richards)

As usual this time of year worried about cheaper rookies and where are they.
Cannot see Johnson & Erasmus both playing same for Macrae and Richard’s so in a bit of a quandary there.
I like solo rocks hence ROB and hopefully Meek gets in ahead of Reeves.
I expect Bowes, Thomas, Culley, Erasmus to have really good years.
At the moment cannot fit Josh Ward in my side but early days.

Dunkley , rozee, taranto, Allen, McLean, king (comben, van rooy)

Betting against this years rookies, except Ashcroft.

Looking for room for D Cameron, T Cole, worpel, Clark, McKenna and Bruce

Will be tossing around Anderson v LDU T Green and B Smith Really like S Berry this year.

    0
    1. Hey, Phil.

Not sure Berry will take a big enough step this year to be serviceable as a MID only.

Had him late last year and watched him closely. Contested work, tackling and inside MID role are all there but very scant accumulating and outside game. Was gutted he hadn’t retained FWD status and was going to be a lock for me if he had but think it’s too steep a mountain for him to climb as MID only.

      Ofc gonna watch his pre-season.

      2

      0
      1. Thanks GD. I think you are right. Probably move one of the forwards into the mids and bring in D Cameron. Gives ruck cover and probably more likely to be a keeper than S Berry.

        1

        0
    1. Entering his 14th season, increasingly troubling injury profile with only 8 games and 2 tons last year (previous 2 seasons were 16 games), well past a full time MID role, Taranto and Hopper now put the nail in the coffin of him getting any substantive inside time. There’s some off field stuff as well apparently.

      No longer SC relevant.

Only an insane pre-season and reversal of all of the above would change that.

    1. Hey, Joe.

Thin down back not that bad at this stage imo. That top line premos are all 600k plus which feels exorbitant for DEFs. The rookie and midpricer crops also look promising, so going thin down back could be the play – it’s where I’m at rn.

Your MID line is unnecessarily filled out though. Dunks, Taranto and Rozee should be selected as FWDs and JOM is just a no (for now).

Like your ruck set up though. Also, what’s your read on Balta?

      1

      1. Cheers GD, no real read on Balta at the moment just feel he’s at that age where he’s ready to take the next step and turn into a Rance like defender, will probably come back to bite me. There’s a strategy with my mids, always feel the top rung of the mids are over priced at the beginning of the year and I can get them cheaper during the year, filling those spots with fwd premos makes an easier transition, the other option is to go short on the Uber mids but that costs trades. Thanks for the heads up on JOM.

        1. Yeah, totally get it.

Impossible to pick 5x MID premos for a traditional 3-5-2-3 rn when they’re all basically 700k lol.

    1. The problem with a 15 premium side is the potential lack of captain options. Feels like only Touk and Dunkley here. At his best Grundy. Feels like one more. Also, you only have 3 mids. So unless you intend to leave them there, giving yourself less cash generation makes it hard to fill 5 mid spots in my opinion. On the flip side not much work to do in other lines.

      1

    2. Phil makes a VERY good point on captaincy options and cash gen for five premos. I’d add not being a fan of the Gulden pick, but aside from that still a very good team.

Just shave off one of those 450-550 picks to get another one up to a premo MID and use the remaining scratch for a midpricer/depth.

We could be wrong though, so definitely save that structure.

      Nice work, Drury.

      1. Agree with both! Definitely not convinced by this team, but had found it difficult to even squeeze 13 premiums in while feeling happy with the team so thought would have a crack.

I think other issue is that Hopper, Fyfe and maybe a Bowes / Hunter Clark type could all compete with the likes of Gulden/Richards and maybe even Taranto. So could be better off using the cheapies there, and then making sure have better quality of premiums in other lines

  19. Hi all, I have been playing SC for 10 years. Best finish was 2021 with an overall ranking mid 600’s.

Like everyone else, I am my own worst enemy by doing sideways trades to cover injuries thereby running out of trades at the pointy end of the season. In 2023 I plan on being more strategic by starting with a 12 or 13 premo team who I hope will all be keepers. These premos will give me several captain/VC options each week.
I will allocate a certain number of trades before the season starts so that I can ensure that I have all premos on every line. Hopefully I can acheive this with 22 trades.
I am allocating 6 trades for long term injuries.
That would leave me with 7 trades for the finals which is my goal for 2023 rather than where I finish up in the rankings.
If one of my inital premos is injured I plan on carrying him unless it is a long term injury rather than doing a sideways trade. If that mean losing on any particular round then so be it.
    My initial team is:

Stewart, Young, Daicos, Gibney, Weddle, Dean, Wilmot, Cowan

Oliver, Neale, Miller, Warner, Mitchell, Ashcroft, Goater, Phillipou, Chesser, Dowling, Richards

    Grundy, Marshall, Williams

Dunkley, Taranto, Himmelberg, Fyfe, Sheezle, McLean, Comden, Davey.

Team is sprinkled with MMP players on every line to ensure I have sufficent cover each week for injuries etc.

    Good luck everone for 2023

    1. My wretched experience in this game has shown me that the easiest time to get the best players is before round 1 because there is always something that disrupts my plans.
Last year the top 6 defenders all average over 109 and the next 4 averaged between 100 and 105 . Hewett is the only player from last years top 6 that isn’t available as a defender this year Do you think young & Daicos will be top 6 this year? The chances of you needing to upgrade them are similar to or greater than the chances that they will be top 10

The rest of your team looks great to me except Fyffe & McLean

    1. Structurally, I think this will be very close to a lot of teams. And who would have thought that 3x600k defenders was the new normal?

I think the pick that stands out is Petracca – a bit unique at this stage.

I suspect we will be deciding which and how many of the 300k tempters we have. Yeo (already injured again), Bowes (will he be best 22), Worpel (with Titch and O’Meara gone, there does look to be a spot, but is he in the plan?), Hopper (probably the safest), Sheed (maybe we need to consider more) and Fyfe (the potentially biggest risk and reward, but if Freo want him ready for finals I really think will be carefully managed. It’s a long season, and I can’t see him bursting out of the blocks).

Haven’t seen Laird in a lot of teams. I really can’t see a knock on him, but the love ain’t there this early. Not in my team either, having said that.

Given we haven’t seen anything from this years new rookies yet, we will all naturally favor second and third year rookies at this stage. I am actually thinking this might stay the case. The wrap on Ashcroft is through the roof, so no surprise that he is the exception and in a lot of teams. With Dunkley coming in to what is an already strong midfield, maybe there is a small question mark.

The death of the set and forget rucks, long forecasted, has finally arrived. We also had a long period where coverage was a bit of a luxury. We have had a few years of cheap R3 options. Maybe they will emerge, but hard to see at this time. Might be the year to start Darcy Cameron or another Ruck/Fwd option in the forwards as cover. Seen a few sides have Cameron at R2, with the intention of moving him down later as cover. Get it on the basis that it gives time to wait for the right option to emerge, but if there is no R3 cover, may have the risk that you are running without cover early.

I think another key thing that sets a team apart is nailing the mid pricer who becomes premium. Not seeing that as much yet. Maybe the track burners might start more of that later. We will all have our list, but mine is Young, Daicos, Bailey Smith, S Berry, T Green, N Anderson, LDU, Newcombe, Warner, Rowbottom, Gulden. A bit of a lottery really, but a TGreen instead of a premium gives you a Sheed instead of a philippou.

Write this side down. A week before the season starts, pull it out and see how far you have moved from it.

      1. I looked it up and it’s not a thing unless you are referencing alternative facts.

2022 he averaged 121 over the last 5 games which was 10 higher than his season average and ranked him 3rd mid for that period.

2021 he was plagued with injury and only averaged 83 for the season and 74 in his last 5 thanks to 57 in final game

2020 averaged 97 for the year and a 26 in final round gave him a 5 round ave of 81. His 5 rounds before the 26 he averaged 101

2019 season average was 117 last 5 games he averaged 119

2018 season average 119 last 5 games he averaged 124

2017 season average 97 season ending injury in rnd 16 his 5 games before that he averaged 108

2016 season average 107 last 5 games he averaged 130

Apart from those 2 injury affected seasons he has always averaged more in his final 5 games than he did for the full season

  30. First look at a team

I don’t think the premiums will change much, it will be mid-pricer like Cunningham, Fyfe, Bowes that will be losing sleep over

Stewart, Dawson, Bowes, Jones, Ginbey, Mackenna (Weddle, Chesser)

Oliver, Macrea, Brayshaw, Steele, Mitchell, Ashcroft, Mackenzie, Phillipou (Blakey, Constable, Tsitas)

    Grundy, Marshall (Madden)

Dunkley, Taranto, Cunnington, Fyfe, Thomas, McLean (SMitchell, Sinn)

    $13k left

I doubt I will start both Cunningham & Fyfe (or either)

    3

    0
    1. Only 11 premos Derek. I think you are right about turning 2 of Bowes thomas, Fyfe and Cunnington into a premo. I think in defense. Last year we saw more players gain DPP mid season, and the forward line was the benefit.

I am disappointed that you haven’t gone with a risky R2! I guess that hasn’t been one emerge yet. Early days 🙂

      3

      0
      1. Yep.

        Once again, Phil bang on.

        11 premos not enough, Derek.

Do like the Brayshaw pick though. Surprisingly haven’t seen him in many teams besides my own so far.

        1

        0
        1. Good point about only 11 premos

Most years I’m guns and rookies and aim for at least 14 premiums, but most years that has included players like Daniel & Ridley, Whitfield, Titch & Kelly who arnt really 100% premiums.

I’m looking at who will be the next Ziebell, Daniher, Cogs, Sicily, the fallen premiums?

My premos also need to be durable

          0

          0
    2. I’m interested on your thoughts on Grundy Derek.
I thought Pittonet was better value and likely to average the same or within 10

      0

      3
      1. Grundy for $512k seems a bargain. Apparently has been training like a new recruit should.

I’m assuming he will be the number 1 ruck and expecting Gawn to pick up Forward status week 6.

Grundy can average 105+ which prices him at a small discount (I have my own points/price value calculation) where I think Pittonet will be around the 85+ which prices him about fair.

There are no standout cheap rucks this year for a risky R2, but I do see some value with Lycett who I have priced at 90, but should do a little better than that

        2

        0
        1. Yes Grundy is capable of high scores when he’s the main man at stoppages and bounces but are you assuming that Max will be relegated to Luke Jacksons role from 2022? I don’t think Gawn will do any less than 50% of the ruck work and I have zero recollection of Grundy as a fwd

Also like the look of Lycett but rucks apart from Gawn & Goldstien seem to breakdown more often than ever before. Picking 1 who will play mostly in the ruck and wont miss 6+ games is not easy, picking 2 is beyond me.

I’m keen to see what sort of role TDK gets this year. With Pittonet healthy and Mirkov taking great steps last year at VFL level I wont be suprised to see TDK as FB against the taller fwds and/or fwd pocket against the shorter defences

          0

          0
          1. I just think Grundy will do most of the Ruck and Gawn will be forward.

I have a feeling Ned will be first ruck at the Hawks. He might be my risky R2

            2

            0
            1. Yep interesting, Ned, Pitt, xerri, draper etc. select as sterpping stones till number 1 and 2 raise their hands, or they could just break out.

  31. Reposting now that the TU/TDs are back.

Since the original post D. Cameron and Fyfe have started to weigh on my mind. D. Cameron either as a straight FWD or even a starting RUC to see wear the dust settles re Top 2 then swing him FWD. Swore off Fyfe but 300k for a player of his clout AND one less FWD rookie is hella enticing. Can shave Tingles down to a cheaper ruck, cut one midpricer and one pricey rookie to make it happen.

    1. I like this team but don’t share your love for Jones he was only ever a 60-mid 70 ave when he was top 5 for contests won. He might be cheap but he’s a lot older and probably slower and its still expensive for low rookie scores

      4

      0
      1. Hey, Dave.

Literally as I was typing up a response to you I realised his price. Got my wires crossed and have been thinking this whole time him and Cole were both 180k!

Blues screaming out for a 2nd actual key defender. Jones fits the bill and B22 60-70 @ 180k WOULD have been all systems go but, you’re right, 223k probably doesn’t warrant as much enthusiasm as I first had. Hmm.

Would definitely need to be doing 70+ @ 223k. Will free up Weitering in that preferred 2nd key DEF and distributor role and there’s also Saad back there and Jones isnt regarded for his use, so won’t have the same amount of distribution as some key DEFs find themselves getting (eg. Sicily, Ryan, Cumming).

Hmm. Thanks for the double take, Dave. Appreciate it.

          1. Ffs lol. I’m all over the place.

Suppose it’s sort of the same deal. Dogs basically run a backline of HBs. Doubt Daniel, Dale and Richards will acquiesce to Jones.

            3

    2. Laird for me is just too expensive. Sloane should be back in the guts, he will need to be somthing special to average 120+ again

      1

      2
      1. Nah. Sloane well past it. Won’t impact the Crows midfield dynamic.

It’s Lairs, Keays, Berry and Schoenberg.

I love the Brayshaw pick. I think he and Neale will be mostly overlooked and can still easily be top 6-8 mids this year. I’ve gone 3 Premo defenders and Bont as a Mid premo . He played most of last year hurt and still killed it. With Dunkley now gone and the Dogs recruiting Lobb . I can see Bont playing heaps more Mid time and perhaps getting back to that 120+ range.

Good to see you repping WC with Cole and Allen. Thoughts on Sheed as a Midfield mid pricer ?

I’m thinking of putting together a piece on possible scenarios for the new sub rule . I’ve got a feeling many teams may try and start 2 Rucks or at least be likely to start an extra “tall”. The ability to use a strategic sub may allow teams to Sub off a tall or second Ruck as they tire for a “runner” or extra mid, as the game wears on ( maybe late in the 3rd qtr ) Love to hear you thoughts on what may happen. Could affect Tall player that missed a heap of footy like King and Allen ?
Also If rookies get the Sub role or are subbed off this may affect cash get . Might be worth a thread in the new year.

Have a great New year Bud, and see ya on the other side.

    1. Eyyyy. My man. Hope you’ve been well, habib.

Surely you ride Brayshaw with me this year? On a nice trajectory and the minute he adds the icing of CPs and TOG, he’ll be money.

Yeah, lol. Feels nice to finally have some Eagles players. Cole B22 premiership defender and thinking we’ll really go back to basics with defense this year, so he’s in.

Was actually talking with Abs about Sheed as a midpricer the other day. I’m not there. If he was going to slot into our 2018 premiership midfield firing on all cylinders, then yes – but our engine room and style are totally cooked. Don’t think the Eagles are a fertile enough environment for an SC MID given our historic CP issues and now present being shit issues lol. Price and keeper status also an issue.

Hadn’t given any thought to the sub rule if I’m honest but once again you’re thinking ahead. Off the top of my head I’d think the sub would be either a:

      – utility player
      – legs
      – or an obvious 1 for 1 replacement for someone in the 22 who’s underdone or expected to break down

Wouldn’t think there’d be too many talls/KPPs as subs given the wrench that throws into the structure in the event of an injury. Not sure though.

On Allen, I think he goes straight into JK’s spot no questions asked. We need him there and he needs to be developed there. Burning daylight patching holes with him pinch hitting or as a key defender replacement.

Always love Bont. Started him in 2021 and just loved watching him as M1 for half the season. The fact he toughs it out with injuries and carries like a god annoys me in SC though. Plays through anything/everything. Good in that he doesn’t miss games but does dull his sword as a C option at times.

Watch him go 189 in an AAMI game and we all start him though lol.

The real question though: are you starting your boy H. Young?!

      3

      1
    2. Good point. I remember when teams had the green/red vests, there were many second rucks rested for the 4th quarter, replaced with an extra runner

      3

  33. I’m toying with two teams at the moment. With so many 600k defenders, I’m scrimping there and will hopefully be first upgrade targets when some prices fall.

Houston Duncan Salem Yeo Weddle L Ryan …..Wilmot/Chesser

Cripps Blicavs (m/r) Warner Butters Shiel Hopper Ashcroft Blakely……Wardlaw Ginbey Worner (till someone else pops up)

    Marshall Teakle…..Madden

Dunkley Rozee Cunnington Fyfe McLean Phillipou…….Sheezel/Munkara

ITB $165.9 which allows great flexibility for any obvious upgrade. Yeo on watch/hold already. Blicavs means he can go into rucks, and be replaced by a gun mid at some stage….at least thats the plan. Fyfe injury free for first time in years….until he plays a game !!! One/both of Madden/Worner will make way for another rookie…Munkara will play at some stage but is c loop for early part.

    1. I get the thinking Wighty, but it’s just a no.

DEF: Top 4 is obvious. I get not wanting to pay up for all them but need atleast a couple. Houston is a perma tease and not relevant and Duncan age and injury profile writes him off as a starter. Salem and Yeo interesting, but would need to be selected in conjunction with a really strong D1.

MID: Actually like the Cripps pick and Warner is fine if you back him in but Blicavs as M2, Butters as a MID not FWD and Shiel are all nos. Only 1 Top 8 C option there.

RUC: Idk how you think Teakle will play. Lycett back, then Marshall, Georgiades and Dixon FWD. Only way he gets in is a delayed start to one of those talls AND a ripper preseason on his part. Even so, he’d be playing as a key tall and scoring as such.

FWD: Easily your best line. Tick.

I get it’s an experimental team but no need to go all out on every line. Go for reliable premium bones then picks like Salem, Yeo and Warner if vindicated by preseason.

      2

    2. I like a lot of these selections but not all in the same team. You already have a couple of injuries on each line they just haven’t scheduled their physical manifestations yet. You could be lucky and the Yeo, Fyffe, Cunnington, Salem, Butters, Shiel & Maclean injuries get scheduled to occur mostly after the byes but that needs the same sort of luck that you need to win powerball.
A lot of players to be upgraded and none of the top 6 defenders or mids surely your bank is 1.65mil not 165k 🙂

      3

      0
    3. I genuinely can’t tell if this is a troll team or not. You have 4 (!!!) keepers in that team.

Leaving any more than like $30k in the bank is a bad idea and is just putting you on the back foot from round 1.

      5

      1. I have never told a lie/fib in my life…especially on a site like this !! cant have a team that looks like every other team.

        1

        1
        1. Really Wighty ?

The guy actually won last year said he thought he had a very “vanilla’ team going into round 1. He also said it was ok to start with most of the highly owned players and then trade your way to the top from there.

Starting too many Pods is like buying a lotto ticket. There’s are very little chance you go huge, but its most likely you get stuck behind the pack with almost no chance to catch up. Affectively ruining a very long season.

Don’t be afraid to pick highly owned players with the odd Pod here and there. Theres a whole season to trade in different players, but what the use if you already too far back ?

  34. Firstly merry Christmas all hope everybody has been well over the off-season , I’m pumped to have SC back and get back involved amongst the community.

Here is my first crack at it, version 1.

DEF: Stewart Dawson Daicos Goater Mckenner Ginbey (Dean wilmot)

MID: Oliver Steele Bont LDU Hopper Ashcroft Phillips Blakely (Chesser Allan Constable)

    RUCK: English Marshall (Reidy)

FWD: Dunkley Moore Taranto Cunners McLean Macrae (Berry Richards)

    BANK: $45K

    1. Ohhhhh! Hey, Mav. Hope you’ve been well.

Great to see the usual suspects trickling in.

Strong side. LDU and Moore both very unique picks at this stage.

Had LDU late last season, was very fun to watch and took some great strides. Even a modest improvement on his backend 2022 average makes him a keeper.

      2

      0
      1. Very bullish on LDU this year, GD.
#4 pick and has played around that 50 game mark where players will really break out plus I’m a North supporter so makes it a bit of fun for me! plenty of time for it to change but I hope he is there round 1.

        3

        0
        1. Gdday Maverick, like your team which is very similar to mine.
I read/heard on the AFL site last wk that Clarkson wants LDU to improve his FWD craft. Something to keep an eye on in the comming wks

          1

          0
          1. “FWD craft”? What the f*ckity f*ck?

Surely not? The man is pure inside. Would be shocked if anything other than #1 CBA load materialised.

            3

            0
          2. Jeez I hope your taking the p1$$ here willy.. I second GDs statement he is an inside bull and should be played there and nowhere else. Maybe improve his goal scoring ability from the midfield to take his game to another level but not his forward craft.

            0

            0
  35. Hello SC community! Hope you all had a great Xmas. Just at work fiddling around with a team and thought I’d post it for some feedback. I’m not really up to date on rookies and where they’re at but the playing 22 is growing on me. What do you think?
    DEF: Stewart Dawson Daicos
    Goater Ginbey McKenna
    (Dean Chesser)
    MID: Laird Bont Cripps Rozee
    Hopper Ashcroft Phillipou Phillips
    (Taylor Sinn Gilbee)
    RUCK: Witts English (Madden)
    FWD: Dunks Taranto Cameron
    JHF Sheezel Mclean
    (Berry Comben)
Now I know I’ve not named Fyfe but think JHF will be hungrier and less likely to get injured. Mitchell has been floating in and out of my team and as a Pie fan he may still make an appearance but I would have to see how he gels with playing group first. Not starting Clarry is another thing but all going well I can get him hopefully when he loses some coin. Take care all and is good to be back.

    1. Gidday FS,
like the idea of starting a M/F in the MID . I plan to the same with Dunkley
and also start Cameron at R2 with the plan that they will finish as FWDs.
I was always going to start Dunks even if he was MID only
      Good luck for 2023

    2. Hey, FBS.

Hope you’re having a bangin’ summer.

It’s all first drafts and speculation at this stage, but that’s a solid team bar Rozee as a MID – needs to be selected FWD.

JHF a super interesting pick. Looking forward to seeing how deep a MID role he carves out.

      Also love the Cripps selection!

      1. Hey GD. Thanks mate hope you are well too. Yeh JHF is a huge question mark but hoping he puts his head down this year. Thanks for input on Rozee have changed that now!

    1. Yeah on Fyfe.. I highly doubt he will be a cheap keeper like Cogs or Brodie in 2022.

If he can make ~100K and get to his Bye I think this will be a success.

Until we know more about how coaches choose to use the Sub rule , keeping as few rookies on field as possible may be a safer course of action.

      1. Thx Phil

With both Taranto and Hopper off the roster, and other Giants a year older, I’m hedging at this point in the preseason that Callaghan gets some time. Really it’s more of a statement that that position is a “rookie-priced” player. Could go up, but more likely to go down if needed and a clear favourite for a starting on-field mid spot at M7/8.

  37. My first draft which was much derided, was created in my cellar after sampling some of my Christmas gifts !! Here is version 2.

Sicily L Ryan Salem Cole Morris Wilmot (Weddle Chesser)

Neale Cripps LDU Anderson Warner Shiel Ashcroft Blakely (Bennetts Gibney Wardlaw)

    Marshall Cameron (Ratugolea)

Dunkley Rozee Fyfe Windhanger Sheezel McLean (Munkara Madden)

Happy to go light in def. Backing Anderson Warner and LDU to all take the final step to premos, Shiel averaged 110 in his last 9 games of 2022. Very happy with rucks, including Madden providing loop and swing options. Ratugolea sure to get more games after being retained. Fyfe a risk…Windhanger showed enough at end of last year, but might give way if a cheap rookie bobs up around $123k.

$97k in the bank also allows Bennetts to go for a rookie that jumps out.

    Please be gentle

    1. Bont had less games under 100 last season and a higher ceiling if that helps at all.
Plus, Bont was playing injured last season. Macrae is obviously one of the best players you can select on proven history and should do well again. I personally feel Bont goes better this season.

    McKenna AND Wilmot – why?

    1. Hopefully doc gets some mid minutes. Speculation may ramp up once SC officially opens.

Mckenna glorified rookie to make fast cash and ave at leased 70 for a stretch.

      1. My thoughts too Powerplay…..are we related??? LOL
What’s your thoughts on key D1 and D2?

    3. Yeah. Well said, boys.

Idk how people are thinking McKenna is gonna slot into the Lions B22 that easily.

Already got Coleman and Rich well established back there, then Wilmot coming up.

Suppose he could be pushed up the ground to a wing but doubt he’s got that kind of tank having been out of the system for so long and, again, the Lions have an AA wingman bobbing around and use the 2nd wing for the MID rotated out of the CB.

    1. Did suggest more mid time after last season for Daicos. But consider that in his first Afl season he had 6 games over 30 possessions just of the back flank- he’s a gun!

      1

      0
    2. Daicos an extreme talent and in an excellent role blending HB and midfield, the two most SC lucrative roles.

Addition of inside class helps the engine room as a whole. Pies midfield was a, if not THE, major chink in their armour last year. Tried to circumvent losses at stoppage, CBs and in possession differentials with a fast paced, offensive brand but that had its limits. Titch a ready made fix (to an extent) for that problem.

Pies also in need a constant OB. Pendles shifted out, De Goey a flambe, Adams always injured, etc.

So, yeah, if anything Titch improving the side and the engine room will help Daicos.

I’m not hot Daicos for an entirely separate reason though: him. The kid is just f*cking insanely talented. Best first year use in recent years and great decision making. Coaches know that – he’s highly rated externally. For that reason, he’s going to start getting looks. Even saw him cop some hard attention late last year. Guaranteed that happens again in 2023 – more so than other HBs because of how much clout he has.

Negating roles on HBs has increased, so you could say the same about guys like Stewart and Sinclair who both copped attention last season but given Daicos’ role doesn’t contain him to the D50 I can see him copping more attention.

All of this makes a strong case for Sicily. Can’t be tagged.

      1. Gidday GD, some interesting info on MITCHELL
after the Trade period the Collingwood coach was interviewed on AFL.com and said Mitchell was traded for the sole purpose of increasing their CB clearance rate which was the 3rd lowest for 2022. You would think Mitchell will go 110+ this year.

  39. Are there any Hawkians out there with info on their mids roles??? ie who are their HBG’ers and who are their running machines…..

    0

    0
    1. Hawks midfield will be Newcombe & Ward and probably Worpel (no certain to be in best 22).

Expect to see plenty of Wingard & Moore in the guts as well. Maginnes will get a tagging role when needed and Nash will be the ‘big body’.

Karl Amon will be on one wing and it is looking likely that Weddle will get his chance on the other wing with plenty of talk from training runs that is where he will play

  40. Anyone have any idea if Cunningham and Marchbank(both Carlton) could get some game time this year? Possibly be best 22?
Have both shown promise in the past.
    Looking for quick $150k.

    0

    0
    1. Cunningham won’t play at AFL level again and Marchbank is a perennial SC tease. Blues used him to plug their key defensive holes a few times last year but he can’t hack it.

      Wouldn’t bother with either, Tof.

      1. Thanks GD.
Looking like gnr, but the sub has me concerned with 2 many rookies on field.
Keeping a close eye on tippa and coffield when it gets closer.
I think fyfe and hopper are selected on ownership percentage 25-30%+. Which will most likely be the case if named round 1.

        3

  41. Been stirring on Salem.

A write off last year with injury. Comes in priced at a 70 flat average.

Previous seasons: 94.5, 87.3 and 90.5 with steady increases from 70s and 80s. Can basically do 90.

Doesn’t have an intercept game and having unconventionally high use, accumulating and distributing key defenders in May and Lever certainly caps him, but has those random high ceiling games.

Would be starting him knowing he’d be your D6 given it’s obvious who the top 4-5 DEFs are going to be. Got a structure with him at D2 which is affording me some really nice freedom and depth on other lines – seen him in a few other teams here.

    One to watch.

    1. Gidday GD,
I currently have him at D4 behind Stewart, Dawson, Daicos and was only using him as cash cow. After reading your previous commets on Daicos I will have to rethink it. Happy new year.

  42. V2 a unique take on things.

DEF-SICILY, STEWART, DOC, DAWSON, yeo, Mckenna.
    rookie x 2.
MID-holmes, hopper, sheed, fyfe, worpal, mclean, rookie, rookie.
    rookie x 3.
    RUC-Draper, Reeves.
    rookie.
FWD-DUNKLY, CONIGLIO, HEENEY, ROZEE, TARANTO, CAMERON.
    rookie x 2.
50k ITB. For midpricer or ruck adjustments.

DEF-The gap as i see it between top tier and the rest is BIG at this point. Selecting to many cheap defenders hoping they catch up is fraught with danger, these guys produce massive games regularly witch will keep their price up a lot. Rather than trying to time their price drop i’d rather sleep easy.

MID-How many times have you started 4-6 premiums just to have them tagged, swapped position, decline, injured early on etc? You expect 110 point games often and maybe an 80-90 every now and then. But 30-70 point games hurt a lot for 600 k. And while they don’t drop terrible scores often, in total all of your mid picks can do it one after another for a couple of months straight. As do all players but the difference is these guys cost A LOT.
Much like defenders they have huge games which keep their prices up But the POOL OF POSSIBLE TOP 8-10 MIDS IS RATHER BIG compared to other lines Oliver laird and miller are locks for top 1-6 most likely, but if they aren’t as the season progresses ouch.

RUC- No clear 1 and 2. Trade them in and hope for a break out while you see who the 1 and 2 are. So many available at 300-400k easy sideways or rookie downgrade worst case.

FWD- Much of a muchness. Choose the most likely to get big mid minutes (cameron covers the ruck).

-Captains will be the 4 defenders and dunkly cogs etc.
-The mids are wholly interchangeable up to round 1, no locks.
-Only 1, 102k rookie(loophole and ruck link with cameron).
-Only 2 rookies on field both mids. Drop worst mid pricers to bubble rookies.
-Only 10 genuine keepers is an issue but mid rookie and midpricer availability could easily increase that. Oliver or Laird are who I’d select first up due to reliability. Touk has the bye, who knows what bevo will do with bont and so on for all the other mids.

    I had time to kill…

    1

    3
    1. Lol. You always do this, Tof. A radical preseason team, aha. Wasn’t it 8 premo MIDs a few years back?

“MID-How many times have you started 4-6 premiums just to have them tagged, swapped position, decline, injured early on etc?”.

A GREAT point but the solution to that isn’t no MIDs but to separate those who’ll start like a house on fire from those with shitty opening fixtures, tags and injury/role concerns.

I’m currently working on a fixture analysis piece for premo MIDs; fixture, soft/hard opps., tags, venue, past averages, etc.

Hopefully that helps, but honestly the MIDs are pretty intuitive rn. Pick 4 big ones plus Steele at this stage.

      6

      0
      1. I’m convinced the 8 premium mids plus set forget rucks is a very solid basis for a great team.
Just have to nail those exact 10 players out of about 30 options. Which is all but impossible with break out prediction, injuries and tags.
It’s a great theory but not possible to implement.

Every season should hightligh teams taggers and rate them from 1-3.
1-whatever, 2-bad day at the office, 3-game over.
Pin it somewhere with the byes and other season long info.

        1. Don’t quite understand the question, James?

Prices are reflective of the previous year’s average, so it’s a straight line between points scored and dollars.

          1

          0
          1. Sorry G.D. Itrying to break my team into supreme (premo’s, rookies and dangerious / traps ). So looking fo advise on ho low a $ value would you class as prem eg $525,000.
            Thanks

            0
            1. Ah, gotcha.

Yeah, just ask yourself whether they’re a keeper and a shot for Top 8/6 on their line. Ponying up 500k or any set dollar amount doesn’t make a player a keeper or a good pick. Don’t look at it that way.

              3

              0
          2. Hi GD every year this crops up a dollar figure on premos ,and midpricers. Of course almost impossible to do as each line is different but all coaches have different values ,some may call hopper a premo On most sights I have been on premos were 500 plus and mid pricers 250 – 500 Not perfect but at least we were all on the same page I have 10 premos and 3 midpricers so people posting know i have 10 above 500 and 3 between 250-500. At least other coaches can comment with clarity. We had coaches calling Zeibell and that hawk player (escapes me) calling them premos and found it confusing 16 premos but 2 were really not Cheers and good luck NDD

        2. Someone you’d be looking for a 130 every week.
Of course it doesn’t happen but Oliver, Neale, Macrae types your optimistic it will drop every week, knowing its a pretty reasonable ask for them to hit that mark.
I’m not saying you expect them to go 130 every week, but every week they haven’t you know its coming un like other premiums who pleasantly surprise you when the do get that high, Heeney, Merritt, goldy etc.

          -Uber premium (650+)No doubts.
-premium (500-630)After 630 the question is can they maintain it?
          -mid pricer(250-350)
          -stepping stone(200-250)
          -rookie

          Just my take.

  43. Happy New Year all and it’s bloody great to be back after several weeks in rehabilitation for my addiction to the TRADE button….

Here’s what I’ve come up with for a bit of fun and discussion:

D: Sicily, Dawson, Ginbey, McKenna, Weddle, Chesser, Dean, McAsey

M: Oliver, Bont, Macrae, Cripps, Steele, Green, Mitchell, Hopper, Macrae, Constable, Baker

    R: Marshall, Cameron, Madden

F: Dunkley, Fyfe, Allen, McLean, King, Ratugolea, Sinn, Berry

Essentially 2 keepers down back, 7 keepers in the mids (went for durability here), 2 key rucks, both keepers with Cameron to go forward eventually and Dunks carrying the forward line with value/best 22 completing that line. 2k in bank but corrective trades come R3 are pretty easy to do to bring in whichever rookies/cash cows are needed.

Doubt I’ll go with this but I do love that midfield!

    1. Love it, habib. Looks great!

Thin down back the way to go rn and a finished midfield just feels so luxurious! I’ve got a similar structure.

Great to see someone else on Cripps as a starting pick. Gets a proper ruck back, nice opening fixture, niggle free and always starts like a house on fire.

This RMTs at 200 comments so there’s a new one at the top of the site if you want to repost there.

  44. To awkward price.
To expensive to make cash as opposed to other options.
And not likely to be top 10.
300k is a bargain I feel. But at his price he’s in no man’s land. Great D7 if you can pull that off.
If there were 300 he would be a lock.
What are you doing with him, upgrade(Starting him means the cash could have been used to upgrade a mid instead), down-grade(a bubble rookie or coffield, yeo or bows-wasted trade), hold for D1-6 or D-7(not very likely)?

    1. Thanks TOF.

What I was actually trying to say is, IMO, on Brayshaw’s performance in Salem’s role (IMO), they will keep Brayshaw doing what he did well and try to find something else for Salem to do and therefore it may not be worth the SC effort to take him.

  45. Sicily Ryan Salem Wilmot Chesser Wagner…… Cole/Michalanney

Bont Merrett Brayshaw Cripps Steele Ashcroft Wardlaw Phillips…..Blakely/Roberts/Richards

    Marshall Reeves….Keeler r/f and c loop

Dunks Cogs Rozee Cameron McLean Sheezel…..VanRooyen/Munkara

    $44.1k itb

Not paying up for more than 1 600k def

Can wait for all of Laird/Satan/Neale to have their inevitable falls..happy that I have five mid keepers that will be top 10 or thereabouts. Brayshaw to go Uber.

Just can’t get myself to go either of Grawndy until their roles are know. Reeves a stepping stone, but not sold on him totally.

    Happy with fwds…provide great flexibility.

As always, rookies subject to change.
