    • Love it! Seems a similar strategy to mine where we’re loading up in DEF where the rookies are weakest. Love the Jackson pick, had him all pre-season but Freo seemingly want to give Reidy the #1 Ruck role which scared me off a bit, but he will still score fine.

      • Yeah bit nervous about Jackson but should get the odd CBA as ruck I hope and has been at stoppages sometimes even as another mid because of his versatilityand size.. think I’ll back him in for the good of the rest of my overall side.

    • Like the Jackson/Reid inclusion for the flex cover but relies on Boyd getting a game week in week out – not sure how guaranteed this is ?

      • Yep big risk. If Boyd gets dropped i all of a sudden lose my flex and have 2 donuts in my 31 players. But I think boyd will play regularly. They love him at the saints and dominated SANFL, allows RoMo to play more forward especially if kings out.

But yes it’s risky for sure.

  2. Alright gang, back for season 2025, got a bit of a weird structure focused around value and rookies, as they appear to be rather weak this year, especially in the backline. As such I’ve tried to load up with value picks/premos on lines where they are weakest, meaning my mids are much weaker than most teams, but the sacrifice has to come from somewhere.

    DEF: H. Sheezel, D. Zorko, J. Short, H. Perryman, SDK, Z. Reid, J. Prior, J. Leake.

    • Don’t like the idea of 4 rucks in the team as it gets rid of said flexibility. Will work well if all ruckmen play and all 3 will score well but if one needs to miss a week or two here or there you’ll have to cop it (which isn’t that bad considering its still best 22). Also, that defence is very risky with poor rookies (due to lack of them) – will be interesting to see who is named R1…

  7. Gone deep in defence, like most don’t think there’s much depth in the quality of rookies available there – cheaper options may become available when the like of Coleman and Mills start to play, but they may also come at an awkward stage of the season. Have done countless drafts of this and spent a lot of time watching games back from preseason.

DEF: Sheezel, Holmes, Short, Robert’s, Perryman, Leake, Reid, Allan
Gone a bit deeper here, and don’t love Allan, but surely he can’t go worse than the preseason game.

MID: Daicos, Serong, Merrett, Oliver, O’Sullivan, O’Driscoll, Tsatas, LAshcroft, Langford, Sheldrick, Knevitt
Gone with a few premos to start the year. Oliver does make me nervous, and am considering Day instead – but the high ownership of Oliver eases it a bit.

    RUCK: Xerri, TDK, Boyd
Xerri is a beast, and TDK should start the year strong without Pitt.

FWD: JHF, Macrae, Smith, Daniel, Kako, Hewett, Erasmus, Davidson
I am still tossing up between JHF and Rankine, but the injury for Butters lifted the ceiling of JHF – both are clearly top 6 forwards and will be there come seasons end. I am also tossing up between Smith and Sanders – not 100% on either, but both have some value.

    FLEX: Stone
Not sure on the best play here, but using this purely as a cash cow – wouldn’t have mind getting Flynn in (provided he was named as solo ruck, but am short on cash to do so).

Feel free to rip it apart.

    • 2 of Kako, Hewett, Erasmus Davidson on field is a concern. With money sitting in the bank consider upgrading one to powell pepper. Erasmus most likely needed to to be fixed.
The moneys just sitting there might as well use it for most likely a 60-75 average on field.

    • Would probably recommend trying to get one of those bench rookies into the flex spot over Stone. I think if you sub Stone to Erasmus then swap him with one of the higher priced mid rookies. It also opens up a fwd/mid swing for you to use later as needed

  10. I see a lot of teams running up to 4 rookies/sub $200k on-field in the middle, usually a combination of Tsatas, FOS, NOD, Lashcroft, Sheldrick or Knevitt.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t do it I mean who cares where the points come from. 3 Premo mids and 3 premo defenders is almost the same as 2 premo mids and 4 premo defenders these days
The major issue is that some of them are hi-risk sub candidates and just 1 early game as sub destroys the income generation of a 200k player.
Imagine if all 4 of your on-field mid rookies were starting subs or subbed out early in a role share arrangement

I have 3 on-field NOD, Tsat, Sheldrick and it makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Some of these players scored very well in the practice games BUT that is not a reliable indicator of their scoring in the real thing. 70-80 ave over 6 weeks would be above par

Tsatas – Merrett spent a lot of time at half back, he wont do that in real games so Tsatas CBA’s will probably be significantly less. Also, his disposal under real pressure is atrocious.

FOS – 200k is a lot for a guy who might ave 60- 70 for 3 weeks and then get a go in the VFL. Watch the game his SC score was extremely generous. Hi Sub risk

NOD- worrying that he was unsighted for an entire qrtr and his CBA’s came when regular midfielders had left the game. Great kick though and IF they regularly use him on the way out of defence he could be a great scorer.
Freo seem to be very fluid with their ‘other’ mids and half backs and 1 mistake could see him in the wafl and one of their other bargains in his spot.

Lashcroft – I watched the game twice and still don’t know where his recorded stats came from maybe he’s Bont MK2. Hi sub risk

Sheldrick is about the safest but I doubt that he’ll have the same role that he played after Gulden broke. I think he’ll probably get a more defensive role and rowbottom will be released.

Knevitt- Cats did this to me last year with ?? Clarke? anyway they talked him up all season gave him a go in some pretend games and then made him sub

Knevitt is also in my team atm no Kako, with all other rookies riced under 130k

Would very much appreciate any feedback on my latest team –

DEF: Sheez, Holmes, Short, Roberts, Perryman, Reid (Leake, Charleson)
MID: Neale, Naicos, Anderson, Rozee, Oliver, Tsatas, Lashcroft, Sheldrick (Knevitt, Boxshall, Day-Wicks)

    FLEX: Erasmus.

Went NWM down to Roberts, sacrificed reliability in the Flex and went with a few bench rooks with less/no CG prospects to get Dawson up to Neale. Not sure at all that it was the right choice…
I feel like It’s been a lot trickier to get a starting team I’m happy with this year!

    Thanks!

    • Yes, but its generally the same advice over and over this year. Fix up your defence.
Look at teams with a positive ratio and see where your team lacks by comparison.
Do some diligence on injured players or how many you have missing a single bye round.

If you state your new, well that’s a different story.

    • Really good team.

      5 good C/VC options

I like the ‘big 4’ premium rookies in the midfield. I can see one or two of them being in your team until the byes, hopefully pumping out decent scores. Plus you can always go one of them down to a Sheldrick if you need some cash or correction

Petracca is a bold selection, and might be genius if he get DPP round 6. I’m just liking Rozee for slightly cheaper price because of Ports games and no Butters. Plus already have Oliver from Melb.

Maybe change Boyd to A Reid for DPP, plus handcuff him to Flynn.

Maybe a Hall instead of Boxshall for a FWD/MID swinger

    • Great question. I want 2 out of either Short, Robert’s or Perryman.

At moment I’m leaning to Short because he is the man down back for Tigers with most of the (many) kick outs. Where Robert’s has some competition from Blakey, Rampe and Lloyd.

Perryman looks to be entrenched in the Collingwood midfield as Daicos’s offsider.

Seriously I don’t know how to split them

I think he’ll be onball more than not and should be right for a 90-95av at least.
Happy for him to be my D6 or last def upgrade.
Plus, I’ve been burnt by Roberts and Short before so might as well give someone else the chance to do the same.

My thinking with Short: IMO last season was an outlier, especially with the emergence of Rioli having a career best year.

I have struggled with choosing between Roberts and Perryman. Keen to hear some views.

Not the biggest fan of relying on an unproven Smith, but getting him in instead of Rankine allows me to bring in Neale and Holmes.

I liked Nank as a POD, but TDK’s price tag is hard to ignore.

Hewett doubtful apparently. I do like the Rozee/FOS replacement as suggested and play Kako on field fwd. Got to have Davidson so thats an easy decision to replace Sanders anyway (then you can see who is better between Davidson and Kako to play on field).
Dunno about Langford, think I rather just Knevitt there and maybe make sure you have a DPP (Hall, Angove) to possibly swing Kako into the mids if needed.
And Lastly Allan? Seeing a lot of people still keeping the faith in him. Not me after -12SC. OConnell if named (or even Trainor as an emergency, you need a loop anyway). You can fix that up by Round 5.
      Enjoy!

    • 1st blank – Clark or NWM (both QB roles for their team. I’d lean towards Clark if you had the extra $$$, looked great in that pre-season game, again has that QB role out of the backline for Dockers. With JL saying they’re steering away from that chip possession game out of the backline that will benefit Clark with his line breaking ability. He was also everywhere in that praccy match and he scored 120 with a DE of 67%

I’d take both Short & Perryman – I don’t trust Roberts role still with players like Rampe, Lloyd and Blakey down there. I’ve just used some extra money to bring Short in over Roberts. Short has the QB role at tigers and will demand the ball in his hands down there. Will take all of the kick ins as well. Perryman is a beast at this price, firmly cemented as that defensive midfielder behind Daicos and should be a nice stepping stone to a big premo.

Ashcroft over Cerra. Cerra does look great but he has paper thin hammies. Has done 5 since 2023… Ashcroft in my eyes is set to push firmly into that that premo territory this year (also if mot a keeper, will again be a nice stepping stone to a fallen premo)

2nd blank – Boxshall, should line up for saints R1, looked great in pre-season games.

      • the Short, Roberts or Perryman debate is un-solvable. I can’t split them, so i’ve decided to build a team with all three at D4, D5 & D6 (just forget about defence rookies). Will need Gawn to go to Flynn. doesn’t look too bad.

        • What would be your plan if Flynn goes down with injury in first 1-2 rounds? I worry with Flynn at an R2 position as you’d need to burn a premo to a rookie to him back up to a solid ruckman. Flex position you can get away with as you flick him down to a rookie that’s starting hot.

          What are your thoughts?

    • what do you think SPP can do this year? is he in your team because you had no more cash, or was he one of your first picked?

Rookie priced, he is hard to ignore? Do you have anything to share?

      • To be completely honest with you i had a rookie in that spot originally but with some leftover cash i decided to upgrade to SPP instead. He could easily be downgraded again if there is a great fwd rookie I’m missing. Was just more a premium rookie choice that I can upgrade throughout the season.

        • IMO a 3/4 fit spp has an average of 75+ and with that start price will make 200+ k I’m just not prepared to miss that much near certain cash. It’s not as if you have to wonder if he’s best 22 or if he’ll keep his role in the team. It’s fitness only and excepting the acl not really injury prone. No Brainer for me

His ave will more likely be 60-70
If he can ave 70 for 6 weeks it will be a win but there are other forwards +-$50k who will make more cash

      • Always had a bit of white line fever SPP. Is in the leadership group this year for the first time so reckon he pulls his head in and gets down to work. Agree it’s all about him staying on the park. On the flipside we have heaps of fwds this year. Too many and you can’t fit everyone in. I would take him before Lynch and Berry. Vs Kako is line ball (DPP tips Kako over). $119kers are in a different category so can’t compare to them. SPP +cash vs Garcia is a very close call as well. That’s my dilemma at the moment to fund defence if def rookies don’t turn up.

Think the team is reasonably strong in the DEF (2 out of 3 of Short, Perryman, Roberts to choose from), bit weak in the MID, happy with RUC, FWD pretty cookie cutter, but ok.

Subject to rookie selections, considering the following for “final” team

  40. Lots interesting reading here in relation to Short, Perryman and Roberts and playing one rookie down back, etc.

My current side is below and I really like the structure, rookies subject to change obviously

No FOS but North have a lot of SC mouths to feed so I am happy to pass. Josh Daicos at M5, who like Nic Martin in 2024, should gain DPP after R6. He is basically my choice over Short, Perryman or Roberts and I think he will be better than any of them.

Happy to roll with 2 playing rookies down back in light of the above, so long as enough of them play. The Flex will replace the worst weekly spud anyway if Allan or whoever don’t improve but he for one really should.

Def- Sheezel, Clark, NWM, Holmes, Allan, Reid (Leake, Trainor)

Mid – N Daicos, Brayshaw, Rozee, Oliver, J Daicos, Tsatsas, L Ashcroft, Sheldrick (Hall, Camporeale, Boxshall)

    Ruck – Xerri, TDK (Sims)

For – JHF, Macrae, Daniel, Kako, Hewett, Davidson (Erasmus, Stone)

    Flex – Jackson

You live & die by it & hopefully 14 keepers including Macrae but excluding Daniel

He loves a tackle and Ross does like to play the young ones and give them plenty of opportunities. Just think with butters out and a nice opening draw SPP could start well and a good score will rocket his cash gen while Garcia could be a slow build

It was pointed out to me the other day that he doesn’t go so hot away from home but hoping/thinking the aforementioned will allow him to overcome that deficiency.

  44. Latest after Bice fell through and half of R0 was scratched:

DEF: Sheezel, Zorko, Holmes, McKercher, Roberts & Perryman [Reid, Leake]

MID: Neale, Brayshaw, Anderson, Satan, NOD, L. Ashcroft, Knevitt & Camporeale [Reid, Hall, Boxshall]

    RUC: Nank & Flynn [Reidy]

FWD: JHF, Rankine, Macrae, Daniel, SPP & Davidson [Stone, Edwards]

    FLX: Kako

Can now ride all of Zorko, Neale and Anderson comfortably even though I probably would’ve stuck fat with the bye anyway.

Against my better judgement, I have Satan instead of Ashcroft in a light midfield.

Switched to a 6 deep DEF line. Not going to play the game of Paton, Prior, trying to force rookies that aren’t there. With Cats no bye, I jumped back on my boy Holmes.

Ruck line will be a bit controversial. Not trying to be flouncy. Legit think Flynn can hold it down at R2 and Nank should tear shit up early.

Can pull the lever of Reidy to Boyd and make Kako Tsatas/FOS. We’ll see.

SPP in leadership group this year, Port have a pisstake of a fixture, should put in work at stoppages. Optimistically, 75~ early on.

    • I’m wondering if there’s been a broad over correction in defence. I see Paton, Leake, Reid, Allan, Trainor and O’Connell as likely next week and more expensive Prior and Cleary also in the mix. I’m sticking with Allan despite last week’s performance.

I had McKercher most of pre season but his role has scared me off. He is a ball magnet though so could still be viable.

See you’ve changed your tune on Flynn 🙂 fair enough I think and he’s my flex for now.

Tsatas should easily outscore Kako who will be inconsistent. If Boyd plays think that change makes sense. Good luck!

I’ve got the same Rucks. TDK without the Pit is a no brainer.

Your def is risky without Sheezel. I think at least one uber is essential each line. Holmes could fill the void.

Plan is to reassess after 6 weeks, is he going well enough to stay as flex for ruck back up or does he get traded to Xerri who starts his easy run in round 6

        • Liked your earlier teams Derek but I have got to be honest, this one has baffled me. Disjointed would be a word I’d use. Maybe it just looks that way because JHF is in the mids? Very Fwd centric. I would say yes too many mid prices. Can’t really see who you would captain? I can’t do Flynn off just one game and then put him in one of the most important spots in R2. Flex maybe and chain him to A.Reid like your earlier plan sounded a better idea.

Can’t knock the players selected just the way it looks on paper You can prob sort it out over the bye rounds which players perform or not so hey it may work out in the end.

Downgrade Garcia as there’s a few fwd rookies around and Short to Stuart? As you said a lot of best 18 early.

I note SPP seems to be popular but I’m happy with Lynch at similar price

  49. Tinkered and tooled around a lot and barring anything crazy during todays game looks like this is the round 1 team (rozee injury also a close watch)

Back: Sheezel, Whitfield, Clark, NWM, Holmes, Short (Reid, Leake)

Mid: Day, Satan, O’Sullivan, O’Driscoll, Tsatas, Draper, L Ashcroft, Knevitt (Hewett, Erasmus, Camper who had a good pre-season game)

    Ruc: Xerri, Boyd (T Sims)

Fwd: The horny one, Rankine, Jackson, Macrae, B Smith, Daniel (SPP, Davidson)
    FLEX: H Garcia

Now let’s first address the glaring hole, and that is r2. Not sold on anyone outside of being a Xerri truther from his beginning, Voss seems to love 2 rucks so tdk is only viable until pitto comes back in my opinion. Gawn old, English sharing, Marshall injured. Tempted by Flynn but his body and job security are a similar risk to the bloke who’s only 99k. Hence Sims dpp at r3, can swing Jackson to r if really needing a stop gap because Boyd didn’t impress in pre season and Marshall looks to be right to go r1, though whispers are they’ll play him a bit more forward. Very much a wait and see.

Stacking the back line due to the defensive rookies looking very thin and with all the premo injuries going my midfield looks as though someone in the office SuperCoach team put it together based on pick %.
Rozee turned into Day due to his training injury and Day having a Friday night out but I’m very sceptical about both their ability to stay on the park.
A bit of high risk high reward going on but my back line and forward line are better than yours.
In theory make cash with the mid rookies, upgrade to the uber promos like butters and Bont once they come back from injury and knock the rust off, add a second ruck who’s performing (not caring about the byes) and won’t even need to trade a forward or defender. Right guys? Right….?

    • Definitely a long term view with that midfield. If all the rookies pay off you’re going to be cashed up to the rafters but their scoring will be up and down so could cost early wins.

As you say this is high risk high reward. Go with your gut and good luck!

Can cut either holmes or nwm for Roberts pretty safely now.
Also can cut Baily smith and put SPP on the field.
Could cut Day put garcia into the middle and get gawn. Even if your not sold on Gawn he can be traded to anyone later on. Now looks like he will have a very favorable match up against Gws.

  50. Hopefully this is my final team..

I haven’t seen Perryman play yet so will keep an eye on him today. Humphries is next to him for good reason. His best is right up there and priced to make some $$ upgrade to uber later. GBD is spot on re backline, not a lot of rookie options.

Mids are biggest risk but I’m happy to go with FOS, NOD, little Ash and Boxshall. Bench is good enough for back up.

C’mon Flynn you good thing. If he falls apart Jacko can move in.

Forwards are solid IMO, happy enough for now.

Def – Sheez, Holmes, Sicily, Roberts, Humphries, Perryman (Reid Leake)

Mid – Daicos, Dawson, Oliver, W Ashcroft, FOS, NOD, L Ashcroft, Boxshall (Knevitt, Hall, Camps)

    T.u average 100 plus
    T.d average under 100

I really am not sure how to rate him but most teams have him. In the practice match he scored 138 but was against keefe as ruckman. Today Cameron scored 164 against keefe.
Blues opening 5 rounds he rucks against
Nank, meek, English, Cameron and Flynn.

There is a chance he could lose money in first 5 weeks

  55. What are everyone’s thoughts on starting Zorko?

His fixtures for the first 2 months of the season are genuinely amazing for defenders and he won’t cop any attention at all. My only concern is his age, although I was concerned last season and he played every game. Very very tempted to start at D2. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s average is close to 120 after the first couple of months. Anyone else with me???

  56. So…
    Whitfield + Ash
    Ryan + clarke.

These 4 just play kick to kick.

If both pairs take turns having a good then average game i.e one goes120+ and the other goes 100+ on average that’s 220+ on average per week for defenders.

But your not selecting them on their own merrits but as a pair. And since their on the same team and boost each others score your covering the chance of most weeks 2 defenders going large whilst the other 2 produce good floor scores.
As opposed to players from different teams.
Gonna see what happens with this set up. Sheezle as D1 and Roberts as d6. Proven performer and break out player on either side
    Of the awesome foursome.

Slight concern for mine over the age however from all reports looking fit as ever in the pre season. Soft draw to start, Richmond & Westcoast in the first month. Solid for a top 8 mid once again this year?

    1k in the bank

I’ve tried to focus on role certainty and I’ve applied the ‘Luke Hodge theory’ of 4th year being the most likely year to breakout.

Backs: Sinn isn’t locked but if he’s playing HB probably worth a try or he could go to a cheaper rookie if R1 selections pan out that way. I’ve tinkered with Perryman but not sure his role when De Goey returns

Mids: I note a few teams have gone with a 4/4 structure but I’ve stuck with 4/midpricer/3. I’ve picked Parker as a keeper with 10 seasons to support the argument. He wasn’t always first choice mid at Swans but always scored well. Always been on Day but Callaghan is new, although I’ve had him on watchlist. Even when Green returns think he’ll be ok.

Rucks: Chopped and changed this the most. Part of me wants to go rogue and have Bryan R2 but playing safer for now. I know I don’t have Xerri or Gawn but can’t have everyone

Fwd: S Darcy is my POD. I know he’ll be up and down but with flex and early byes I’m happy to punt and if it doesn’t come off I don’t think he’s going to leak much cash.

Flex: Flynn’s been in, out, in, out, now back in. Let’s hope his body holds up!

    • Sinn – is cheap, but we don’t know what the Port defense is going to look like. I think he will play.

Day – had a great game Round 0, but he isn’t going to kick 3 goals and get 6FF every game. Was only the 4th midfielder after Worpel, Newk and Nash. With Worpel out won’t surprise me that Mckenzie comes in ahead of Day in the CBA’s.

Callaghan – prefer him over Day and AShcroft. Seems to be clearly one of the main midfielders, even with Green back he will be bulk midfield. If he starts to lay a few tackles he will be a great scorer. I’m staying away mainly because of the Bye.

S darcy – it would be better if he had a decent midfield kicking it down his throat. he does get a nice match up the first two weeks.

      • Sinn is the shakiest out of all of them. Trainor is picked to play but I don’t know a lot about him other than he did ok with limited game time in the practice match. But might do a swap to save cash.

I’ve been on Day and Darcy all pre season so sticking with my gut. I know you like Rozee but hopefully for our sakes they both work out!

  63. Think this is my final team *narrator voice* it was not his final team

But anyway, I have decided I’m going for all three of the popular mid pricers down back and shifted the team heaps to get Neale now that he doesn’t have the early bye. Brayshaw finished last year incredibly so hoping that continues and Steele is my favourite player and his baseline of around 110 feels plenty safe enough.

  69. Changed my usual sturcture here. but quite settled doing this.

Def- Sheezel, Zorko, Short, Roberts, Perryman, Paton. (Reid and Leake)
Bit stronger here than some teams, would rather have a defence like this with the scarce amount of defensive rookies at our disposal.

Mids- Neale, Day, Oliver, Callaghan, NOD, Tsatas, L.Ashcroft, Knevitt (Hewett, Camporele, Boxshall)
Seems like a pretty normal midfield to most sides, especially following callaghan and Days, Performances over the weekend.

    Rucks- Gawn and Xerri (Boyd)
A standard pairing with Gawns facing SDK and Keeffe in the first four weeks, I’ve made a significant push to bring him in.

FWD- JHF, Macrae, Sanders, Daniel, Berry, Davidson. (Erasmus and Stone)
Couldn’t afford a kako with the current set up, But seems like this is gonna be similar to most forward lines.

Flex—TDK, this is potentially a lot different from most people’s flex, but my thought with the flex position is that I potentially wanted a Ruck in that slot anyway by the end of the season, so why not just fill the void now with a relatively stronger side around him?

Perryman could have a season like George Hewitt did when he went to Carlton or he could just be middle of the road like he has been for seven years.
Smith could turn the clock back a couple of years and average over 100 or he could plod along around 80 and get injured.

    • Sam Lalor (MID $203k), who was taken as Pick 1, was training impressively with Richmond before fracturing his jaw and entering concussion protocols following an incident in a match simulation against West Coast.

Sam Lalor completed today’s entire Richmond main session.
Didn’t require the non-contact cap and was in full tackling and match sim, playing for A side.

He is a classy player but he is priced to reflect that. The question mark is how much the injury has hampered his preparation? I doubt Richmond would be playing their prize recruit if he wasn’t ready.

Makes an interesting conundrum with cheaper options available. Will class prevail?
