Reserves Rookie Review – 2024 Recap Part 2

Written by Alza on July 31 2024

Welcome to Part 2 of the Reserves Rookie Review Recap for 2024. I have included all players that have played less than 3 games this season. Hopefully the decent rookies are held back until next season but like previous years there will definitely be some debuts in the later rounds. Any questions or extra information please let me know in the comments.

Luker KentfieldFWD102.424/7
Kyah Farris-WhiteRUC123.910/4

2025 – Although they haven’t been their best this year the Dees still have some nice depth in the VFL. Fullarton has been used as a 2nd ruck but doesn’t seem to be in the plans with the coach for now although he has played well all year. Verall is the backup ruck to Gawn (or 3rd behind Petty) and averaged 20 hitouts and 4 clearances. Brown is a tackling machine with 7 a game including 24 last week. Jefferson has kicked 26 goals this year and Schache has kicked 14.

NORTH MELBOURNE

2025- Maley and Free have shared the ruck duties with Free the main ruck in the VFL. Harvey played 2 games last year but hasn’t managed a game this year. Sellers has kicked 26 goals in 13 games but struggled in his 2 AFL games early in the year when North were at their worst.

Josh GibcusDEF150.70/0
Liam FawcettFWD117.30/0
Mate ColinaR/F123.90/0

2025 – Blight and Gray were mid-season draftees this year and both played well. Blight won’t be rookie priced next year after 2 decent games in the AFL. Gray was in great form before injuring his hamstring but could be an option for next year. Hayes-Brown was a category B rookie that started the year not even in the VFL but with injuries he came in and averaged 34 hitouts and 5 clearances in 6 games. Gibcus has missed most of the year with an ACL injury in Rd. 1, he will be priced around $200-210k next season for those willing to give him another go.

Liam O'ConnellDEF102.446/14
Matthew AllisonFWD123.946/12
James Van EsDEF123.90/0

2025 – Campbell is a bully in the VFL with his size and experience too good for most at that level. Heath has once again improved his output this season with 22 hitouts, 14 touches and 4 clearances his averages with 11 goals. Hall was in excellent form all year and was a mid-season draftee but is currently injured.

2025 – Cleary and Mitchell have been standout performers in the VFL all season as they hit most stat lines each week but haven’t had much opportunity with the AFL side playing so well. Magor has been good in defence with 19 touches and 4 marks a game. There are a few other players like Kirk and Edwards who may come into consideration next year but may need to improve their scoring to be relevant.

Kelsey RypstraFWD102.446/3
Jordan CroftFWD144.339/10

2025 – Busslinger has been super consistent and unlucky not to have debuted, he is a player that is likely to play this year to push his price up for next year which may be at a new club. He has averaged 21 touches, 8 marks and 5 rebounds this year as a key defender. Cleary has had a good year in defence with 19 touches and 6 marks a game. Clarke has kicked 17 goals in 12 games as well as averaging 5 tackles.

2025 – Strachan won’t be rookie priced next year but has shown his experience to have an excellent year in the SANFL averaging 35 hitouts and 16 touches a game. Ryan has had a great year down back using the ball at 88% for his 18 touches a game. Parnell injured his shoulder in Rd. 4 and hasn’t played since, he will be cheap next season and one to consider.

2025 – Jackson spent the 1st half of the year injured but has played well in his 7 games with 18 touches, 6 tackles and 4 clearances a game. Visentini won’t be rookie priced next year but has had a good year and has averaged over 40 hitouts a game since his 2 AFL games this year. Clurey has played well this year as he has shared his time down back and on the wing to average 17 touches at 91% and 7 marks a game. Lorenz has had a great year with 19 touches and 4 marks a game and at this stage will be the standard rookie price next year.

WAFL

Josh CorbettFWD145.80/0
Oscar McDonaldDEF123.90/0

2025 – Lots of injuries from Freo’s rookies with 6 players playing 2 WAFL games or less. Reidy has had an excellent year but is unfortunately behind 2 very solid rucks. He averaged 44 hitouts and 5 tackles this year. Simpson has been fairly consistent this year and will have a slightly elevated price next year. Knobel had 46 hitouts in his 2nd game in an interrupted year.

WEST COAST

Clay HallMID117.369/13

Rhett BazzoDEF178.848/2
Archer ReidR/F117.347/11
Harry BarnettR/F123.946/11

2025 – Hall has had a good year with 19 touches and 4 tackles a game, he is a chance to debut this year. Johnston has averaged 15 touches and 4 marks and will probably feature more next season. Barnett and Livingstone shared the ruck duties with 17 and 12 hitouts a game respectively.

Of the players that have featured in the recaps over the last 2 weeks here are the players that I am going to keep a close eye on for next season. A rough starting point of players that have all shown enough scoring ability to be worth an early selection next year if they find themselves in the Rd. 1 lineups. Let me know who your early 2025 rookie picks are.

H. Smith, L. Beecken, J. Binns, B. Wilson, S. El-Hawli, Z. Reid, A. Roberts, M. Hardie, T. Clohesy, G. Stevens, J. Fahey, H. Rowston, C. Stone, J. Bennetts, T. Fullarton, K. Brown, C. Gray, M. Hall, M. Heath, C. Cleary, C. Mitchell, J. Magor, J. Busslinger, C. Clarke, P. Parnell, O. Ryan, H. Jackson, W. Lorenz, C. Hall – Bold players were in this section last year*
