Reserves Rookie Review – Recap Part 1

Written by Alza on July 24 2024

Welcome to Part 1 of the Reserves Rookie Review Recap for 2024. I have included all players that have played less than 3 games this season. Hopefully the decent rookies are held back until next season but like previous years there will definitely be some debuts in the later rounds. Any questions or extra information please let me know in the comments.

Generally discounts have worked like this and they will be similar to this next year with some exceptions.

30% discount for rookies that have played 1 or 2 games that averaged between 50 and 70, 20% if they averaged under 50 and 40% if they averaged over 70. 3 games discount is 20% if they averaged under 50 and 30% for over 50. 4 and 5 games played is 20% and 6 and 7 games played is 10%.

So a player playing 1 game can ruin his price for next season as we have seen with many players this year. Toby Conway is a great example, in Round 24 last year he played 1 game scoring 46. This saw his price for 2024 start at $180,000 which was a 30% discount on his price for an average of 46.

Kalin LaneRUC123.947/12
Zane ZakostelskyD/R117.335/9
Carter MichaelDEF123.929/3

2025- Smith has had an excellent year with his debut last week, very hard forward line to break into even as a 2nd ruck. Prior is a back-up option and will likely play this week to see him out of rookie contention next year. Beecken is a 23 year old mid-season draftee that has performed very well since coming to the Lions. McLachlan has kicked 9 goals in his 6 games for the Lions since the mid-season draft.

Rob MonahanFWD102.431/15
Matthew CarrollDEF102.40/0

2025 – Binns has had another great year in the VFL but just can’t break into the side, if he can, he will be a decent option next year. Lord was a mid-season draftee that has played well this year with 12 VFL games across North and Carlton with averages of 20 touches, 6 tackles and 3 clearances. Wilson was popular in pre-season and will be again next year. He has had a few small injuries but still played 11 games with 20 touches his standard game.

COLLINGWOOD

Josh EyreDEF102.440/5
Oscar SteeneR/F123.913/1

2025 – Begg was ruled out for the year about Rd 8 which is unfortunate as he would have featured this year. Allan and parker have both played AFL this year and could be decent options next year if they remain on the list. If this year is anything to go by Collingwood rookies should get some games again next year.

Jayden DaveyFWD123.939/14
Jaiden HunterFWD123.90/0

2025 – El-Hawli looks like a great player and will play AFL when he is fit again, for our sides let’s hope that is in finals or next year. Reid has been very unlucky with injuries, he’ll be the same price next year let’s hope he can stay fit. Roberts and Hayes have both been good this year with Roberts a small/medium defender averaging 21 touches with 4 marks and Hayes a key defender with 19 touches and 6 marks.

William RowlandsM/F102.455/13
Jy FarrarDEF205.553/10
Sandy BrockDEF123.943/13

2025 – Tsitas has been a strong performer in the VFL once again regularly filling all stat lines but he hasn’t managed to get into the AFL side. Faulkhead has had a decent year averaging 20 touches. Farrar has been playing forward this year and kicked 16 goals.

GEELONG

Oliver WiltshireM/F117.337/4
Mitchell EdwardsRUC117.335/3
Phoenix FosterFWD123.934/12

2025 – Geelong have a lot of strong performers once again in the VFL. Hardie and Clohesy have been excellent averaging nearly 30 touches and filling all of the stat lines. Great options if they stay cheap enough which with Clohesy playing last week he may not if he stays in the side. Stevens and Jeka have had good years averaging around 20 touches a game with Stevens in the middle and Jeka down back.

GWS

Phoenix GothardFWD157.870/10
Max GruzewskiFWD123.965/12
Nathan WardiusFWD102.462/5
Cooper HamiltonMID178.853/8

2025 – Fahey and Madden were having great years before getting injured. Fahey could be an option next year but plays a similar role to a few. Madden is behind Briggs and maybe Preuss in the ruck. Leake was injured early in the year but has been very good on his return averaging 21 touches and 8 tackles. Rowston was also having a great year before being injured a couple of weeks ago and should be a good option next year. Derksen in defence has been solid with 20 touches and 7 marks a game. Stone has kicked 16 goals this year and Gruzewski has kicked 25.

William McCabeDEF126.339/3
James BlanckDEF202.30/0

2025 – Phillips has played well this year and a little unlucky not to have played more but is a back-up key defender for them. Bennetts has had a good year with 17 touches and 5 marks a game but was injured on the weekend. Scaife was a mid-season draftee that has kicked 7.7 in his 4 games before being injured.

Thank you all for reading the Reserves Review in 2024, part 2 of the recap will be out at the usual time next Wednesday.
