Reserves Rookie Review – Round 14

Written by Alza on June 19 2024

3 of the 4 bye weeks are through now. Teams will start to lock in their best 22’s with a lot of injured players to return over the next few weeks. Makes it that much harder for the rookies to get an extended run but anything can happen if they play well.

LEGEND – Name, AF Score (Ave/Games)

SANFL

ADELAIDE

Curtin 79 (72/8) – decent game and a chance to get a few games to end the year

PORT ADELAIDE

Sweet 113 (109/4) – excellent game as he dominates in the SANFL. Visentini was Port’s emergency on the weekend though so seems he is 3rd in line for now

VFL

BRISBANE

Tunstill 110 (105/9) – on the fringe but having a great year in the VFL

Prior 108 (101/9) – dominating but is a back-up option for now

Smith 93 (90/8) – kicked 3 goals again in his push for a debut

CARLTON

Bye

COLLINGWOOD

Bytel 121 (91/7) – excellent game with 36 touches, 7 marks and 6 clearances. Pies will be getting players back after their bye unfortunately for the rookies

ESSENDON

Bye

GOLD COAST

GEELONG

GWS

Rowston 115 (95/10) – returned to his best with 27 touches, 6 marks, 7 tackles and 8 clearances

Stone 78 (77/8) – no goals this week but 21 touches and 7 marks

Wehr 92 (95/2) – back into the VFL and played well with 22 touches and 8 marks

HAWTHORN

Hustwaite 101 (86/7) – great game with 32 touches and 9 clearances as he pushes for a recall

Bennetts 103 (81/9) – kicked 2 goals from 21 touches and 8 marks, don’t like his chances of a lengthy stint although playing well

MELBOURNE

Bye

NORTH MELBOURNE

Lazzaro 104 (110/4) – continues to play well in the VFL with 31 touches and 8 marks. Cheap enough to be an option with an extended run

Duursma 106 (80/2) – he will probably play a few games in the VFL where he will play well and develop. 25 touches, 4 clearances ad 3 goals in a great game

RICHMOND

Blight 74 (75/3) – not sure what his chances are but he’s playing well, 18 touches and 9 marks

Smith 67 (77/10) – 20 touches and 6 marks in a solid game trying to get back into the side

ST. KILDA

Garcia 83 (104/6)– stuck in the VFL now but continues his pressure with 10 tackles and 18 touches

SYDNEY

Mitchell 72 (90/8) – decent game hitting all the stat lines, 24 touches and a goal

Cleary 66 (85/10) – not his best score but still managed 19 touches

Warner 77 (57/3) – returned from injury with 21 touches and 4 tackles

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Busslinger 88 (82/10) – getting really close now, 22 touches and 9 marks

Garcia 107 (130/4) – returned to the VFL and did everything possible to come back in. 31 touches, 8 tackles and 9 clearances

WAFL

FREMANTLE

Simpson 63 (60/7) – not his best game but laid 6 tackles with 10 touches and seems one of the most likely rookies from Freo

WEST COAST

Bye

  1. Almost getting to the point where I don’t want some of these guys to get the call up so they stay cheap for next year! Busslinger, Hustwaite, Cleary, Blight, Tunstill, Curtin, I’m looking at you.

    1. Averaging 16 disposals and five marks in the VFL this year. Role won’t be great even if he avoids the vest, but hard to argue with the price tag.
