Rookie Review – Round 1

SuperCoach has started for 2025 and our teams are now locked into our initial starting squads which is a relief! 55 rookie priced players got a game this week compared to 47 last year in Round 1.

Players that are considered rookies for this review are players priced under the Lalor Line of $203,500.

Of the players on the bubble I’m not sure who the best pick is, they all have some doubts associated with them. Paton was subbed out with 53% TOG and Hanily started as the sub last week. Long has scored well and had a nice role but is expensive. He still may be the pick of the crop. Warner in his 4th year might have cemented a spot in the team but how confident would you be to bank on that. McInnes is probably too expensive to be a real target also.

With no one forcing our hand as a trade target or to offload, all eyes on Leake who has a bye this week. I would suggest waiting until next week to get some more data when more of the rookie crop have played 2 games.

Good: Trainor scored well considering he had 6 clangers. 15 touches with 5 marks, 4 intercepts and even 2 clearances in a nice debut. Prior left his scoring late ending with 11 touches and 7 marks but his uncontested style did him no favours even going at 91%.

Bad: Leake played 60% of the game this week for 3 touches and a tackle. Has a bye this week but could very well see himself out of a few teams if any defender rookies put their hand up.

Sub: Bice came on in the 3rd quarter and made a big impact in 31% TOG. He had 12 touches and over 300m gained.

Good: A great week for our rookie mids which could have anywhere from 5-10 players here but will limit it to the top 3 scorers. Long played as a pure mid to get his 24 touches with 14 contested, 7 tackles and 5 clearances. He even went into the ruck and managed a hitout. He’s a bit expensive but he has a great role so far. O’Driscoll relished his time as an inside midfielder with 25 touches and 4 tackles with 7 score involvements. An excellent debut from Lindsay saw him have 22 touches at 82%, 3 marks, 6 tackles and 5 free kicks.

Sub: Draper had a nice impact in his 33% game time. He had 8 touches and 4 marks playing in the guts. The game was over otherwise his score could have been much higher. Langford managed 5 touches in 21% game time.

Keeffe had the ruck duties with Briggs out. He scored well with 13 touches, 6 tackles, 14 hitouts and a goal. 7 clangers held him back a bit. Fort had 14 touches, 12 hitouts and a goal as he took about a third of the ruck contests. Boyd rucked for majority of the game and scored well as a result. He had 12 touches with 8 contested, 4 clearances and 27 hitouts. Reid had 6 touches with 5 contested, 3 tackles and 6 hitouts. Reidy was decent in the ruck with 18 hitouts but had 6 touches and 3 clangers.

Good: Read played his best game kicking 2.2 from 10 touches with 6 contested, 3 marks and 9 hitouts from just 15 ruck contests. Hamling had an excellent game in defence with 11 touches, 4 marks, 10 intercepts and 9 one percenters.

Bad: Powell-Pepper did not have a good return game with 8 touches and 3 marks. 27% of coaches will be hoping for a better showing or he may have to go.

Sub: Jones had 2 touches in 23% TOG. Gruzewski played 27% of the game after a good game last week but only managed 1 tackle which was also a free against.
