Rookie Review – Round 11

Written by Alza on May 28 2024

The 1st week of the byes brings a challenging week, anyone brought in this week has a bye to come. The rookie options are slim and even worse with Richards now out for at least a month after such a promising start to his career. The Mid-season draft is this week which will see some new rookies drafted, hopefully we can have some decent options to pick from in a couple weeks.

Freijah was pretty good and is still an option to bring in although not ideal at an elevated price as his job security could change week to week. McAuliffe has risen in price to almost 200k but has a nice role and should stay in the side for a while now. He’s shown a fair bit so far the last few weeks. Slim pickings!

I would avoid bringing in any bye players like Dawson as the Roos game is 2 weeks away and plenty can happen in that time

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk*

The Good: Lohmann backed up last week with another great game. He kicked 2.3 from 18 touches, 8 marks, 4 tackles and 9 score involvements. Richards was a popular target this week and delivered with 22 touches, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 7 score involvements and a goal. Unfortunately, he is now out for a month with a foot injury. Harrison also had a great game for the young Pies. 13 touches at 85%, 9 tackles and 3 goals.

The Bad: Walter was subbed early after 1 touch in 35% game time. Duursma had a quiet day and was subbed out in the 3rd quarter. 3 touches and a goal with 3 clangers kept him to 0.

  1. Last week I was tossing up between Archer & Aleer, went Archer because I thought Aleer would get dropped as soon as Buckley got back and Archer had been brought straight back after missing Rd10 (so maybe good JS). Might work out in the end, but I was very annoyed with myself watching the Cats/Giants game on Saturday. Aleer looked great again.

    1. Was the right call until Aleer played this well. He still may come out of the side in a couple weeks when Buckley is back

      1. Yeah, hindsight is 20/20. Hopefully Archer keeps his place, I don’t know much about him or watch much North but you can’t drop young players just because they have a quiet game hopefully.

    1. We’ll find out today if he’s injured but he didn’t play VFL on the weekend and was not on the injury list. Unsure if it was a rest or not but I haven’t seen anything official

  2. Richards injury is a killer, he looked so good on Friday too. Tempted to carry him as his BE is so low and I feel like he’s earnt a spot in their 22.
Clarke suspended, just as he comes good with dangers return imminent, was also rough.
Got 220k in bank and 3 to 4 upgrades remaining so might bring in freijah and mccaullife this week then dawson next so I can go full premo by end of the byes. There aren’t many other options on horizon.

    1. @ Joey – jo – jo (and others :))

How do you rate McAuliffe versus Harrison for a downgrade this week?

I am looking to offload Windsor who has a BE of 126, and already lost $30k last week

Both McAuliffe & Harrison have round 15 byes, and are both in teams with large injury lists.

McAuliffe – MID – $198,100 (up $80k for year), Aver 52.8, BE = – 22, getting good disposal numbers, 19 year old, pick 40 in draft last year (2023)

Harrison – FWD – $213,500 (up $33k for year), Aver 54.8, BE – – 14, kicking goals with excellent disposal efficiency & tackling, turns 21 later in the year, pick 52 in November 2021 draft

      Thanks everyone

      2. McAuliffe has a better role as Harrison needs goals to score and plays as a forward. They should have similar job security.
McAuliffe attends centre bounces and gets a good crack in the middle although has low TOG.

They are both decent options considering the lack of options this week, lucky we had 40 trades as it makes short term plays like this more acceptable

        1. would going all three of mccaulliffe, freija and harrison be too much this week? just struggling to see where the cash is from here (other than Dawson)

          1. Nah they all have merit so it should be fine. They seem to be the best options this week so may as well get them now to keep the cash gen ticking along. It’s likely 1 will end up out of the side but it’s too hard to know which one yet and how far away that will be
