Rookie Review – Round 11

The byes are here and our rookies are dropping like flies. Simpson was a great option to bring in but joined the list of injured popular picks.

The rookie options aren’t all that promising this week but we have a few options that might be alright.

Gray came back into the side and performed well and should have a place in the 22 now. Smith had a career best score as he avoided the sub role. He’s been in excellent form in the VFL and this is a sign of it, will be on the fringes but options are slim. Keeler popped his head up as he played as a defender on Sunday. He definitely performed better and if this role continues could be a good downgrade target.

The byes are a good reminder that job security is the key with rookies. In the hunt for upgrades remember to not trade away all of your bench cover for when we return to best 22 scoring.

Good: Hardeman played his best game and showed a lot, only in 1% of teams. 28 touches at 82%, 10 marks, 5 intercepts and 776m gained. Clarke made his debut and kicked 3.1 playing in the forward line. He also had 16 touches, 8 marks, 8 score involvements and 3 tackles. Reid went down in the 3rd quarter with hamstring tightness with 58% TOG. He still scored very well with 15 touches at 93% with 7 contested, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 8 intercepts. He has been one of the best rookies but can now be traded out with a profit of nearly $320k.

Good: Long tackled his way to what I think is the highest rookie score of the year. 29 touches at 79% with 13 contested, 15 score involvements, 6 clearances and 14 tackles. Sheldrick once again scored well when avoiding the sub role. 26 touches at 46% with 13 contested, 5 tackles, 5 intercepts, 5 clearances and 537m gained.

Subs: Binns, Rowston, Jackson, Boxshall

Finnbar MALEY (FWD)NTH$143,500 (+$8.7k)41 (37)4
Darcy FORTBRL$256,300 (+$15.7k)80 (64)26

Fort kept his place as McInerney was still out. 8 touches with 5 contested, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 28 hitouts. Sims had 9 touches at 33% with 8 contested, 3 tackles and 3 hitouts. He could find himself on the outer if Lynch and Nank are back. Maley had some nice moments in his 9 touches and 4 marks but was subbed out with just 46% game time during the 3rd quarter.

Good: Reid returned to form in the wet with 4 goals from 18 touches at 44% with 8 contested, 3 marks and 4 tackles. Ashcroft continues his excellent debut season with 22 touches at 86%, 5 marks and a goal.

Bad: Simpson was the most popular rookie, traded in by 28% of teams but injured his shoulder in the 1st 5 minutes of the game and is now out long term. Gross got to start a game finally but didn’t perform to his best. 3 touches and 3 clangers coming from 49% TOG as he was subbed out in the 3rd quarter.

Subs: Clohesy, Robertson, Draper, Dewar, Sharp

  1. Long and Langford have been my biggest rookie misses of the year. They have been terrific.
Is Sheldrick still viable as a trade target? Would be nice if he could hit a target every now and again!

    • Yep, I missed them too. Add Hall to that mix he was great up until the last 2 weeks.

I think he could be, if he had the last bye he’d be real good. His PPM makes up for his low game time and yeah, if he can use it better it will make a big difference.

In 2023 he was in a similar position, sub/injury games then dropped in price. When he came back he scored well and was heavily traded in around $160 – $190k and make over $150k in about a month.
