Rookie Review – Round 7 2022

Written by Alza on May 3 2022

Some carnage during the week with some big names injured to go with the Dees health and safety protocol scares. People would be happy with majority of the rookies that played over the weekend but a few sent us back to the reality that rookies are in fact prone to having bad scores from time to time. Upgrade season is in full swing and we have some decent rookies coming but still none down back where we need them.

Players on the bubble are shown with an asterisk.

Zach REIDESS$173,10060 (60)-
Miller BERGMAN (MID)NTH$117,300-1 (-1)-

The Good: Coaches might have had to play an extra rookie on field in defence this week and were handed some good scores from our defensive rookies. Wangeneen-Milera had his best game at an important time with 18 touches with 4 marks and 4 tackles on the wing. Gibcus backed up his best game with another great game registering 12 touches at 83%, 6 marks with 10 one percenters in their huge win. De Koning used the ball well at 83% from his 12 touches. He had 7 intercepts with 3 contested marks and 7 one percenters.

The Bad: Miller Bergman unfortunately went down with a shoulder injury on his debut. Smith was subbed off with an ankle injury shortly after half time, his score was boosted due to his 5 touches going at 100% and all contested.

MIDFIELDERS

Greg CLARKWCE$117,300104 (104)-
Jack CARROLLCAR$123,90095 (95)-

The Good: Greg Clark made his awaited debut and didn’t he deliver. Playing on a wing and through the middle he had 24 touches at 83% with 7 marks and laid 6 tackles. Will be a must have when on the bubble. Carroll also made his debut and made the most of his semi low TOG of 68%. He had 19 touches as well as 8 marks, a goal and 3 goal assists.

The Bad: Hobbs was stuck in a pocket for majority of the game after giving away a 50m penalty early on. This ruined his scoring as he only had the 10 touches, went at a great 90% but had 4 clangers. If he gets a chance through the middle he will score well. Hately played his 2nd game and played fairly well but it didn’t show in his score, he had 17 touches at 76% with a goal.

RUCKS

Hugh DIXON (FWD)WCE$246,000 (+$29.7k)42 (59)47
Aiden BEGGCOL$123,90081 (81)-

Preuss rewarded all of the coaches that brought him in as a Grundy replacement this week. 34 hitouts, 10 touches with 7 contested and took 4 contested marks to hit another ton. Begg made his debut and surprised me with his score. Didn’t win many hitouts but did plenty of work in the contests with 15 touches mostly in the middle of the ground. Strnadica scored well in their heavy defeat with 10 touches, a goal and 10 hitouts.

Kade CHANDLERMEL$123,9008 (8)-

The Good: Nic Martin keeps getting it done with another great score. He always uses the ball well and this week was no exception, 25 touches at 80%. The live wire Ginnivan kicked 3.1 from 11 touches in a great game to back up his medal winning game last time around. Maurice Rioli played his 1st game of the year and made the Eagles pay in the 2nd half to end the night with 3.0 and 14 touches at 86%.

The Bad: Kade Chandler was the sub for the Dees and had 3 touches and 2 marks from his 16% game time. Dempsey played his 2nd game and failed to make the same impact in a low scoring game. He only managed 3 handballs from 59% game time. Maginness was probably needed on field this week by some and he disappointed after a great game last week. He had 12 touches but used it poorly at only 50%. He did have a massive 96% TOG so seems like he has great job security.

Rookie of the Year Award:
3 – Braydon Preuss
2 – Nic Martin
1 – Greg Clark

Rookie of the Year Award Round 6:
9 – Braydon Preuss
6 – Nic Martin
5 – Jack Hayes

  1. Ripping work Alza!

Clark is coming straight in for me, whether or not that’s for Rachele or the non-playing Hough is the question though, need to factor in byes at this point.

Hoping that Gibcus and De Koning can reach 350K around bye time, would be an ideal scenario to then make some moves.

    1. In the exact same position with players above. Cash in on Rachelle, or add another warm cow by moving Hough on.

I continue to argue with myself…

    1. Depends if you need/prefer a fwd or a mid downgrade. Even if you have the option with other dpp it will still influence who you can then have on or off field

  2. Great work again Alza – very much appreciated 🙂

Think I read somewhere that Maginness tagged Ed Langdon – and did a really good job restricting him to around 10 possessions.

So maybe that was why Maginness had such high TOG %?

This week, will be downgrading Caldwell (who has done a good consistent job for me) to McComb.

McComb is mature aged, has a great football history, is hard at the footy, tackles well, and he should win plenty of the ball.

Just needs to “not rush” his disposals so much to clean up his disposal efficiency – which I am confident he will learn as he plays more at the higher intensity of AFL footy.

Hopefully Bevo gives him a decent run at it 🙂

    Thanks again for the article!!

  3. Great write up Alza, I’m surprised to see Pruess that far in front in the rookie award. Given that you could get Martin at half of Pruess’s price and he’s still pumping out Tons is as good as a rookie we’ll see in a while, I would have thought.

  4. Hoping Dixon does better this week as Strnadica is in isolation due to COVID
The way it seems is players like NOD, JHF and Rachele are on the chopping block this week

    1. Well, there goes plan A. Lots of options this week…Curtis on the bubble, or Clark a week early, and maybe Carrol next week.

  5. Everyone spot on about the lack of defensive rookies being a worry.
The only one I can see that I would be confident in taking would be Reid. The bombers have talked him up for a while and he looked reasonably good for what was basically his first game in a pretty bad loss.

Elevated price tag however which seems to be the norm over the last 2 seasons for decent DEF rooks.

There is probably better value elsewhere but if you are desperate for someone with decent JS in the backline then Reid may be your man
