Rookie Review – Round 7

A pretty disappointing week of rookie scoring with a handful of exceptions with over half scoring less than 50.

Trainor and O’Sullivan both bounced back this week and rewarded the coaches that held. Trainor will be back to making money next week so if you held you should hold for a few more weeks.

There aren’t really any decent options to bring in this week. If I remember correctly Tunstill has done something similar before and with the Lions strong side it’s hard to find a regular spot. McDonald is another option but I think when Jackson returns this week or next he might be on the outer.

I would suggest holding off on bringing rookies in this week, which is easier said than done. Waiting until next week for Hustwaite and Busslinger who both played well after dominating the VFL for more than just this season could be the best option.

And just quickly, keep an eye on Sid Draper who after this week could be under $150k. If he can get into the starting 22 he could be a decent rookie downgrade if you don’t already have him.

Good: Bice just keeps his form going as he pushes his average to 90. 20 touches at 95% with 7 marks and 7 intercepts. O’Sullivan beat his breakeven this week. It’s not that unexpected as he has been a great rookie this year. He played very well and scored accordingly thanks to 17 touches, 8 marks, 9 one percenters and 12 intercepts. Reid had a big game in the wet making it look dry on ANZAC Day. 16 touches at 81% with 8 contested, 7 marks, 9 intercepts and 5 one percenters will keep his price rising.

Subs: Macdonald

Jye MENZIEESS$229,900 (-$3.2k)8 (40)97

Good: Powell-Pepper has been one of the best rookies so far as he almost hit his 3rd 100 in a row. 17 touches, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 8 score involvements and kicked 1.2 including 1 miss from the goal square. Cleary played his best game with some time in the midfield this week. 17 touches at 82% with 10 contested, 5 marks, 5 tackles and 3 clearances. Hall played well seemingly to avoid a Ross Lyon spray as his 2nd half was where most of his scoring came from. 15 touches at 87%, 3 marks, 4 tackles and a goal.

Bad: Dolan struggled to make an impact this week with 3 touches and a tackle. Keeler is a developing tall forward/ruck and this score is a sign of that, 3 touches, 5 hitouts and a goal from 78% TOG. Dewar only had 7 touches at 43% with 2 clangers to have a low score.

Subs: Sharp, Menzie, Narkle, Draper, Tunstill, Duursma, Hanily

  1. Many thanks (as always) for the rookie report. Sure, NOT trading rookies likely makes sense… but chance that will happen… slim.

  2. really want to do a one (or two) down and one up this week to get petracca or neale but the rookie options are pretty slim at the moment and already have deadwood on the pine thanks to Knevvit/Gross (are eagles rookies a no go from here on with both Hall and Gross dropped after 3 games?).
Smart thing to do is just wait a week on hustwaite and Busslinger to make sure they are named again in game 3 and just hope Neale/Petracca dont go up too much in price.

I regret keeping Trainor over Stone last week as Stone finally broke the 40 ceiling he had. almost tempted to trade trainor back to him this week over the other def rookie options haha.

    • It’s a tough situation and you’re not alone in possibly going to take a risk on a rookie. You could bring in McDonald or Tunstill if they are named and hope they stay in the side but I don’t have much confidence in that long term. Another option is El-Hawli but he is just as risky even more so. Fullarton might stay in the side for a while but his scoring doesn’t seem to make it worthwhile even with about a whole quarter in the ruck when Gawn was rested, he still only scored 30.

It is criminal in SuperCoach but sometimes it is necessary to go early. It’s not recommended but it may be your best option. Definitely with 1 and not both, who is safer is the question. I think Busslinger as the Hawks have a strong midfield and gave Hustwaite a crack against the Eagles in a fairly easy win. Splitting hairs here as they are both good but pick which ever one you would be happier to have a negative outcome would be my advice. If Hustwaite is dropped you still have 2 other mid bench spots where as in defence you would only have 1.

      • And I wouldn’t be trading Trainor now that you’ve held, you should hold him for another few weeks and cash in on him increasing in value over that time.

Can Tiger Trainor increase in money when he has a BE of 86…after being Bevoed with The Vest in round 6 for a -2 and…Like Round 6…Balta will return probably to Centre Half Back…Trainor averages 56..

  3. Thanks Alza! The only viable downgrade this week looks like Archer Reid to a loophole at R3 for a cash grab only, unless a miracle occurs and Tunstill can jag a spot in the 22.

Hopefully Hustwaite and The Buss are available next week…

    • Yeah that would be an ideal trade, especially if you brought Flynn in last week. Hopefully Tunstill gets a chance to prove himself, he’s been a great performer at VFL level.

  4. Might have to go with Tunstill even if not selected as his price allows me to do an upgrade with my 2nd trade and his dual position allows me to move others to where they need to be. Unless anyone knows of another $119 900 F/M on the selection horizon??

    • If you have other cover then not the worst idea with DPP. Could go with Davis from the Eagles but he would also be at risk of being dropped/rested/sub week to week or a basement priced player.
