Rookie Review – Round 9

A lot of our rookies have started to drop away now. We are relying less on them for scores on field but we do still need them and rookie roulette is getting harder.

Popular target Busslinger was dropped after a nice debut and a game as sub, could be out of favour at the Dogs. Signed a contract extension, 3rd season at the club and a great performer at VFL level, maybe there’s more to it that we don’t know.

Hustwaite played his 3rd game and was subbed out at half time. It was a tight game so hopefully it was just to add a different mix and he keeps his place in the side as he showed a lot in his 1st 2 games

The best options this week look to be Boxshall, although he wasn’t as good this week and only got 49% TOG. I think he holds his spot and will tackle his way to a good score. El-Hawli is the other option. Played his 2nd non sub game and averages 68 when not the sub. If he can hold his spot in the 22 then he should be a decent option with the Bombers injury list growing.

Fonti disappointed in his 2nd game and now leaves a lot of doubt at his slightly elevated price and strong backline. Maley also didn’t put his hand up as a must get and with Sims making his debut he looks like a better option. He has scored very well in the VFL, if he keeps his spot over the next 2 weeks he is a better option.

Good: What a game from Reid! Playing 100% game time, he had 27 touches at 85%, 14 marks, 8 intercepts and 8 one percenters. Back-to-back tons sees him with a negative breakeven and projected to reach over $400k. Bews returned from injury and had a top 5 career score. 17 touches at 88%, 7 marks and 4 intercepts. Has a career average of 51 with a season high in 2020 of 64, see how he goes next week as he is not an ideal target to bring in early. Prior had his best score thanks to 23 touches at 87%, 14 marks, 5 intercepts and 497m gained.

Bad: Paton was subbed out after 49% game time with 3 touches, 2 marks and 2 clangers. Hamling played 79% game time but deep forward he managed 6 touches with 4 clangers.

Subs: Macdonald

Fort returned to the side as the rucks battled Xerri. 11 touches at 36% with 7 contested, 2 tackles and 24 hitouts. Sims made his debut and held his own. 6 touches, all kicks at 100%, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 3 hitouts and a goal. Maley was subbed out after 4 touches at 25% and 2 tackles in 50% game time. Not a great sign for those looking to bring him in. Reid’s form has dropped and could be in need of a rest. 3 touches, 3 tackles and 3 hitouts.

    • Should be pretty good but his career average is 50 which isn’t ideal. Depends on the role he plays, with Stewart back he will probably be more of a lockdown defender

    • Nah, ha not good.
Expect Stewart & Humphries back this week, with possibility of Henry being available too.
Blue moon game, with others competing for his spot- look elsewhere imo
