Despite not finishing high up in the previous midfield poll, there were a couple of players whom I suspect will be very popular picks anyway, so I’m going to throw them in as well:

Nat Fyfe ($608,300)

Sam Walsh ($543,300)

Finally, I think we already know the answer to the next question about a certain Gold Coast youngster, but I’ll chuck him in for the sake of completeness:

Matt Rowell ($495,100)

  1. Im looking at starting Lyon – Had him last year and performed well. Gets plenty of it, I see him very similar to Neale @ Fremantle a few years ago. Rising star. POD. Lock for me.

  2. As he’s not mentioned above, wondering which way the community is leaning on Matt Crouch?

    T/u Yes, he’s a starter
    T/d No, he’s an upgrade

    1. Hey Mike, check out my article on the Crows. Stats should have him in the top 10 mids but history also suggests people will take a wait and see approach with him.
Given we are not likely to pick five high promos straight off the bat, Matt will fly under the radar and could be a good POD if you are game.

      1. TY Coaches and JimmyDee.

Definitely loads to consider. This is year 4 for me in SC so starting to really put lots more into my starting selections and have improved remarkably due in large part to the great insight and comments from coaches of this tremendous site.

Currently very unsure of the “Premium” MIDs after Neale and Oliver… certainly looking at value, potential, team prospects, etc… have been considering filling out the next 3-4 spots in the line with Merrett, Crouch, Walsh, Cripps, Simpkin, Rowell, Taranto depending on how they look in the pre-season and whether anyone has an interrupted run on the track.

Thanks to all the coaches that took the time to Tu/Td and comment.

        Good luck

  3. I am interested to hear people’s thoughts on Matt Rowell. Are you planning on starting him from the get go and see him being a season keeper, or a stepping stone? Is anybody concerned about the dreaded ‘second year blues’ or the potential for opposition to put a bit more work into him and clamp down on him? Lastly, we only have a 4 game window to judge him off and those games were played in a compromised season (ie. shorter quarters/increased scaling).

Looking at options in a similar price range such as McCluggage, Taranto, Tim Kelly and Sloane, would it be wiser to select a player with a proven scoring history?

    1. I was big on Rowell for a week but now are pretty sure he’ll have a lot of sub 80 games in there too just because that’s what developing players do. if you picked out three games from Walsh’s first 5 games in his first season, he scored 112, 123 and 112 but went on to average only 86 for the season. I know rowell has more inside mid time, but i see rowell averaging 105 or possibly even less. Who knows for sure, but I’m happy to take him on

      1. Plus gold coast had some big wins to help rowell in some of those few games. Rowell was looking terrible in the short time he played against cats, then include the longer quarters, rowell getting more attention this year, and GCs aim to mothball him a bit more to make him a more long term player. For all these reasons he might be a decent pick but is not the lock that 60% of the SC community seems to think

        1. agreed – if you pick him at M5, you are basically saying that he will remain as one of your top 8 mids for the year – not sure he will be

    1. Rowell has become this weird cultural phenom / cult figure cause of his quirky old school ways. I feel some SCers have been swept up by all of this. He can definitely play but surely he’ll cop a tagger, he’ll get lots of ‘attention’ around the ground, that’s a lot for a kid that hasn’t even played double digit games yet. He had a blistering start to the season in 2020 but like many of the comments above i doubt his ability to be a top 8 mid this year. Top 15 yep, probably, but not sure about top 8.

That said, i’m open to hearing the counter argument, just don’t think he should be a walk up start to our teams like he seems to be for many.

  4. I’m Starting The Bont.

All his stats trend up, since he started playing full time mid at the end of 2018, he has just got better and better.
    2019 ave 114.7
    2020 ave 116.1
He is the undisputed no.1 mid and captain of the Dogs. Yes he will rest forward at times but this means he kicks goals ( 2nd at the dogs in 2020 after Wallis. )
He is hitting his prime age wise, and with his huge tank and longer quarters, I just see him getting better.
He is also a great kick and very durable. Wasting few possies and , more than likely to play every game.

I know people are worried about Treloar, but…
Three of last years top 10 mids were Bulldogs. Are we to ignore 30% of the best talent going around based on just one player ?

Also last year when all the Dogs Mids played together in the same team ( Bont. Macrae, Hunter, Libba, Smith,)
The Bont still had the most CBA’s and averaged 120+ for those last 5/6 games.

I’m pretty sure, Treloa won’t affect him much at all

    Get on the Bont train.
