The Maulers – A Brief Explanation

Written by Motts on March 22 2021

So back on March 4th, I published my team reveal. It looked like this:

As many of you know, I went into Round 1 with this team:

… which ended up scoring 2,395 so I thought I’d better explain a few of my decisions and tell you what’s going to happen from here.

Backs

I never had Lloyd. Firstly because of his injury but then because I couldn’t justify spending $650k on a DEF. In fact the only position where I went with the highest priced player was FWD with Dangerfield and that now looks like a poor decision given his impending suspension. So maybe that’s something to think about in future seasons.

ZWill got rubbed out so needed to be replaced. I went with Stewart because he’s proven. The money I saved by not taking Gawn in RUC meant I could upgrade Chapman to Daniel. The rooks were always fluid.

Mids

Went Neale to Macrae because of the cash it made, I’ve seen Lachie get tagged out of games and I was worried about his fitness going into Round 1. Oliver became Zerrett because I think he’s got a little more upside but the difference between their averages at the end of the year will be minimal. Rowell became Taranto because who knows how an injured player is going to return? I certainly dodged a bullet there.

Rucks

After talking with good mate, Gup, I took Gawn out of my team and then invested the money on other lines and liked what I saw. This decision will probably come back to bite me but in Round 1 after Flynn scored 140 I’m not feeling so bad about it. Side note: if I’d taken Grundy out and gone with Gawn I would’ve won the round overall.

Forwards

Taking Gawn out meant I could upgrade Daniher to Dunkley. One less risky midpricer.

What happens next?

Normally I’d sit tight but given I’m in the hunt for overall glory, I’ve got to put the foot down.

Trade 1) Dangerfield subs into the midfield with Brockman and gets traded to Titch.

Trade 2) Henry comes out, Campbell subs down from the midfield and in comes T Powell (who I should’ve had in from the get go but he wasn’t mentioned by North last week and I made the rookie error of not checking the teams on Saturday).

Thanks to everyone who left messages of support both here and on Twitter. I’ve been playing this game a long, long time and it’s without a doubt my best ever weekly result. Fingers crossed I can just go on with it!

    1. Cheers Pumba. Dusty as VC was one I didn’t explain here. As a long-suffering Blues man, I’m only too familiar with the fact that he LOVES us in Round 1. Took a gamble on him and it paid off.

      1. Big gamer move Motts!

As I was building my team, I put the VC on Dusty and my thinking was ‘oh, this is a bit cheeky but it has a pretty good chance of paying off.’ Woke up the next morning and was thrilled with the outcome… until I looked at my team to finalize some rookies and realized he wasn’t VC’d. I guess when I was trading other players, the VC got switched to Macrae and I missed out on Dusty.

To add insult to injury, I rolled the dice on my Captain choice but forgot that Neale gets a hard tag from Sydney. I’m just outside top 5,000 now but with just this captaincy change, I would have been around 1,100 overall.

    2. Fantastic result for Motts, his team looks a lot like mine but my bench scored higher and I had rowell instead of Bruhn, Toby instead of Dusty , Caldwell instead of McDonald plus hunter onfield instead of Flynn 🙁

I think that it was bad luck that Rowell got injured. Maybe if he had scored 106 instead of just 6 Mott’s would have ranked 200th instead of second, I don’t know for sure because I haven’t checked.
To suggest that luck isn’t the primary influence on supercoach is naive

  3. Fantastic effort Motts, and may it continue, looking forward to seeing weekly updates. I will certainly consider not starting with the highest player in each position in future, with Lloyd, Neale, Gawn & Danger all failing to make a century.

  4. Well done Motts a great result Danger to Tich seems logical but I might go radical and choose CLARKE from saints It’s the 200k I am interested in as i am sure he is a top defender good luck son DD

  6. Mottsy – 1. no explanations required on the changes.
    2. Really appreciate the fact that you took the time regardless.
    3. AWESOME RESULT Champ!!

Trade hard mate and good luck … certainly astute choice of Flynn instead of one of the big two rucks!! They were both poor (at least in a scoring sense – Grundy understandable that Doggies midfield took all the ball … but not sure why on Gawn – is CD changing the guard???)

I myself just couldn’t do it and went with all the “big guns” in all lines, and they all failed! (Grawndy, Lloyd, Neale and Steele and Danger – ouch!)

Look forward to you staying at the top!!

  9. Great stuff, good to see a ripper score from a fellow blues man!

I’m loving how SuperCoach relevant Carlton are, isn’t great plonking so many into our teams.

  10. Nice start mate. When you mentioned possible trades, and put titch out there I kinda got jealous. He just kept getting the ball Rd 1, I’m assuming he is very unique too. Good luck for the season
