Rookie Review – Round 17

Written by Alza on July 11 2023

A bit of an up and down week for the rookies with our bench coverage not ideal this round with Sheldrick and Johnson not reaching the heights they have shown the last month but new recruits like Fogarty and Cunningham playing very well. Still, it is better to have these decent rookies on our benches as cover as we will need it for the run home. Teams are likely to be finished now so the Rookie Review will start to wind down in a couple of weeks as SuperCoach finals begin.

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk.

The Good: Buckley has returned to his early season form with back to back scores in the 90’s. He did this from 16 touches at 81%, 5 marks, 6 intercepts and 8 one percenters. Wilmot has stepped up the last month or so right around the time most coaches probably traded him, this week he had 15 touches, 5 marks, 4 tackles and a goal. Atkins had a great game with a huge 2nd half which seems like he didn’t get the full reward for considering his stats. He had 26 touches at 81% although just 1 contested and 4 clangers, 8 marks, 2 tackles, 5 one percenters and 762 metres gained.

The Bad: Michalanney had his first poor game as can happen in the 2nd half of the season with our rookies. He had 5 touches at 20% from 86% game time. O’Donnell was subbed out once gain after 59% TOG and 5 touches at 80%.

The Good: Ashcroft had an ideal matchup that people have been waiting for and he delivered. He had 28 touches at 96% with 11 contested, 5 marks, 7 tackles, 7 clearances, 2 goal assists and 8 score involvements. A glimpse of what we could see on a semi regular basis in the future. Hewett played his best game as he had a decent amount of time in the middle with 14 CBA’s. He had 18 touches at 50% but 10 of those were contested with 2 marks, 5 tackles and 4 clearances.

Esava RATUGOLEA (FWD)GEE$286,400 (-$36.7k)43 (59)97

Williams was a fairly popular trade target this week and had a decent game for a young ruckman, 6 touches at 83% with 3 marks, 2 tackles and a goal. Ratugolea had a bit of a quiet day with just 6 touches, 2 marks, 2 tackles and 8 one percenters.

The Good: Fogarty rewarded the many coaches that brought him in with another great game. He had 17 touches, 5 tackles and a goal and should have really solid job security now. Henry continued his good form with 20 touches, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 4 clearances.

The Bad: King played 53% TOG before being subbed out and only managed 1 kick which was a clanger. Bauer was unfortunately injured just 3 minutes into his debut after having 2 kicks, glass half full is that his PPM was through the roof and it wasn’t a long term injury.

    1. Probably is more of a bad thing now this late in the year. Is a good loop option and will be cheaper next year

  1. The one week I needed Johnson to actually play on field to cover Dunkley, he scores me a 34 after scoring 70+ in his last 4 matches he started on field
