Captaincy Candidates – Round 16

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 28 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 109, 75, 100
  • L3 @ G: 70, 162, 168

Dees descended into being a soft midfield opponent, so love anyone against them till the season’s end. Neale and Dunks locks for 130 tonight. Can unfortunately see Gawn having no one to bat to, so have given him a pass.

GULDEN v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 93, 66, 156
  • L3 @ SCG: 157, 82, 95

In a ultra tight midfield battle, I’m liking an in form Errol Gulden to absolutely dominate on the outside. Solid for 125. Heeney also a good option with his consistent midfield and SI economy in what should be a close, nicely scaled game.

SERONG v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 150, 101, 120
  • L3 @ SCG: 120

Similar proposition as Heeney, with added kicker that Serong ripped a 150 against the Swannies earlier this season. Like him for 140 as the Dockers angle for an upset.

DAICOS v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 149, 143, 75
  • L3 @ PFS: 149, 143

Fresh off the bye and against a Suns midfield that either gets it right or has no answers post-clearance, Daicos should be a solid for 130+ up at Metricon.

Captaincy Candidates

GREEN v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 134, 107, 111
  • L3 @ AO: 129, 50, 107

After a torried run of injury, tags and poor form, Green snapped back into action last week with 35 and 15 contested and reminded everyone a) what a tremendous player he is and b) that he can still produce competitive SC scores. Steamrolls the Crows for 140.

MERRETT v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 69, 91, 113
  • L3 @ MCG: 125, 119, 127

Zerrett was nothing but class last week and gets another soft opponent in the Tigers. Back for 130.

WALSH v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 109, 122, 55
  • L3 @ MCG: 110, 87, 119

Easy one here. Fixture hunting. Fixes the Tigers up for 130.

YEO v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 93, 94, 100
  • L3 @ OS: 127, 94, 80

Yeo was absolutely sensational last week. He had Caldwell tagging him all afternoon and with no midfield support he kept us competitive and tallied 16/20 contested (insane, 80%), 13 tackles and a goal.

On a more dour note, his father passed away this week. He’s set to play, so thinking that and the return of Kelly and Reid should see him fire up and take it to the Hawks for 130.

Steer Clear

BONTEMPELLI v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 169, 102, 82
  • L3 @ MRVL: 162, 99, 186

Under an injury cloud all week and will get tagged. Pass. Low-ton.

BUTTERS v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 82, 96, 89
  • L3 @ MRVL: 84, 118, 96

Didn’t cop Berry last week but surely gets Windhager this time around? Pass. Potential sub-ton.

Smoky Pick

LDU v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 73, 74, 66
  • L3 @ MRVL: 147, 152, 90

Been playing some absolutely banging football and quickly shaping up as one of the best backend midfield options. Despite the Dogs density OB, LDU and co should take it right up to the Dogs for 140. Xerri bodying Tingles will also help.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156
  • Round 13: Satan 97
  • Round 14: Zorko 141
  • Round 15: Flanders 117

Verdict

Pretty great week. Definitely don’t want to bungle it. I’ll be going Daicos into Yeo but as mentioned love everyone named. Get creative, ceiling chase and pass 120s this week.

  1. I’m not sure why but am liking trading in Treloar over Butters as my final mid spot (for now). Bought Neale in last week only to shirk the vice and miss the near 150. So to avoid this again, any love for Treloar against North with Bont and Libba likely to garner all the attention?

  2. All of a sudden I am seeing taggers EVERYWHERE.
    Neal – Neal-Bullen
Libba – Phillips – No Bont tag if he plays as North have no one suitable
    Gulden – Aish
Heeney- Young. Maybe Warner runs riot.
    Green – Michaelany
    Daicos – Miller
    Merrett – O’Connor
I will be probably going Gulden for the VC and Green for the C but I am particularly also liking Houston against the Saints.

    1. If Freo didn’t tag Bont, they won’t tag Gulden. Young hasn’t played defensive MID for a while.

Neal-Bullen, I think, was a special treat for Daicos. They’ve moved Rivers is as that 3rd MID with Viney and Satan.

      Michalaney, no.

Far. As if I missed Houston v Saints. Yes. Absolutely.

  3. Thanks for the great article again GD 🙂

I need to choose my VC from the first game tonight (Bris vs Melb) – as my only non players are in the 2 x early Saturday games

So my choice is either Gawn or Zorko – in a game where Brisbane should win

t/up Gawn – as GD said, weakened midfield without Petracca & Oliver is also in poor form to tap to, but Gawn is SC royalty & sole ruck

t/down – Zorko – can be tagged & inconsistent, but loves playing at the Gabba

    Thanks in advance everyone !!

    1. Yeah, he does.

And Pies a decent DEF side. I named Ryan v them a few weeks ago.

      I like it, fellas.

      ZORKO L3 @ G: 141, 161, 160

      Lmao. What a local gull.

  4. Gawn last 2 games against Bris were both at the G and scored 138 & 215! Previous game to those 2 was at the Gabba and Gawn did his knee in the first minute or 2 of the game and scored 0.

Don’t know if that helps or not.

        1. Oath, habib.

I’ve gone Grundy, Xerri, Sweet and DCam at R2 this year lmao.

Went Tingles to Maxxy as a luxury + extra body last week. He’s gonna to end up on Antiques Roadshow now that I’ve jumped on.

  5. Apologies, all. Courtesy of Shaggi I just realised I missed the obviously VC/C of all this week: Houston v Saints. We know how DEFs eat v them.

Getting to comments and inquiries now.

  6. Rowan Marshall for me is taking the captain duties. Incredible stats against port and should well and truly outclass Sweet both in the ruck and around the ground.

His 5 outings against port prior to this year returned a floor of 127 and 143 average!!
The 63 he put up against them earlier this year from memory it was reported he was a bit sore. Fresh off the bye here. Locked in for me.
