Captaincy Candidates – Round 18

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 15 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 149, 190, 123 (154 av.)
  • L3 @ QLD: 98, 157, 77 (111 av.)

Any of the Lions premos are good bets this week but Neale comes in off a better score last week and has some great stats for this match up. No TOG issues last week, so solid for 130 on Friday night.

MILLER v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 96, 140, 80 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 107, 115, 146 (123 av.)

Got absolutely f*cking robbed last week with 35 touches, 16 contested, 14 tackles and 2 goals ONLY 143 – and, no, I will not let it go! Point being, he’s in deadly form and will serve up 120+ this week.

MACRAE v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 146, 169, 139 (151 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 117, 96, 141 (118 av.)

Suns no longer push overs, having put Richmond and GWS to the sword over the last fortnight, but Macrae’s got great stats v them and up at Metricon. A lock for 130. Bont also solid, just note the Suns tend to rotate a defensive MID through stoppages.

Captaincy Candidates

STEELE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 105, 114, 67 (95 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 154, 99, 116 (123 av.)

Going to be 700k next year, but I just have to start him – such a god. Wins the ball, hits the scoreboard, tackles, does it all. Will do what Petracca did to Port last week, 140+ with the Saints angling for finals.

PARISH v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 152, 88, 81 (107 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 114, 72, 92 (93 av.)

Had Schoenberg on his ass last week, but will click but into gear against the Roos at Marvel. No questions asked, 135+. Zerrett also a solid option for us peasants without Parish.

GRUNDY v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 135, 127, 141 (134 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 140, 126, 76 (114 av.)

Blues forced to run sweet little De Koning as the #1 ruck, who has just been getting slapped around – remember Darcy’s 193? That was vs De Koning. Don’t see how he doesn’t go 150 as a reinvigorated Pies side look to close out the season respectably. Walsh also viable up against the Pies.

Steer Clear

KELLY v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 119, 116, 91 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 109 (109 av.)

Swans the most restrictive midfield in the competition, turning the screws on Bont and Macrae last week. They’ve also started using Hewett again as a tagger. Low-ton at best for Kelly this week.

Smoky Pick

DARCY v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 97, 74, 72 (81 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 140, 112, 112 (121 av.)

Just for you, Abs! Back-to-back near double tons for Darcy, who’s quickly entered the starting ruck conversation for SC 2021. Cats without a proper ruckman so, much like Grundy, 150~ incoming.

LAIRD v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 120, 76, 96 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 129, 144, 123 (132 av.)

Really excellent fall back this week. Markedly higher ceiling at home, Eagles all over the place and particularly and perennially weak at CPs and ground ball gets. As long as he tries to hit targets instead of sending the ball into orbit, he’s solid for 135 this week.

Verdict

Neale into Miller for me, but definitely go for a combo of Steele, Grundy and Parish if you have them.

  1. Thanks for the shoutout GD!
    Great help last week!

    Definitely backing Darcy again!

Hopefully don’t need a C, but some great picks as a fallback.

Neale, Macrae and Tracca / Oliver as potential C’s if necessary!

    1. Of course, habib. No problem.

Darcy another near double ton. Watch.

Such a good pick up, gw.

  2. Since I’m down Whitfield and Langford was thinking a roughie as VC. Short without Houli is tempting and lions should have the ball in tigers backline a lot with tigers poor form. But will probably just go safe and Steele into Grundy. Good luck all.

    1. As much I think Short will round out the season nicely, yeah I think you’ve got to Steele into Grundy, Glen.

  3. With a few games now changing states it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any change in game times. Presumably not, but something to monitor.

    1. Good call Roo Bloke.
Giants v Swans game will likely be held at Metricon Stadium Sunday night — as late as 6.25pm was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday at 1.45pm.

      1. Yeah….we really need all game times announced before tomorrow bounce. Has massive impact on c options as well as loops.

        1. The time change for this game has been massive for my team. With Whitfield injured I’ve now got a bucket of vc/c options.

    1. Probably gets attention from Serong, I’d look at the other aforementioned candidates instead.

      Here are his stats anyway:

      DANGERFIELD v Dockers

      L3 v Dockers: 88, 57, 94 (80 av.)
      L3 @ OS: 121, 88, 127 (112 av.)

  4. Grundy looks good as captain.

Demons should dominate Hawks so I’m liking the look of Oliver for VC

    1. Yeah, L&L just mentioned him but he copped attention from Shiels last time and has been kinda soft lately – Hawks could let him run free though, idk. Own him, but a pass for the VC/C from me.

      Here are his stats:

      SATAN v Hawks

      L3 v Hawks: 115, 121, 96 (111 av.)
      L3 @ MCG: 87, 105, 140 (111 av.)

  5. It is reported that the Richmond-Brisbane match, scheduled to be at the MCG on Friday night, will be moved to the Gold Coast, with both clubs to fly to Queensland on Thursday afternoon.

Metricon Stadium could now host as many four games in Round 18: Richmond-Brisbane on Friday, Gold Coast-Western Bulldogs on Saturday, North Melbourne-Essendon on Sunday afternoon and Sydney-Giants on Sunday night.

These changes are due to a snap Melbourne lockdown expected to start at midnight with certainly no crowds allowed.

    To be updated.

    1. Stuck on hold @work so I’ll help you and GD out:

      Zorko last 3 v Tigers: 117 / 74 / 141 (110.6 avg)

      Zorko last 3 @ Metricon Stadium: 109 / 140 / 70 (106.3 avg)

I personally didnt love the idea while this game was scheduled to be played at the G’

But with the move to MS the Lions are by all means expected to maul the Tigers and Zorko could easily play a major role in that.

      1. Thanks Abs,

I’m torn between Zorko or Steele into Grundy this week. Leaning towards Steele methinks.

Pretty sure Grundy will go ham against De Koning anyway 🙂

        1. Tyvm for that, Abs. Was out, yeah.

Any already Lion a good bet v Tigers but especially now that it’s up in QLD, Wayne.

  6. With Cunnington out I’m looking at MacRae into
    T/u-Zerrett (leaning 40%)
    T/d-Grundy ( leaning 60%)

  7. I’m totally pi55ed !! Was planning Rob to Grundy this week but $500 short after Grundy second half last week. As most oppts have him…I suspect a double ton v De Koning.

    1. With North travelling to Queensland for the game against Bombers, Cunners has opted to stay in Victoria with his family!

      1. Thanks Guys,
        Wow good on him,
        Family first always.
But doesn’t help my SuperCoach team
Especially with Langford out as well.

Might have to eat into my few remaining trades.

Dunkley is the obvious one and
Marshall for the other I suppose.

I’ll wait for team drops, and pour myself a
        Stiff 12 yr old Scotch.

Apologies for posting in the wrong thread.

        1. Argh tough break there, Smurfo. Props for taking it with class though, really like Cunnington otherwise.

Maybe pour yourself a double lol.

  8. Updated AFL Round 18 fixture (All times AEST)

    Thursday July 15

Fremantle v Geelong Cats, 8:10pm, Optus Stadium

    Friday July 16

Richmond v Brisbane Lions, 7:50pm, Metricon Stadium

    Saturday July 17

    Melbourne v Hawthorn, 4:35pm, MCG

Gold Coast Suns v Western Bulldogs, 4:35pm, Metricon Stadium

St Kilda v Port Adelaide, 7:25pm, Marvel Stadium

    Sunday July 18

North Melbourne v Essendon, 12:35pm, Metricon Stadium

    Collingwood v Carlton, 3:20pm, MCG

Adelaide Crows v West Coast Eagles, 4:40pm, Adelaide Oval

GWS Giants v Sydney Swans, 6:10pm, Metricon Stadium

    ## There is doubt about Saturday night’s St Kilda v Port Adelaide clash, which is currently scheduled for Marvel Stadium, however the Power flying into Melbourne seems unlikely given the Victorian lockdown. WA is a likely venue.

    To be update.

    What a chaotic day !!

  9. T/U: Lyons into Steele
    T/D: Steele into Grundy

I like Macrae too but think it might be too risky with no Libba and Dunkley back in – would be interesting to see the dynamics of the dogs midfield now.

  10. With Ceglar out and Reeves main ruck against Gawn, I’m surprised he hasn’t been mentioned.

    TU – VC Gawn
    TD – VC Oliver

    2

    4
    1. Gawn still sharing ruck load with Jackson so I reckon he won’t be around his usual 130 scores for rest of season. I hope I’m wrong though.

  11. I’m gonna C Grundy but i want a VC with a higher celling.

    T/U Steele (vs Port) VC

T/D Macrae ( vs GC) VC

  12. LIKELY SATURDAY FIXTURE

*St Kilda v Port Adelaide (Marvel Stadium) – 1.45pm

Gold Coast v Western Bulldogs (Metricon Stadium) – 4.35pm

    Melbourne v Hawthorn (MCG) – 7.25pm

*The Power would fly in Saturday morning and would fly home after the game and joining them at the airport would be the Saints, who would fly to Perth.

The earlier time slot allows St Kilda to quarantine for seven days in Western Australia – albeit in a resort and being allowed to train – before they take on West Coast in Round 19.
