This week’s trades are headlined by a mid season rookie draftee from Williamstown with DPP (D/M) and coming from a VFL average of 100 on the back of 27.7 disposals thus far. Straight into the Crows unit at the expense of an unlucky Isaac Cumming who could miss three weeks, thus giving Hugo Hall Kahan at least that many games to settle. Originally drafted to Sydney as a small forward (not super small at 188 cm), but then went to Williamstown and converted to a running half back. Has speed and apparently breaks lines, don’t we love that?
All the theories tell us to wait for bubble boys so that we have some data to work with, but hey, where are they? I went Artemis last week on a wing and a prayer, and I’ll be jumping on the Hugo train this week. Hugo is best mates with Josh Worrell so should be settled right in early and has Josh back there to help mentor wherever possible. Can’t see it being a bust plus he’s there to cover all byes, hopefully.
Now speaking of byes, I’m going to throw my thoughts out there before analysing the trades as they fall. My thoughts only, and only as they apply to my team, but bear in mind they will apply to many coaches out there in SuperCoach land.
Firstly, I will make every effort to bring in players off the bye so that I have that coverage for the whole of the next four rounds without the need to bench someone I’ve just brought in. Secondly, if I was to somehow grab someone outside this parameter, I have to avoid trading in anyone from the round 16 bye as it will be a killer that week. Of the 18 most owned players from round 16, I own 50% of them, including Sam Flanders who has to go at some stage, so adding a Kossy, Dale, Wilkie, Richards or Bazlenka type would be suicide for that round, as much as I would like any of them.
That said, here’s this week’s list of the top ten OUTs and INs.
.
Most Traded OUT
Obviously a season ending injury to a player in two thirds of our teams will be top of this list. As I said, has to go but not necessarily this week depending on your strategy. If your plan was to grab a player(s) you wanted coming off the bye, then it wouldn’t hurt to stick fat and use Sam Flanders next week to get someone off round 13 bye, like Whitfield, Ash, Cally, Ross etc.
Josh LIndsay could be a useful warm body during the few weeks to his bye but is already losing cash and that may be reason enough to sell him this round, especially with that 116 BE. I was planning on him staying, but might look at Hugo to do the same job and bank the cash for a more useful trade. Has scored a huge ton but it looks like McCarthy moving back has cut him out of some of the distributing and kick in duties, hence fewer points lately.
A bit of a downer last week for Patrick Retschko sees Father Dougal’s “return to the norm” theory come to fruition and a bunch of coaches leaping off as a result. Still has some money to make with a friendly BE of 31 and is not playing this week so is not a necessary trade unless you need his blood to make a warm body. With only two teams missing this week, there should be a chance to use him for at least one more week while that 107 is still in his cycle. Even another poor score of about 47 takes him over the magical $300k mark, and if he achieves his average, then he’ll scrape in another $17k.
Another soft tissue injury to Kiddy Coleman should ensure you offload him now, if you hadn’t been thinking about it already. Leaking cash, and not the keeper we thought with a five round average of just 72, his BE even has moved up to 111 where he hasn’t been since round 4.
Tanner Bruhn, the enigma, Could be a better scorer than some rookie but is likely going to lose more money doing so. I always think he looks good in a game, but then finishes with disappointing scores. Has only reached his BE of 95 once since round one so probably a good time to take the money and run.
Forward role changes for midfielders is normally not beneficial for scoring spikes and while the Pies have their forward woes, we won’t know when or if Angus Anderson will be back in the guts. Typically, a BE of 33 and an average of 59 would not trigger a trade, but i’m guessing folks see that role last week as a red flag for his money making. I’m holding this week, even though he is on the bench, as any money he makes me is better than nothing and I cannot foresee him making nothing.
I’m still hoping to keep the POU till his bye without losing too much cash, especially with the forwards being our weakest link. Mattaes Phillipou keeps looking like he’s going crack that scoring spike soon, but efficiency is invariably holding him back. BE of 61 achievable despite an average just 4 points above it and a couple of goals here and there will help the score along. Gets enough of the pill so if he can sort out his disposal efficiency, and not get caught with the ball too often, those score could move above 80, which I’d be happy with till round 16. However, a tough match up against the Swans might be enough to tip coaches in favour of a trade.
Todd Marshall is out of defence and should be out of our sides as well. BE of 72 and average of 62 is not inspiring for a not so key forward, so unless you need him for a warm body with no alternatives this week, turn him into someone good at football.
People still have Lachie Jaques? Apparently 37,000 coaches still do. Why is it so? Three round average of 47, BE of 77 and season average of only 59.8. I can only assume that with all the carnage heaped upon us so far there have not been enough opportunities to offload him. Good time to now.
Will Edwards had a tough campaign against the Tigers in a romp where the pill never entered the Swannies backline, resulting a teen score for the young fellow. BE is 55 so not frightening, but a highest score of 61 isn’t ideal. Lost a few bucks last week and maybe more this week. Only made his owners $88k when we are looking for $150k. If it makes a good move elsewhere then it’s probably worth it to burn another trade, but you could gamble on him reaching his BE and not waste a trade. If he drops another couple of grand, will it really matter to keep that precious trade up your sleeve. On the other hand, if you are into gambling you could make the move early on Hugo Hall-Kahan.
Now that the outs are out, what am I doing. Firstly, I have three (not counting Flanders who will become a Giant next week), that I would love to move on. Brayden Cook, Tanner Bruhn and Todd Marshall. I did entertain the idea of keeping Bruhn and Cook as cover through the byes, but their BEs are suggesting I will not be able to turn them into someone good at footy if I leave it that long. This could change after teams drop but I think all three go and become Hugo, Worrell and LDU taking me through the byes and beyond. I’m only telling you this so you can avoid them like the plague given my disastrous trading record thus far!!! Beware the MOZZ!!

Since I started writing, Isaac Cumming‘s prognosis has been updated to 1-2 weeks as it is not major damage. Could affect Hugo‘s tenure in the team, as could the impending return of Hinge and Ranks who is said to be a chance against the Dogs next week. Don’t think it changes your strategy though, just grab him, it’s not like there are multiple choices. To show strength in numbers, 18% of the top 1% of coaches has bypassed tradition and traded him in early.
Isaac Heeney has moved into number two since I started writing, and I wish I was one of those pumping the numbers up but I think I have to stick fat with the bye plan. Round fifteen will only lose two players (Zerrett and McCarthy) if I do. However, for those of you in the position to manage it, be my guest, grab him. He’s a superstar who has all the tools to go big (though don’t just go chasing last week’s points) and at just over $600k, is great value for 127 average and the potential constant ceiling. Is projected to go 120 against his next two oppo and with that friendly BE of 96 will only be heading north price wise. Comes back fresh off his round 15 bye against what appears to be a temporarily struggling Brisbane who he has a career average of 100 against, always a good sign.
Given Sam Mitchell’s propensity to play the kids for a few games and then try someone else, Hawthorn rookies wouldn’t be my flavour of the week. Given that nearly 11,000 coaches have gone down the Bailey Macdonald route tells us that the cupboard is pretty bare on the rookie front. Still, you gotta do what you gotta do, right, and there’s always a chance he makes you $40k with another score of 50. Let’s hope he stays around long enough to keep that flow going.
Two games back and Matt Rowell has scored 229 points, and the last 131 appears to be all that coaches needed to convince them he was back. A modest average of 94 for the Brownlow medallist wouldn’t normally attract 9,000 trades, but the week after his bye helps enormously. He’s one of a few I had pencilled in for consideration this week for that very reason. $127k price drop puts him squarely into fallen premo category, and BE of 88 should ensure he does not become any cheaper soon. Scored a massive 143 against The Lions last time out and with the Lions being a bit off, nothing says he can’t do it again. A good selection considering he plays right through the byes now.
A defender averaging 102, sixth overall in total points for defenders with a BE of just 78 for only $457k, I’d like to see that. Cue in photo of Callum Wilkie, the definition of true value . If that round 16 bye is comfortably navigable and you don’t have the Saint interceptor, now would be a really good time to get him. Setting such a high standard that oppo are targeting defending him, rather than the other way round.
If you do not have Christian Petracca in your Supercoach team, you probably should, and coming off his bye is the ideal time to make that move. BE and average about the same (120/118) and $539k is really good buying for the top averaging forward and a DPP forward/mid to help navigate the byes, and for the rest of the season as a premo keeper. Has a career average of 100 against the Lions as a Demon player, but has been a level above that since heading to he Gold Coast so should be a shoe in to comfortably beat his projection of 99.
Jason Horne-Francis is only the twelfth averaging forward at 92, so is not a must trade in this week. Coming off the bye and in possession of DPP helps his cause for those with that kind of bye strategy, and a last up 128 gives us an indication of his ceiling. However, three scores 75 and under leading to that score throws a level of frustration at us. BE of 84 should not scare us, and a match up in the West against a resurgent (sort of) Eagles is maybe a reason to consider him given his price tag of just $443k. He did only score 75 against them earlier in the year, but has a career average of 97. Great price, rollercoaster ride and some great highs if you want to be on that ride.
A little surprising that only about 7k coaches have so far traded in Luke Davies-Uniacke coming off a bye. My belief is that if you can score a premo mid averaging 115 for well under $600k, who is going to guide you through the next four bye rounds, and beyond, and has only dropped below 100 twice all year, why wouldn’t you. Price is likely staying where it is due to a BE of 116 and he has scored hundreds in each game against Freo in the last three years, including a monster 155. Following Freo, he has an insane run against teams that leak points (WC, Rich, Ess, Port, Coll) so I find it hard to believe he’s only in 10% of sides. Barring selection aberrations he’s in mine this week.
Max Holmes is already in my side, and Ryley Sanders is not in my considerations due to the round 16 bye. As I have said previously, if you are safe with that bye, Holmes is a must have as the number one defender in Supercoach. Sanders has four consecutive 100s lifting his average to 99 giving him ownership of the fourth highest average of the forwards. He is getting plenty of the pill, tackling hard and running hard, providing options and becoming a lynch pin in the Doggies side, but too many other round 16 stars to worry about putting another one in. Again, bye aside, he’d be a great acquisition right at the present time of his increasingly upward form line.
Once again thanks for reading and taking interest, it’s really appreciated. If anyone would like a poll on any of these trade selection dramas, drop a comment below and I’ll try and sort it before lockout.
Can get either baz or heeney this week
Which is better and who will average more for the rest of the season taking into account their venue they play at, draw etc
Any thoughts on Joyce returning with the injuries to Zorko and Coleman, both 6wks
Yep, he is a chance. They might drop Curtin and swing Gallop forward with Joyce coming into the backline to replace Gallop. He has been good in the 2’s all year.
Love ya work Jimmy, thanks
Great write up Jimmy, Thanks.
hey guys,
who to trade in out of these 2?
Wilkie
or
LDU
Cheers
Fantastic write up Jimmy.
Wish I could go for Wilkie but already have 7 premos out on R16.
You’ve convinced me LDU is a no brainer, but I have to grab Heeney this week due to match ups and LDU may well not go up too much in price with a 116BE. Will get him next week.
hey jimmy you have thrown the cat amongst the pigeons again … all set push the button re set any thoughts on wilmot lions had good 3 weeks ? js looking good
Hi Spike, sorry I can’t cover them all. Apart from the top ten trades in and out, I chuck in a few thoughts around my team (which may not be that important to a lot of folks) for a bit of perspective.
Basically I try and say whether a trade is worth it or not based on some history and some current stats. Because Wilmot was not in the trades list, he didn’t get coverage. However, for your edification BE of 56, ave of 94 which places him 22nd on the averages for defenders. Last three against The Suns 91, 67, 98 and career ave vs Suns of 89. That aside, fabulous recent from and is carrying the Lion’s scoring with a three round ave of 124. If you bring him in now, you have him for two weeks, and if your R15 bye looks good it’s probably a good move and gets you a POD with 1.1% ownership.
Zac Fisher should be the most traded IN player
