Captaincy Candidates – Round 1

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on March 16 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DOCHERTY v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 128, 144, 94 (122 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 138, 121, 93 (117 av.)

A seagull of unconscionable proportions, the Tigers at the G come as one of Doch’s favourite match ups. With his ceiling and scant options this week, Doch VC could be a spectacular way to kick off your season. Solid for 120.

NEALE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 140, 130, 177 (149 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 118, 116, 99 (111 av.)

Would preferably like him to open at the Gabba but has a tremendous record against Port and will relish duo-ing with Dunks for the first time. Pencil him in for 130.

DUNKLEY v Port

  • L3 v Port: 78, 66, 90 (78 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 78, 116, 90 (95 av.)

For those who’ve gone light in the midfield and have limited captaincy options to start, Dunkley now has a pure MID role from which he can go at 120. He and Neale will be well on top of Port’s engine room.

Captaincy Candidates

BONTEMPELLI v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 161, 105, 136 (134 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 136, 105, 136 (126 av.)

Scores best in big games against tough opponents and the stage could not be better set than Saturday night. Bruise free and now absolved of any standing FWD duties, expect a 125 to kick off a capital season for Bont.

SATAN v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 96, 112, 144 (117 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 126, 152, 140 (139 av.)

Goes gangbusters at the G and should open strongly. A customary 130 for Satan. If he or Bont are a little too mainstream for you, Macrae is also viable.

GREEN v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 107, 111 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 105, 97, 102 (101 av.)

Gets named in lieu of Laird, who is set to be tagged according to express word from Kingsley this week – expect Perryman to go him. With Laird tagged and the Crows the best side to VC/C into, Green gets a shout. Loves a hot start, now firmly OB and should devastate a lighter Crows side with his CP work for 125.

Steer Clear

BRAYSHAW v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 132, 189, 112 (144 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 93, 79, 132 (101 av.)

The Saints are the highest frequency users of tags and Brayshaw has taken them to town the last two times they met. If Windhager gets up they’ll use him, otherwise it’ll be Bytel. Set to be contained to a low-ton at a minimum.

Smoky Pick

CRIPPS v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 79, 132, 88 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 121, 117, 84 (107 av.)

Named him a smoky just due to his ownership but the reigning Brownlow medalist vs the leaky Tigers is an excellent prospect. A lock for 130 as the Blues look to finally win a Thursday night season opener.

Verdict

Neale into Green, with immense respect for a flyer on Doch.

    1. Gets used as a utility and Suns a strong midfield, I wouldn’t bother. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be starting Mills @ 642k given how much they chop him out of CBAs.

      MILLS v Suns

      L3 v Suns: 60, 83, 136 (93 av.)
      L3 @ HBS: 136, 113, 119 (123 av.)

  1. Tough call to start the year. Some chat about Oliver having less CBA’s for the season, with Viney out this week I think he will attend a similar amount as last year so I think he is a safe choice.
You would think Bont is pretty safe too with an Dunkley departure but both play the same game so can only choose one.
The impact of Dunkley and Neale on each other is hard to call so there is some risk there.
First round or two I would probably take a 115 or so to get a gauge on who are the best VC and C targets so I think Oliver is the best chance to hit that mark. Which leaves Green as my C option if needed

  2. Thanks Gunboat

Doc into Bont / Dunks for mine.

Pretty confident on Doc going 120+ and just locking that in round one.

    1. Yeah, Witts is a great option this week. Considering him myself. He’ll absolutely pimp out Ladhams.

Playing at home, which is also great.

      L3 v Swans: 132, 109, 110

      L3 @ HBS/MS: 116, 85, 117

  3. What do you reckon about Macrae against the Demons as a smokey captain candidate? No Dunkley should give him a few more points, and the taggers may give more attention to either Bont or Smith

  4. Any love for Jelly? Solid numbers vs crom. Would love to whack it on Neale but can’t even afford him in the team as it stands.
