Captaincy Candidates – Round 11

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 27 2021

Usually adhere pretty strictly to the 3-3-1-1 structure for this article, but the array of options tomorrow night warrant four VC candidates.

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MACRAE v Demons

  • L3 v Demons: 141, 120, 105 (122 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 149, 106, 146 (134 av.)

Was absolutely massive last week with 41 touches and tackles and just seems to carve it up at Marvel. Reliable accumulating ability and deliberative use make him solid for another 125+.

BONTEMPELLI v Demons

  • L3 v Demons: 135, 93, 128 (119 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 159, 155, 133 (149 av.)

In tremendous form this season and firmly a Top 8 MID. Maybe gets some designated attention from Harmes, but even then still solid for a ton and a shot to go 130 if the Dees back in their own engine room.

SATAN v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 100, 75, 125 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 133, 127, 126 (129 av.)

Wow, just wow. A double ton for the Satanic One last week on the back of an insane 27 CPs, 13 clearances and 3 goals. Even against a stacked Dogs midfield, Satan’s form will have him on track for 125.

GAWN v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 117, 139, 131 (129 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 137, 184, 133 (151 av.)

Even with English to return from concussion this week, Gawn will dominate HO contests and sail to 120 with a chance to go large if the game’s tight and he pulls off some late HO to adv. work and defensive intercepts.

Captaincy Candidates

GRUNDY v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 144, 81, 137 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 138, 144, 153 (145 av.)

Pretty much the same deal as his match up against Ladhams last week: coming up against a makeshift ruck at the G, solid for 130.

STEELE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 128, 109, 68 (102 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 99, 116, 91 (102 av.)

Couldn’t play the Roos at a better time with the Saints’ season at a crossroads and Steele’s form poor of late. Roos let the Dons three primary users all get 30+ last week for nearly 400 SC total. Expect the Saints MIDs to do the same, with Steele leading the pack for 130.

MERRETT v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 125, 104, 112 (112 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 104, 104, 112 (107 av.)

Eagles depleted engine room letting off some large MID scores to accumulators. Thinking the Dons take us to the edge. Zerrett to do his thing and rack em’ up, safe for 120 if your Friday night VC doesn’t pan out.

Steer Clear

GUTHRIE v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 116, 87, 90 (98 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 117, 105, 163 (128 av.)

Looks like he’ll still get up even with that AC joint issue, but a firm steer clear. Low-ton at best. Give him an easy load this week and the bye to freshen up then return to VC/C duties.

Smoky Pick

FYFE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 166, 108, 129 (134 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 125, 108, 124 (119 av.)

Could easily be a Top 8 MID right now were it not for his poor use and inaccuracy of late. Decent in Adelaide, got a 134 av. against Port and the Dockers will be eager to test their mettle against a Top 8 side. Safe for 115 but has 140 in him if he kicks straight in a tight one.

Verdict

Own all of the Friday night VC options, but thinking Macrae into Grundy. Might flick the VC onto Big Maxxy if the Dogs still look comparably undersized come teamsheets.

  1. Great work as always GD.
Probably going Gawn into Grundy as usual although tempted to go Grundy into Walsh.

    1. Cheers, Al.

Yeah, VC on Grundy could work to guarantee his 140~ and avoid an potentially awkward 120~ from Dogs Dees.

Walsh a great fail-safe C, here are his stats:

      WALSH v Swans

      L3 v Swans: 161, 112, 103 (125 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 103 (103 av.)

  2. Can’t decide on Bont, Satan or Gawn for the VC tomorrow. At the moment I have the C on Lyons

    1. Exactly the same problem…haven’t got it right once this year !! I’m thinking Gawn goes huge against doggies rucks. C options if Gawn no good are Zerrett/Titch plus others.

  3. Not worried Roos Turner will go straight to Steele GD? Also Fyfe playing with a reported foot injury could limit output.

    1. Hey, Nick.

Yeah, wrote this up before word about Fyfe came out. Obviously comes out of captaincy calculations now.

Turner adept at shutting down smaller frame MIDs this season, but wasn’t used last week on Merrett or Parish. Don’t he can play on Steele anyway.

If you’re worried though, either just VC him or go for someone else. Plenty of good options early in the round.

      Good luck.

    2. I don’t know how accurate the height and weight details are on Footywire but if you go by their stats, Steele has a 15kg and 7cm advantage over Turner. I’m not saying Turner won’t go to Steele but surely Steele’s size would be too much for Turner. Turner to a smaller half fwd type. Butler or Higgins if they stay in the 22 maybe?

    1. If you’re referring to Macrae he plays the same game as your two V/Cs
Are you referring to someone else? (my bad if so)

  4. Bont into Grundy for me.

I could go Macrae,( after trades) I just feel Bont has the higher ceiling if he can score a few snags.

Thanks GunBoat great stuff mate 🙂

    1. That might just be a good idea…!!!!! have to look at it. It also gives a chance to see what oppts do.

  5. Thoughts on a VC on Stewart? Could have a field day against a pies side that struggles to go forward.

    1. Interesting, Billy. Hmm.

Only problem is Henderson and Tuohy have been finding heaps of it lately, taking a lot of kick ins and distributing from Stewart.

Because of the Pies deficiencies going I50, like you mentioned, he’ll comfortably ton this week but not quite sure he has a C worthy ceiling with Henderson and Tuohy stealing his thunder.

Up to you though, here are his stats:

      STEWART v Pies

      L3 v Pies: 95, 123, 68 (95 av.)
      L3 @ MCG: 92, 104, 94 (97 av.)

Own Stewart, so would love to see it pan out. Good luck!

  6. This one’s being dictated by my loophole players.

    Player.

    McCreery.

Means I’m gonna have to set the VC on someone from the Dees/Dogs game. Oliver, Macrae and Gawn my options. Tough to split the midfielders from these sides, whereas Gawn’s a clear step up against the Dogs’ ruck options.

Gawn VC, will wait to see what my opponents are doing before committing to a captain.

    1. Hey, BB.

All the options you mentioned are pretty great. Have a look at teamsheets, check your match ups and just go for whoever you’re feeling.

Literally no bad option. Tonight I’ve got Bont, Macrae, Satan, Gawn and Petracca – have considered them all.

      Good luck.

  7. I’m throwing caution to the wind this round and going with the mental VC/C duo of Parish into Titch.

        1. Np. Parish could be an absolutely deadly option if he pops off. Eagles struggling with CPs and groundball even in wins.

          Good luck.
