Captaincy Candidates – Round 11

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 23 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 130, 65
  • L3 @ OS: 123, 65

Been playing really well rounded contested and clearance football over the last month, marking an evolution in his game and an expansion of scoring economy. A lock for 120, with Freo having moved Young away from direct defensive match ups. Serong equally as viable.

BUTTERS v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 139, 104, 98
  • L3 @ BA: 139, 104

Butters strictly a VC only this week with North having tagged recently. The VC here would just be a bet on Clarkson deciding to ignore him and him popping off on a small deck against the Roos. 140 if that’s the case.

ROWELL v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 78, 92, 65
  • L3 @ MRVL: 108, 51, 94

Pumped up by Abs this week in FP – and rightly so with the Blues letting off some lovely on ball scores. The softness of the match up will be tempered by an expected Blues win in Melbourne but still enough for 120. Miller and Anderson also nice.

Captaincy Candidates

GREEN v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 95, 96, 41
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 95

29, 14 contested and 85% TOG last week. Good numbers, just constrained by 62% DE. Cats a good midfield match as we know, so Green no problems getting to 130.

MERRETT v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 162, 150, 102
  • L3 @ MCG: 127, 127, 133

They tried tagging for a bit but the Tigers remain the quintessential VC/C match up in SC. Back Zerrett to fill up with 140.

GAWN v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 84, 82, 137
  • L3 @ MCG: 111, 111, 162

Had a down few weeks and it’s still been 111, 111 and 109 from Maxxy, courtesy of some monster last quarters. The Eagles went to school on him last week, with BJ taking front position at all times and the whole side putting physical work into him. Not to worry, RoMo is very much a single player mode ruck and Maxxy won’t have any issues getting to 130.

Steer Clear

Swans v Bulldogs

Bont and Heeney will likely go 120 a piece, just hard to pin one down for a huge ceiling with the Swans’ capacity for negative match ups and the Dogs’ renewed clearance strength. I’d resist the urge of a first game VC and just wait for Dockers Pies.

Smoky Pick

RYAN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 102, 102, 88
  • L3 @ OS: 111, 106, 89

The Pies let Hinge (124), Witherden (141) and Newman (148) fill up over the last three weeks just on a sheer volume of entries. Ryan solid for 130 here.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127

Verdict

With Zerrett firmly pencilled in as C, it comes down to my two finds in Ryan and Green for the VC. Great ceilings and positional match ups there. Originally had Green when SC opened but the way Pies have fed opposition defenders has me on the bottle blonde wizard.

    1. I am considering Serong for v/c after big numbers at Optus Stadium in almost every game they’ve played

    2. Yeah. Tacked him onto Daicos. He’s so consistent and top notch I often forget about him.

      Averaging 130, always an option.

    1. I wouldn’t. Darcy might be back, Pies midfield quite sharky and just better options available.

  1. Limited on loophole options this weekend, so going Ryan into Gawn.

Will be upset from the West Coast game and should bounce back, similar to R0/1.

  2. Just be cautious VC/C’n daicos.
Long Longmuir today said they will be looking to tag daicos this weekend… tag Probably only lasts a half and still goes 120+. But just something to keep in mind.
