Captaincy Candidates – Round 12

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 3 2021

REMINDER: Players on their bye can be used as loopholes and lock out before the start of the LAST game of the round. Eg. Ziebell (NTH) will be able to used a loophole right up until the start of the Freo Dogs game on Sunday at 6:40.

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

SATAN v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 177, 103, 146 (141 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 121, 106 (114 av.)

Just been in electric from of late, adding scoreboard impact and a higher K:H ratio to his game. Tremendous record against the Lions, so a lock for 125.

GAWN v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 157, 46, 97 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 163, 185, 153 (167 av.)

Back to running a 2:1 split for CBAs with Jackson and had some issues with his marking recently (see Jamhed’s comment in last week’s Dogs Dees match chat). Despite that, he’s got a ridiculous 167 av. at Giants Stadium and is due for a big one. 120 at a minimum.

STEELE v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 129, 98, 64 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 114, 98, 97 (103 av.)

Went large last week, albeit against North, but with the Saints looking to hit their stride again in hub conditions expect Steele to carry for 120+.

Captaincy Candidates

MERRETT v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 143, 104, 102 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 119, 104, 104 (109 av.)

Found plenty of it last week as expected but of his 37 touches only 4 were contested and he only managed 1 clearance. Expecting the Dreamtime Game however to be hotly contested, so pencil Zerrett in for 125.

WALSH v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 114, 113 (114 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 90, 103 (97 av.)

Eagles already ailing midfield took another hit (fml) with Kelly now joining Shuey on the sidelines for 4-5. We’re also terrible on the road this year, so don’t see how Walsh doesn’t go 30+ and 130 – Cripps probably tons as well!

MACRAE v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 85, 85, 153 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 84, 85, 74 (81 av.)

Doesn’t have a stellar record in Perth or against the Dockers but thinking Serong gets thrown on Bont and Macrae just does his thing for 125, with a shot to go large if the Dogs put em’ on blast.

Steer Clear

LYONS v Demons

  • L3 v Demons: 147, 130, 67 (115 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 114, 50, 102 (89 av.)

Demons confirmed this week that Harmes’ will continue to be deployed as a tagger after spectacularly putting the clamps on Libba and sucking the wind out of the Dogs CP game last week. First thought says he’d tag Zorko but he doesn’t play on a full CBA load, so Lyons may get a look. Sub-ton if tagged, so steer clear.

Smoky Pick

LAIRD v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 185, 77, 129 (130 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 123, 125, 75 (108 av.)

Laird was already set for 120~ at home against a declining Pies side that he’s gone large against before, but the huge loss of the Grundy will give the Crows engine room an even bigger advantage. A 140 on the cards if he kicks moderately straight.

Verdict

Satan into Macrae for me, although Laird might come into my calculations if I want to spice things up.

  1. I’ve only nailed the v/c properly once this year so v on

    T/u Satan
    T/d Maxy

With c on Bont if needed.

    1. I’m leaning Satan and seem to always choose the worst out of Tracca / Gawn / Oliver

      So definitely Gawn

      1. me too Abs & GD, and I have been on a roll with them recently. Satan’s 200+ (still lost by 200 mind you, bookended by sub 900 overall weekly finishes) and Macrae last week, love the idea of Laird but doubt we will need it !

  2. Thanks as always for the brilliant insight (and for the unexpected shout out), must read article every week.

Oliver into Macrae for me. My C picks have been a little bit hit and miss so hopefully I can hit one this week!

    1. Np, Jam. You were bang on, always appreciate your take in match chats.

Yeah, have Satan into Macrae as well. Only way that changes is if I get strong vibes from Laird 5 minutes out lol.

      Catch ya.

  3. Always get the VC but last week i took a risk and went for Grundy which went bad lost all my league. so im going for the smoky pick Laird VC and C Macrae or Bont! Probably will change it last minute to Gawn haha

  4. Great work as always GD.
I got greedy last week with not taking Gawn’s 120 and ended up with Grundy C.
Going Oliver maybe Gawn into Dusty or Laird. Dusty in prime time with a full house could be big but definitely risky

    1. Cheers, Alza.

Martin been a touch flat lately, I personally wouldn’t risk straight C’ing him tbh.

Here are his stats if you decide to roll the dice though:

      MARTIN v Dons

      L3 v Dons: 147, 92, 85 (108 av.)
      L3 @ OS: 103, 130, 133 (122 av.)

      1. Yeah I agree, as much as it could be good he doesn’t have the form to back him in. Cripps is in a similar boat although his last 3 weeks have been a lot better.

  5. The Laird pick is so tempting!

Hopefully won’t need to decide between him, Steele, Merrett and Macrae after Oliver goes large on Friday night.

    1. Thanks, Vessel.

Yeah, Lloyd also interesting. One of the few premos playing at home this week.

      Here are his stats:

      LLOYD v Saints

      L3 v Saints: 126, 113, 106 (115 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 142, 98, 109 (116 av.)

  6. “Yeah we got to look at it, definitely.. Those two in particular have had pretty good runs at it” Eagles Snr coach Adam Simpson on a cooler role for Patrick Cripps or Sam Walsh

  7. “We can’t just let their midfield run riot.. we will be putting time into all of them, but whether he (Marcus Bontempelli) gets the specific job or.. (Jack) Macrae or someone like that who gets a lot of the ball”

    Dockers Snr coach Justin Longmuir

  8. Thanks GD great write up again.

    Zorko into Laird for me.

    Time to shake things up.

Zorko has been in nearly every scoring chain for the lions lately.

He may get some attention from Harmes, but I think they go to Lyons too, and Zorko gets off the chain.
Macrae and Bont both did well when Harmes went to Libba.

If this fails I like your Smokey GD.

Laird has a pretty high floor this year playing Mid.He should feast on the weak Pies midfield this week at home.

    Thanks again GD.

      1. Thanks brother.

I may have to rethink with Neale named.

This may mean more forward time for Zorko.

Laird into Bont or Macrea ?

I just hate cheering on my Captain last game V my own side 😉

          1. Yeah, neutralizing Libba was inspired but Longmuir mentioned both Bont and Macrae when discussing a tag.

I’m gonna go Satan into Laird and avoid Dogs Cs all together just to be safe.

            3

  9. Would love to see Zorko’s figures if possible GB, although with the inclusion of Neale, may not be worth considering…..

    1. Hey, Lisa.

Sorry for the delayed response, here are his stats:

      ZORKO v Demons

      L3 v Demons: 106, 155, 105 (122 av.)
      L3 @ GS: 116, 95, 46 (86 av.)

Think you’re right about Neale adversely impacting him. I’d just find a different VC and just enjoy it if Zorko still goes large.

      Good luck, Lisa.

  10. What do we think about parish? His figures wont be great but hes in crazy form and could score higher than merrett again

    4

    0
    1. Yeah, if you’ve got him absolutely. In tremendous form.

Didn’t get a mention because he’s not widely owned and this is his first year of premo scoring, so don’t have solid data.

But, by all means, whack the C on him np.

      4

  11. As a bit of a Smokey, what’s your thoughts on Tracca GD?

Seems to score better against the more competitive teams as well?

    2

    0
    1. Yeah, bought Tracca in myself in R7 and been waiting for him to go large. If he were to play four clean quarters, he would go 120 every week np but instead tends to run out of the steam in the fourth and is always hampered by 60-70% DE use.

Does go large in competitive ones though, you’re right. 146 v Cats and 133 v Tigers, hmm.

Think I’d just stick with Satan -> Laird though, Abs. If Racca goes large, then sweet – but probably not worthy of the VC until he corrects his DE issues.

If you are getting a strong feeling for him though, here are his stats:

      PETRACCA v Lions

      L3 v Lions: 141, 83, 85 (103 av.)
      L3 @ GS: 160, 104 (132 av.)

      2

      1. All valid points, fading Oliver these last 2 weeks has really cost me.
Think I’m gonna have to agree and go with Satan.

Hopefully we get respectable score from the both of them and have a ripper game on our hands tonight!

  12. I’m doing VC on C.Oliver in the Friday Night Match. I could also go Gawn, but think Oliver has more potential.
Just in case he gets tagged its VC.

C is on R.Laird – so I have time to swap, just in case Oliver gets another 200+ again.
Given the current form, Oliver is tipped for a 162+ result.

    1. Lol.

Lloyd discussed above, will re-post what I said on him:

Yeah, Lloyd also interesting. One of the few premos playing at home this week.

      Here are his stats:

      LLOYD v Saints

      L3 v Saints: 126, 113, 106 (115 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 142, 98, 109 (116 av.)

Mills solid for 115 and could easily go large. Wouldn’t worry about his specific numbers v Saints as this is his first year as an inside MID, but here they are anyway:

      MILLS v Saints

      L3 v Saints: 83, 82, 87 (84 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 117, 100, 101 (106 av.)

Good luck whoever you roll with, JJ. Both solid options.

        1. Oh, actually asking for a mate lol?

Yeah, I had Macrae C penciled in until Longmuir mentioned him and Bont while discussing a tag. That soured me.

          Laird or Zerrett now.

          3

          0
  13. Went Oliver instead of Gawn for VC. Get that one wrong every week!

So I don’t trust my ability to pick a captain either

    TU Merrett
    TD Macrae

What do you good folk think?

    4

    1
    1. Zerrett v Tigers a solid option, discussed in article.

Word of Dockers running a tag, Macrae and Bont’s name thrown around.

      2

  14. I felt extremely flat after vc Satan went sub ton, and really lost looking for a captain and then the words ‘A 140 on the cards if he kicks moderately straight’ came back to me from something I had read;
    Thank You /genius

  15. Ok had Gawny and Satan in my teams as VC, kept Gawny…….

    For the other team Capt;

    TU Macrae
    TD Walsh

Please tell me who you think……and not who you want…..LOL
