Captaincy Candidates – Round 13

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 10 2021

REMINDER: Players on their bye can be used as loopholes and lock out before the start of the LAST game of the round. Eg. Macrae (WBD) will be able to used a loophole right up until the start of the Dees Pies game on Monday at 3:20.

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MITCHELL v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 104, 72, 114 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 88, 104, 114 (102 av.)

Not as flashy an option as the others but the bye will have done him some good and the Swans let their oppositions two primary users get 31 and 38 touches last week. A shot for 120, with Mills an option as well.

BRAYSHAW v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 78, 62, 32 (57 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 120, 121, 112 (118 av.)

Didn’t play on a full CBA load last round (9) against the Dogs, but still managed 120. Will return on ball with Fyfe gone and still playing at home: safe for 120.

STEELE v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 162, 89, 121 (124 av.)
  • L3 @ CS: N/A

Put together a deadly fortnight with game high CPs, tackles and scoreboard involvements each time. Will carry again v Crows, solid for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

KELLY v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 89, 128, 110 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 128, 110 (119 av.)

Pretty attractive option if you’ve got him: fresh off the bye, playing the Roos, shown he can handle BA. An easy 125, with a chance to have one of his annual monster scores.

GAWN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 153, 99, 76 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 113, 116 (115 av.)

If ROB managed 27 HOs and 137 last week, then expect Gawn to do no less than 130. The 2:1 ruck split with Jackson is less than ideal, but he’s got the utility to get involved on both ends of the ground.

SATAN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 137, 114, 96 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 87, 41 (64 av.)

Poor use (68%, 6 clangers) an 3 frees against kept Satan to a sub-ton last week, but wouldn’t worry this time around. Got Maxxy’s service and the Pies let Laird and Keays grab 40 and 33 a piece. Satan to conjure up 130+.

Steer Clear

WHITFIELD v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 97, 81, 72 (83 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 81 (81 av.)

As tempting as Whitfield v Roos seems on paper, the reports of him jogging instead of training this week make him a steer clear this week. Ton at best.

Smoky Pick

MILLER v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 111, 90, 88 (96 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 80, 52, 54 (62 av.)

The #7 averaging MID at 117.9 for the year and now starting to gain in popularity coming off his bye. Questions over Rowell’s return and a Serong tag affecting him, but should be fine (discussed more in Trade Talk) and on track for 125.

Verdict

Would have my money on Steele if I had him, so it looks like new recruit Miller into Gawn for me this week.

  1. With Gawn likely to go 130+ I want to run with a VC who has the highest ceiling. Lloyd, Laird and Taranto have each only hit over 125+ once this season so as tempting as they are, Steele with 3 scores over 140 this season will be my VC.
    Steele into Gawn this week.

  2. Great work GD. Got any numbers or thoughts on a sneaky Touk Miller VC against the Dockers, with no Fyfe running through the middle?

    1. Not much between Gawn and Satan this week, both will carve up it.

Think Jelly goes 140 and spares you the decision though lol.

    1. Ooo. Nice POD, Wighty.

If Boak cops O’Connor and your VC Wines pops off, I’m f*cked lol.

        1. Ha.

Nah, like the Wines pick. Got a good ceiling, just needs some continuity. Port should storm home. Nice one.

    1. LLOYD v Hawks

      L3 v Hawks: 157, 105, 130 (131 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 108, 142, 98 (116 av.)

Actually got some mad stats, but Steele v Crows too good to pass up imo.

Up to you though, Bobi. Good luck.

  3. Hey GD! Just realised I have you in Contribs league this week … what was that C choice you have now pray tell??!!! hahaha …

OH the conflict now … do I try and combat you or Wighty in his league??!!!!

Maybe this is one for “table for two”??!!

I need something to brighten my mood after the HORROR of what QLD served up last night in Origin.

Also – after thought – hope all are well in Melbourne after last nights storms on top of COVID

    1. Thanks, Macca.

Yeah, that was a dirty Origin performance. Yikes.

Looks like Wighty’s gonna zap us both with VC Wines lol. Our match up though is probably gonna come down to
      Brayshaw & Steele v Miller & Petracca.

We’ll see, catch you over the weekend!

  4. Steele looks the Goods v’s the Crows. Clarry went 200 😉

I might go Mills > Hawks into Steele.

I’m getting in Jelly ( > North ) as well, So Steele into Jelly or Max ? is another option.

So what do you think ?

    T/U Mills into Steele

T/D Steele into Jelly. / Max.

  5. With either Gawn or Oliver as captain, going to try for a smoky in Hawkins as VC. Has the potential to go big on occasion.

  6. Got up this morning to find dad on the lounge floor, six empty bottles beside him and burbling something over and over…six words at a time…I finally worked it out….Ollie Ollie Ollie, oi oi oi. Seems to be a bit of symmetry there somewhere !!

  7. VC Steele into Oliver… But, I’m going to take Steele’s score. So Captain Magnifico Zorko will be my captain loophole.

  8. TU – Oliver
    TD – Gawn

I have VC in Steele so sensible thing to do would be to take that, but looking at my opponents scores, I think I need to risk it.
