Captaincy Candidates – Round 14

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 27 2020

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MITCHELL v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 127, 153, 116 (132 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 132, 105, 101 (113 av.)

Looked close to back to his best last week and would have gone huge were it not for a quiet final quarter. Led the Hawks for tackles, contested possessions and meters gained. Solid for 130 in a tight game against the Dons.

NAITANUI v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 118, 100, 146 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 107, 74, 85 (89 av.)

Despite the Tigers signalling an intention to double team him by bringing Nank back in, Nic Nat’s just so dominant right now that he should be able to comfortably put the Tiger’s ruck stocks away and deliver 120.

MACRAE v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 124, 116, 84 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 141, 118, 162 (140 av.)

Macrae’s continued to pump out exceptional scores despite the return of Dunkley and starring performances from Bontempelli and Smith as of late.  Nothing short of 130 when at Metricon.

Captaincy Candidates

KELLY v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 97, 106, 104 (102 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 139, 119, 94 (117 av.)

As predicted, Kelly played his guts out last week as the Giants struggle for finals. Expecting the Giants to blow Freo away in a bid for the Top 8 with Kelly leading the way with 140.

STEELE v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 103, 121, 75 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ TIO: N/A

His stats against the Lions last week speak for the themselves: 17 contested possessions, 10 tackles and a cheeky goal. With the Dees a considerably weaker opponent than the Lions, expect the Man of Steele to safely serve up 135.

GRUNDY v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 141, 154, 113 (136 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 85, 148, 147 (127 av.)

No doubt in very poor form and the Pies look a shadow of their former selves. That said, purely on the twin bases of Carlton’s ruck weakness and the stakes of the game, you can back Grundy in to bite back with a 125 this week.

Steer Clear

MARTIN v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 132, 103, 155 (130 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 111, 184, 100 (132 av.)

Setting aside his great record for this match-up and his propensity to fire up for big games, the Eagles will almost certainly clamp down on him: whether it’s a returning Hutchings to tag him on ball, Sheppard if he floats FWD or Barrass if he’s parked in the goal square. Either way, it’s a sub-ton for Dusty.

Smoky Pick

MERRETT v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 138, 72, 116 (107 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 135, 120, 102 (119 av.)

Even though I’ll always hate him for pulling Nic Nat’s hair and being a little sh*t in general, Zerrett’s team high tackles, possessions and clearances last week cannot be ignored. With the Hawks leaking some large on ball scores lately, I won’t be surprised if he goes 130+.

Verdict

Macrae into Grundy for me this week, yourselves?

        1. Hey, AJ.

Yeah, GWS tend to restrict opposition MID scoring even in losses. Expecting them to thump Freo and just don’t see them giving Fyfe room to pop off.

          Here are his stats anyway:

          FYFE v Giants

          L3 v Giants: 110, 101, 132 (114 av.)
          L3 @ Optus: 86, 121, 130 (112 av.)

  1. What do you mean no C on Neale? He will be my captain as my VC will be a perfect choice and Neale will be my loophole 😉

    1. I’m probably going to go Titch into Grundy. Not feeling confident enough with Duncan since it against Dogs midfield.
Same with Gawn as he is should be coming back from injury, so might be slightly conservative

  2. WC playing away from Perth now
going to be a whole different ball game with WC fantasy scorers maybe
    hoping Hurn is the beneficiary

  3. Mitchell into Macrae for me. Really want to go with NicNat but agree with your points above on Nank coming back to effect his scoring.

Just a note for those considering Kelly. Serong has been doing some tight jobs on opposition midfielders so might be worth being wary there. Am a Kelly owner so hoping he goes to someone else but just something to keep in mind.

  4. Very unsure who to go with this week. No safe option of Macrae to fall back on but I’ve got all 5 of your other suggestions. I’m considering Mitchell for VC but I’ve got no idea who to fall back on if Titch scores horribly. Any advice?

    1. I did as well. I’m going to wait and see where my h2h is at on Sunday and maybe throw the C on Grundy….

  5. I don’t know who to captain this week after the vc on nic nat didn’t work so:
    TU: Captain Jelly
    TD: Captain Macrae
    Reply saying ‘hi’: Captain Cripps
    Thanks

    1. Maybe not Gawn, Nigel. Returning from injury and Ryder and Marshall will wear him down over the course of four quarters. Grundy surely slaps up Pitt, roll with him.
